Justin, I'm not a Dr., but have suffered from back soreness and sciatica for more than 10 years, while bodybuilding and weight training. I have seen my share of it through friend and family as well. Outside of real injury, the majority of back issues [including mine] derived from lower back muscles [spinal erectors] which become significantly stronger than one's lower abdominal muscles. The problem with poor posture [sitting or standing] is not the stretching of the back, but the lack of abdominal muscle use. I gave up heavy barbell rowing and concentrating, with a fair amount of intensity, working my lower abs [leg raises on a bench, hanging leg raises, etc.]. Eventually, I started using resistance with various cable machines. Took about 2 weeks and my back pain was gone. I can remember, waking for the first time without back pain and realizing I had forgotten what is was like not to have pain. Just something to consider. Be well.

This sound like solid advice to me. Chiropractic sounds like quackery from a lot of things I've read and physiotherapy seems like a much more valid treatment.

awesome, thanks for the heads-up, was a bit dubious but have just unpacked mine and now sitting on it ...... it's amazing, not only keeps your lower spine in shape which then keeps your shoulders and neck in position it makes you sit several inches taller. I still suck at playing guitar though ................

Just invested in one! I was looking at replacing my chair, as sitting for hours in front of the PC and practicing was doing my butt in!! This is a life saver mate, and cheaper than a new chair, which may or may may not have made any difference anyway! Thanks for the tip. :-)

This thing is awesome! I damaged my back mountain biking and sitting still for more than 5 minutes causes loads of pain in my lower leg (due to the back issue). Since putting this on my office chair I don't get the pain! best of all I can dance on my seat whilst listening to my headphones in work! I've got one for home and just got work to buy me one for work. Honestly can't thank you enough!

Thanks for the tip, Justin. I'm 60 years old and have had back pain for some time now. It only got worse in January 2017 when I started learning guitar with your fabulous instructional videos. Not that the videos caused the pain!!! It was the weight of the guitar!!! LOL!!! Anyway, I just ordered the Sissel SitFit Plus in the 37 cm size. I see that it comes in several sizes, only varying by a few centimeters. But thanks again, Justin! Cheers! Dave

Purchased! Thanks Justin. I don't have lower back problems but I feel the flexibility to move in my seat (just a little) will help my playing. I also sit on the PC too much so this should help with that too. I enjoy running too so improving my core will do no harm (I'm not a gym bunny). I run in shorts all year round but I've just hit 50 and I'm now feeling the cold on my legs big time, so will be getting them wrapped up next year! I feel my leg muscles are tightening up too so I've also just enrolled for some Pilates classes! Oh dear, the slippery slope!

Hey, Grubba. Did you give this Sissel thing a try? I'm considering getting one, but I'd hate to think that this is a shill recommendation from Justin. How did it work for you?
@dbeastus
@dbeastus 7 жыл бұрын
Justin, any position that engages your core / stomach muscles will make a difference. Instead of having your weight on your butt and having your lower back muscles stretching and straining to hold your upper body, find a way to sit so that your hip angle is greater than 90 degrees and some of your weight is supported by your legs and feet on the ground. A high stool, with one leg on the ground will work, a cushion that raises the seat of your sofa and causes you to slide off unless you use a foot to stop will also work...

I learn something from Justin every time........ I've tried pilates for golf but thought guitar sitting slouching was just an occupational hazard. The swivel stools are great for about 20 mins then it's poor to maintain a good upright posture. I'm going to get a Sissel for my guitar stool which doesn't have a back and hope this promotes a good posture for a prolonged period of playing :-)

The numb genitalia region and sciatica is getting worse for me when I sit and play, so I'll let you know if I'm helped by this cushion. I used to play to distract me from the pain of my condition. Here's hoping I can get back to that... Thanks again for the heads up...

Get it checked if you haven't already! Physical therapist, chiropractor, osteo, naprapathy, whatever. I've had a hip/back problem for two years and trying to work it out now, but since my back has gotten used to the position that my uneven hips caused, it's really hard to get it to stay in the correct position.

Hey Justin! I'm commenting to point out that the captions you are putting in the thumbnails recently feel a little bit off to me. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy the content of most, if not all, of the videos on your channel. You are doing a great job keeping the videos clear and consistent. But the one thing that bugs me in the recent videos is the song/artist names in the thumbnails. I understand that it can be a tedious task to try to get those texts visible in a small thumbnail. You'd need a big font size and at the same time need to avoid the words being obscured by the timestamp. And this needs experimentation. I have a few suggestions: - Try capitalising some/all of the texts. CAPS may have a bad reputation when used in the video title/description, but I think they can shine when used properly in pictures. - Pick a typeface that has narrower characters and/or reduce the "tracking" (the space between the characters). Try "Betas Neue" or "Alternate Gothic". - Use different typefaces for the song and the artist names. It can make the thumbnail easier to be understood "intuitively" at a glance - Make the positions of the song/artist names consistent - Make the texts straight or reduce the degree of rotation (you may be doing this to get out of the way of the timestamp, but it feels a bit wonky to me...possibly because of the effect from the combination of the above) I know this may mean asking you as a professional musician to sit for some more time in front of the computer... But if you have the opportunity, the thumbnails could use some more experimentation around ;)
