a rare thing in this is that all three movies are great. They actually didn't intend a second. Just wrote the ending open like that to be a fun ending. But it was so successful they made the others.

They were forced by the studio to make sequels or be replaced and they weren't about to let someone mess with their baby even though the Bobs don't like making sequels. They originally planned one but had so much content they made two at the same time.

As someone who grew up in the1950's and saw this movie when it first came out, I really REALLY appreciated all the nuances of 1955 they captured (and it took seeing the movie to remind me). When the mother says "shush, no one has two tv's," it hit me between the eyes. In the early days of television, it was simply inconceivable, no matter how rich you were, to have more than one tv. (Odd, but true.) Ronald Regan was a B movie actor at the time he won governorship of CA in the '70's. (The 1955 theater marquee is listing a movie he made back then.) It was a real shock when he won the presidency in 1980. The other people Doc. Brown asks about as part of this were well-known actors. Jerry Lewis played a goofy whinny jerk. Jack Benny was best known for being stingy. Classic joke: Robber holds Benny up and demands "your money or your life." Moment of silence. Robber asks "well?" Benny replies "I'm thinking, I'm thinking." In the 1950's, the civil rights movement was in its infancy. (Brown v. Board of Education which desegregated public schools was decided only the year before.) The idea of a Black mayor was still inconceivable in '55. (As was the idea of a Black president was inconceivable in '85, and of course, the writers couldn't predict that it had happened by 2015.) The 1980's were the nadir of downtowns everywhere, with all business and the life of the community shifted to the malls. The 1985 version of Hill Valley had abandoned stores, and marginal business like adult theaters. Mothers used to write the name of their kids on their underwear, always white. In 1950's, the idea of a future atomic war was considered only a matter of when, not if. Also atomic-powered planes and trains. Plutonium is man-made radioactive fuel (and highly poisonous), used for nuclear reactors and bombs. No natural source. Children made scooters by cutting a roller skate in half, attaching the two pieces to a board, with a wooden crate ("soapbox") to hold onto. Skateboards were invented c. 1950's in California as a dry-land version of surfing (so Marty could very well have invented it). The 1936 movie "Reefer Madness" set the public attitude toward marijuana for decades to follow. (Extremely hilarious to watch now as the dangers and effects were so overblown.) In the parking lot scene, the one guy says "we don't want to mess with any reefer ADDICTS." Movies in the 1940's often had the heroes perform top-40's music to natives in some far off island, and the music is instantly popular. In this movie, when Marty goes heavy metal at the end of his performance, the audience is stunned (as is the case when a new genre of music is first heard, from Beethoven to ragtime, jazz, big band, the rock). Johnnie Be Good was just a bit more novel to the teenagers at the time, but not Van Halen. This movie was a refreshing bit of reality here. Yes, gas stations really did have a bunch of uniformed attendants who came out to service your car. Biff is portrayed as a dunce because the well-known saying was "why don't you make like a tree and LEAVE/leaf."

OK, Tara! Gotta tease you! The guy with the ugly sports coat and megaphone who said the band was too darn loud was Huey Lewis. He and his band toured the country for years playing their music too darn loud! Lewis's music was playing in the alarm clock at the beginning, during the skateboarding on the way to school, and actually IN the audition. They just slicked his hair back and disguised him as an old-fogey judge. Sneaky cameo, huh! :)

Hey Christopher!! That is really cool actually!! I totally admit to missing this sneaky theme completely! I do enjoy a good Huey Lewis and the News song for sure, but to be honest I don’t think I’ve ever known what he looks like!! Now I know! That’s such a fun cameo to throw into a movie like this and totally explains why he would say The Pinheads were playing too loud!! I was so confused by that during the movie haha so thank you for clearing that up!!

His band wrote many of the songs for the soundtrack, and "Power of Love" was a hit at the time, which is what MJF was attempting to play at the audition. Huey is in another movie with Gwyneth Paltrow called Duets, about a Karaoke competition - could be fodder for your channel. He also won a court case against Ray Parker Jr over the Ghostbusters theme song, as it had too much in common with "I want a new drug"

One of my favorite bits in this movie, that not everyone notices, is that the mall was called The Twin Pines Mall, until Marty goes back to 1955 and he runs over a little pine tree trying to escape the farmer's gunshots. When he comes back to 1985, now it's called The Lone Pine Mall.

my favorite easter eggs... Twin Pines Mall... "Old man peabody owned all of this, he had this crazy theory about breeding pine trees".... then in 1955 while escaping from the Peabody farm Marty knocks down a pine tree.. Peabody yells "MY PINES!".... when Marty returns to 1985, the mall is now called Lone Pine Mall In the first 1985, the ledge in front of the clock is intact... after Doc breaks it in 1955, when Marty returns to 1985 (the shot with the helicopter and search light) the ledge is still broken... the foreshadowing at the very start of the movie, with a man (old time movie star Harold Lloyd) is hanging from a clock... The tape that Marty uses as "Darth Vader" says Eddie Van Halen... Eddie gave permission for his name to be used, and even came up with the little riff... but the *band* Van Halen did not give permission, hence why Eddie's name is hastily added...

