Today I'm taking you to one of Bangkok's best known street food areas but Chinatown. I'm joined b‪@hungrytoexplore‬ as we head to three of our favourite street food joints in the area.
We headed down to a little alley at the back of Wat Mangkon MRT Station to meet some of the friendliest street food sellers you're going to find in Bangkok.
He met Jae Ning (Man Not Wearing a Shirt) for some of the crispiest pork known to man with some incredible soups to boot.
Directly next door is Jae Kiew, who's been selling some super rare Chinese pies for 40 years, with the family recipe dating back 130 years.
Again, another absolute legend!

About the area:
Bangkok's Chinatown, known as Yaowarat, is one of the oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods in the city. Its history dates back to the late 18th century, shortly after the founding of Bangkok itself.
Early History
Founding: When King Rama I established Bangkok as the capital of Thailand in 1782, Chinese immigrants were already a significant presence in the region. Initially, they lived in an area called Rattanakosin Island. However, when the king decided to build the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew on that land, the Chinese community was relocated to the area now known as Yaowarat.
Development and Growth
19th Century: Chinatown began to flourish as a commercial hub. The Chinese immigrants, primarily from the Guangdong and Fujian provinces, established businesses, shops, and markets. The community played a crucial role in the city's trade and economy.
Yaowarat Road: Constructed in 1891 during the reign of King Rama V, Yaowarat Road became the main artery of Chinatown. It is often referred to as the "Dragon's Road" due to its curving shape.
20th Century to Present
Cultural Significance: Throughout the 20th century, Chinatown retained its cultural and commercial significance. It became famous for its bustling markets, gold shops, traditional Chinese medicine shops, and street food.
Tourism: Today, Chinatown is a major tourist attraction. It is renowned for its vibrant street life, festivals such as Chinese New Year, and a wide array of culinary delights.
Markets: Sampeng Lane and Talat Noi are notable markets where one can find a variety of goods, from textiles to antiques.
Economic Impact
Trade: Chinatown remains a bustling trade center, with numerous shops and businesses dealing in everything from gold to electronics.
Food Scene: It is particularly famous for its street food, attracting both locals and tourists.
Bangkok's Chinatown stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and cultural contributions of the Chinese community in Thailand. Its blend of history, culture, and commerce makes it a unique and dynamic part of the city.

I would've gone for the stomach and intestines, but the two you guys got looked good too. That medicinal taste from the bitter melon could actually be a refresher. The people there were truly open and friendly, and that's what makes it special.

Hi Gary, I'm watching from work here. About bitterness, I don't think Mara is the most bitter veggie. I believe Pak Sadao is the most bitter. Good to see you and Joe together again. 😊

The one with a lot of green is called Jaap Chai. Jaap means 10 in Chinese Chaochew dialect. There’s supposed to be 10 different kinds if vegetables in the soup with one called bitter vegetable. It has a hint of bitterness in the soup. Some modern restaurants tend to make it on the sweet side.

Bitter melon is medicinal from what I was told😉 it provides a lot of nutrients and very beneficial to your body! I guess to counteract the cholesterol from the pork… I would definitely be giving this dish a go! Thanks for sharing this video Gary🙏🏼 Gotta love your collaboration with Joe 😉
