Hey guys, this is Joe. So today, we're looking at Bachmann EZ track. Black or Gray? There's more to it than just color! I'll tell you what I know about it and Chris will fill in with what else is out there. So grab a cup of Joe, and hop on!

In the 2000s I did find different pieces of black Bachmann, including cross track. Maybe it’s the place you’re at.

Just discovered you channel. Very helpful overview of track types, as I plan my 4 x 16 foot HO scale layout. I like the comment where the guy says grey e-z track looks like you've used grey ballast. I'm just not sure it's realistic looking enough for what I'm gonna build (a layout for my Route 66 museum that will celebrate small town America. I think I'd like to go the cork roadbed with ballast design... I think I heard that also makes for a quieter sounding layout. (Is that true?) I want my train to sound realistic, since the steam locomotive itself has a lot of sound features built in. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos soon. Also appreciate your sense of humor... and your very cool retro-record player in the background!

Thanks for commenting! Yes you are correct, the cork road bed doesn't have as much noise as the bachmann. There's more work to cork, but you can do a lot more with it.

@@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 Thanks for letting me know I remembered correctly. I'll go for the cork roadbed... also the more realistic looking steel instead of brass track. Gonna be fun!

I bought a shed load of straight black ez track on ebay just a minute before I watched this video. I want to build a test track consisting of a basic oval. I bought a load of grey curves at a thrift store already. I didn't know the black track was steel, but no matter I'm going to paint it all anyway and just scrape off the rail surface.

I have a mixture of both on my layout. I've honestly never had any trouble with the black. I just keep it clean and run my trains! Good luck with your set up!

My opinion is that Kato is the best starter track because it lasts longer and it has isolated turnouts for more operating opinions

Brass or nickel silver track. Manufacturers should never use steel because it rusts.

The black track is great I’ve used it a lot and it’s only like 3 bucks a peace compared to the silver track it’s almost double at 5 bucks a peace yea 2 dollars ain’t much more but it all adds up. You just have to know how to look after the steel track I’ve had no issues with trains running on them only the dirt you’ll have to clean the track regularly and that can get a little annoying and sometimes the turnouts can be annoying with delaying. But the black steel track is perfectly fine and cheap

I managed to remove the steel rails from the ez track ties/ballast , polish the rails and then use a table top electroplating setup to plate the rails. Then reinstalled the rails to the roadbed. I later on replaced the coated steel rails with brass rails that i electroplated w/nickel from an old set of atlas snap track,lol. It wasn't easy, but it is doable.

@@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 I just remembered something . Whenever i used a combo of EZ track and cork mounted snap track, i used Woodland Scenics foam roadbed strips under the cork. You can also use that cheap colored foam sheets from walmarts or any craft stores ,craft section under the cork roadbed too!.

I have some questions… Just got a Bachmann train set for Christmas and I want to start my very first layout on a sheet of plywood. Will the power supply that came with my set be enough for that? If not, how do you go about putting more power in? I know that it probably has to do with how much track is used but I don’t want to buy all this track and then the train stops halfway through the layout. 😂
@themillrunandwesternmaryland11
@themillrunandwesternmaryland11 7 ай бұрын
Excellent question! If it's HO scale on a 4x8 sheet of plywood, yes the set power-pack will run your layout. That's what I used for a long time. I would recommend that as your layout grows that you upgrade your power pack for better performance. But for now, what your have will work.

Seems so counter-productive to me that the starter sets all come with bad track. Bad running and fiddling around with cleaning track would put me off as a newbie. Just my 2 cents =)

Bachmann was my choice originally because of the vast amount of track I had. Now, I'm a Peco fan, but still run Bachmann on my main line. If my channel continues to grow, I may explore some options so I can communicate with viewers off youtube. We'll see what comes!

My brothers built our first HO railroad in Japan 1953. My dad said we could have anything we wanted, we just only must pay for it. Well... they, later we, gathered coal and brass along rail roads, traded to brass merchant for hand made track and trains. Many model railroads later, I now rely upon Bachmann Grey road bed E Z track. Have a nice day.

This hobby is getting worse the more I look. What I wanted was the McKinley Explorer set plus the flat figure 8. The plan leave off one end of McKinley and half circle of 8 and join. Seems can't do .

Track planning is frustrating. I've had many plans in my head that I just couldn't get worked out on the board and was very discouraged. But now I've redesigned since then and have been happy with my setup... though I may be starting from scratch again soon! Ha!
