The radiation in space looks worse than it is, so long as you're careful with your dupes. For some reason, plastic tiles are the best at absorbing radiation, 3 layers are typically sufficient to block enough of it to be safe, 5 tiles to block it completely. There's rad pills that add to radiation dissipation over a cycle and seafood-type foods give some resistance. All of these together are not enough to survive a reactor or compressed liquid radioactive waste tile though.

You don't need bunker tiles on starting DLC asteroid surface because there's no meteors, you might want them for a reactor and for the regolith asteroid, meteors are there instead.
