Sad thing is that guy in the tie at Payless (probably a manager of some sort) made enough money to support his family and house at the time. After the 07 recession the way big business cut salaries and full time positions, changed our economy forever. Now it would be one or 2 managers and a bunch of part timers who would be scolded for going over hrs.

It's cool how there are always teenagers who want to dress Goth, punk, etc., even tho those subcultures originated in the 1970s and '80s. I never went to Hot Topic during my punk teen/ young adult years in the '90s, as there were other stores that "weren't corporate, man". Funny enough, my niece will go to Hot Topic but prefers a non-corporate store nearby that sells everything from clothes, T-shirts, and records.

I was born in the 70s. 80s were OK but the 90s I really loved. Looking back now, I like the good memories I have of the 80s but because I remember the 90s so much more, that's the decade I love the most. Although not a fan of wondering round shops, its still very odd that big shopping malls (centres as we in the UK call them) are slowly dying. I like Commando mainly for the shopping mall bit as its so 80s America and we all grew up with American shows and culture. Appears the mall is quite different now, just found this "The Original Sherman Oaks Galleria" (assuming links are disabled so just given the title)

@@danielsantana540 For me the early and mid 90s were amazing. The early 90s still felt and looked like the 80s. We dressed the same as the 80s for the most part until it started changing around 94, at least in my area in Florida. In the early 90s we had rock music, grunge just started, we had hip hop, and punk music as well. The mid 90s seemed more rap than hip hop. The mid 90s also were great, especially the malls. Skateboarding was so fun in the 90s, surfing as well. The only reason I didn't like the late 90s was because at that point I was around 20-22 years old and all my friends from high school either moved away, had jobs, and everything seemed different. Once high school ended it was like damn, now I have to be serious and figure out life. I also didn't want the 90s decade to end. We were all scared into thinking that either the world would "end" or there would be massive chaos due to the Y2K scare which meant all the computers of the world wouldn't know how to work once it became January 1st, 2000.

That was part of my peak teen years right there, but people sometimes forget that even back in those days the mall was hella expensive. You figure the min wage was $5.15 per hour and even CDs alone cost about $20 a pop, clothes were way more than that. I usually went to the mall if I got a big paycheck from bagging groceries and friends wanted to go, otherwise I'd stick to used CD places or hand me down clothes. But we were poor enough where one family Mcdonalds trip a year was a treat.
