Trying to multitask right now. On TSW waiting for a class 31 hauled railtour on the East Coastway while watching. Just found a nice trick to see the railtour with a loco of your choice by choosing the loco, then leaving the train and riding on the train to Eastborne. 18:30 motor swap: you may be able to up-spec the motor to five-pole, by keeping the motor shell and just change the armature for a five. this requires some careful measuring and sourcing. alternatively remove the armature windings, skew the armature plates a few degrees (5/6/7 deg?? ish), then replace the windings. when you rewind you can use different gauge wire and / or more / fewer turns to up the current flow - and thus the power characteristics of the motor. standard slot racing tactic back in the mid sixties.

Speaking of the Patriot Class, there's a Thomas & Friends locomotive that's based on this exact locomotive, but he only appears in the Railway Series and not the Television Series. The engine is called the 'Big City Engine' although I'm not sure if he had an actual name other than 'Big City Engine', I don't think his real name is mentioned anywhere, even on the Wikipedia page. I guess this is what he refers himself as, interesting. If you haven't seen him before, search up 'Big City Engine' on Google and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Given that they are both models of the same locomotive, there might be a way to fettle the bachmann bodywork to accept a Hornby railroad chassis, might be worth checking the retailers (or eBay) for a cheap pre-owned railroad patriot and try fitting the bachmann bodywork to it

Hiya Sam - In my Collection I only have 2 4-6-0 :- British Railways Light Green Welbeck Abbey No. 61619 which came with the Hornby 'Signature Range' - East linc Special and also... British Railways Light Green West Ham United No. 61672 which came with the 'East Coast Express' set ( I have a few other 4-6-0's but they are static models & in this instance - don't really count!!!) Any way what make this interesting is...They both have a wire going from the Loco to the tender - now this is the interesting bit...with the '61619' if I put the Tender on the track only & lift the Loco slight off the track (so the wheels don't touch the track) - the wheels will turn in mid air!!! But if I do the same with the 61672 Loco - does the same happen??? NOPE - the wheels do not turn - the wire is for the Chip only & NO Pick-ups on the Tender wheels :( Also NO Pick-ups on both of the front 'Pony wheels' on the Locos!!!

Couldn't you just solder in a new 5 poll motor in place of the 3 poll one, that should be possible right?

Like so many locos Sam, they seem to be made for static display not regular operations due to the poor mechanisms used. I became very disheartened with after long running sessions, the coupling rods would wear at the pins that fixed them to the wheels. Locos that are now over 40 years old, don't have the problem at all...Ah well that's my moan of the day...Thanks again for your frank and honest review...Bob

I love the Patriot class, and Bachmann do seem to make the best detailed model... but given the very iffy mechanism, I think I'll stick with my Hornby Patriots - I have an old one and a newer one, and they're both solid runners, and good looking on the layout from a distance, even if they show up a bit against the Bachmann when you get close to some of the detailing.
@mattjackson82264 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam. I have got one of the newer ones from Bachmann. Can't remmber how much I paid. Mine is a BR green one. It's got the 21 pin DCC socket in. It does have tender pick ups. The Cab detail is a bit better. But I would say the mechanism is the same as yours. I find it a little under powered. I have the latest Hornby one which is a great model it's much heavier and can pull more. But the newer bachmann one comes with etched name plates in the extra detail

I’m so annoyed at the fact that my brand new N7 has just stopped working. (Story time): I noticed it was making quite the noise when running after I first got it at Xmas but didn’t take any notice in it. I got my layout out the other day and fired her up, I headed to the toilet and come back and she’s making a horrid sound and had completely stopped running I immediately thought it had just got stuck on the junction and gave it a push, it just began to slide along the track, so I took it downstairs with my mini screwdriver kit and committed an operation to try and figure out what was causing it (this was my first time taking apart a loco), I cleared away some dust in the arches and wheels put her back together, thinking this would have been the problem I placed her back on the track and she had just given up on life fully and didn’t run so I’ve now got to wait till my model train shop reopens again to try and get a specialist to take a look...

Another good review, Sam! I think that it wouldn't be that difficult to fit tender pickups and wire them up accordingly. I'm sure that you could retrofit a different motor in to the Bachman Patriot.

Thanks very much mate - yes that's true - it can be done, but the point was that it was unacceptable for them not to be factory fitted! Yes a new motor would make a big difference too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Oh drat! What an absolutely beautiful loco, but that mechanism though. :( I wish I could find one of the newer ones from the retailers, but I can’t seem to find any!

Hey Sam, you fancy a Pennsylvania Railroad duplex? They had T1's, a Q series, an S1, and a few more.

That sounds awesome - I'll look out for one of those! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

If I was a model railway enthusiast, I'd probably go for the Hornby Railroad version because it's a lot cheaper than Bachmann's version and also it has a better mechanism than Bachmann's version. Even though it's not super detailed, it's still suitable for beginners who are into model railways! :D
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I would too - I enjoy my Hornby Railroad ones much more than this - never any trouble! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Great glass case modellers item. Sensible idea to review the Bachmann back catalogue rather than buying new! When you undid it I noticed it had a nylon gear like the loco in the Hornby Anglian Set, which also has no tender pickups. The Bachmann Patriot must be a version of the earlier Mainline model since Kader Industries which owns Bachmann bought out Palitoy which owned Mainline. I think the re-use of old tooling to create a new release of a model at high price is one of the oldest tricks in the book! Thanks for uploading.

Thanks Allen - yes I couldn't justify the recent asking price, for sure! This isn't based on the Mainline though - that one was much more basic! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Gosh, even if they didn't intend to fit bearings, you'd think they could have at least put U shaped cutouts in the chassis. Even old Tri-ang things had circular holes. Looks lovely though. Cheers.

I agree - it's almost like they're deliberately engineered to fail... I think they call it planned obsolescence! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hey Sam, the train that I looked at is kinda like Hiro from the Thomas and Friends tv show (season 20 or 23). I wonder what your gonna do next for a train review, you'll figure something out. Your videos are getting very interesting to me and I hope your next video that you do will be awesome. I hope you get to review Thomas with Annie and Clarabel (Thomas with the moving eyes). If you have that model then I'm not gonna force you to review it, it's your choice and your choice alone. Kind regards, Paul Bowman.
