It is as if Gould were looking for, and found, in Bach values, intentions and effects that Bach did not really demand but that his music ultimately contains. It's kind of a new creation✨

I know this comment was made quite a while ago, but I have to say that it is a brilliant observation about Gould, and Bach. Gould is perceiving layers of internal structure and complexity. Not necessary to simply play the music, but which are there if someone has the motivation to find them.

I never heard of Gould till recently. I saw an interview with an authority who said he wasn't a fan of Gould because he couldn't hear the Bach in his interpretations. So, I listened to Gould's Bach recordings in order to figure out who this man is. The result is that I now prefer Gould's Bach to practically any other interpretation. In fact, if I listen to Bach at all, it's Gould's piano solos. Nobody else's are as interesting to me.

Even that act was a pure act. His entire being was nothing more than a show. It was never ABOUT Bach at all. And if you listen enough, you can start hearing the Narccissim in his performances. Not just the mumbling, but the complete emotional misinterpretation of the melodic lines. I recommend Andres Schiff, Karl Richer, Emil Giseles. Gould wasn't all that bad, but it is foolish to turn music that was meant to be Universal into a cheap side-show. Ungodly.

@@Acoustic-Rabbit-Holei’ve already seen you in several comments, can you try to stop being so judgemental, it is simply a difference in interpretation and style, even if bachs music is supposed to be in the name of god, how you represent something like that is bound to be completely subjective and individual, does gods music need to be played piano or legato in order to not be a “narcissistic insincere show”? its just different interpretation of the same really abstract ideal that for some reason you impose on musicians