Actually, this was originally a stand-alone movie. They had no plans whatsoever to have a sequel. So, the ending was just written the way is was with no sequel plans WHATSOEVER. But the movie became a hit, so they had to think of a sequel. Also, after this movie came out, the mother of actress Claudia Wells (Jennifer) had developed cancer, so Claudia put her career on hold to care for her. So, the sequel writers had a problem because at the and of THIS movie, Jennifer got in the car with Marty and Doc. So they had to find a look-alike actress to play Jennifer in the next 2 films.
@ricklupo
@ricklupo 2 жыл бұрын
They did change the actress for Jennifer. However, when Michael J Foxx signed up for the trilogy he insisted they film them all at once so he would look the same age in all of them. They then released them every other year.

The writers also realised that putting Jennifer in the car was a bad idea since it made part 2 more complicated than it needed to be.

@@ricklupo the two sequels were filmed in one go, not all three; as the man said, the first one was meant to be just a standalone movie, and the "to be continued" part was not in the original theatre release. Just like the first Star Wars film was just called Star Wars and didnt have "Episode 4: A New Hope" in the original theatre release, but was added later when the movie was a hit and sequels ordered.

As far as recognizing Marty when they get older, when I was at college someone came up to me and started talking to me like they knew me. I had no idea who they were throughout the conversation until near the end, when I realized it was one of my best friends during my high school years. To better experience Parts II and III, you should watch (maybe do a react vid) to the serious western that made Clint Eastwood very famous, "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964). Back in the 80s most of us (as well as Marty in BTTF) knew Eastwood's movies very well going into BTTF. Can't tell you more without spoiling BTTF II and III, which leads to a warning about Part II, I'm sure you've read about. At the end of Part II there are a LOT of spoiler previews for Part III, so to avoid seeing those stop your player at the end of part II when you see the words "To Be Concluded --->" as the spoilers will begin right after. They filmed parts II and III virtually back-to-back so they had all the scenes for the previews, though the two sequels were released about 10 months apart. @ 32:34 Another time change here. Notice the name of the mall changed to "Lone Pine" from "Twin Pines" because Marty ran over one of Peabody's prized pine trees in 1955. A minute earlier when Marty woke up the homeless guy sleeping on the bench, I believe that was the guy running for mayor back in 1955. And the woman in the window that George was peeping at in the tree was Marty's mom as she liked to do that to attract guys! LOL! When you watch BTTF again, and during the family dinner scene early on, look carefully at George's reaction when Lorraine ask him why he was in the street in the first place when her father hit him with the car. George looks like he didn't want to answer that! LOL! I didn't catch that until a re-watch. And all of Doc's clocks going off all at once at the beginning was a little tribute to the original time travel movie of all time, the one that led to more like it, George Pal's "The Time Machine" (1960) based on the famous H.G. Wells novel of the same title published in 1895. It was actress Yvette Mimieux's breakout role, who died at 80, two+ weeks ago. About the flying car at the end, Zemeckis and others have said it was a joke something to amuse the audience as they had NOT planned or thought of a sequel. But BTTF was such a BIG hit they had to made the two sequels and use the flying car thing. Because even in 1985 we knew there would not be flying cars by 2015, let alone 2022. LOL! You'll enjoy the sequels. ✌😎

No, if Marty were to get stuck in the past then to those people in his present like his family, it would be like he disappeared without a trace. He was still born as before because he repaired the timeline but from 1985 on he would be trapped in his past.

As others may have already indicated, when the first movie was made, the screenwriters had absolutely no intention of making any sequels. The final scene of the DeLorean flying off into the future was meant to be a joke. A joke with no resolution. But the fan reaction was intensely strong, and Gale and Zemeckis decided to make the sequels and were kind of forced to write the screenplay so that the details of taking Jennifer into the future that has flying cars all made sense.

Amazing video! Fun fact the movie was almost shot twice. The first time they had to shoot it with a different actor for Marty, Eric Stoltz, as Michael J Fox wasn't available due to him shooting a TV show (Family ties). At about 80% of the movie shooting the director realized Stoltz's acting wasn't in the intended tone of the movie. Most of the scenes without Marty on screen were kept and they reshot only the scenes with Marty on screen. But you can see Stoltz's body in the completed film. IE, when Marty punches Biff in the cafeteria it's Stoltz's fist that you see. Can't wait for the rest of the trilogy!

The irony of Lorraine saying at the beginning that when she was young she never chased or called or parked in a car with a boy and Marty thinking she was born a nun, and she turns out to be a shameless predator. Btw, they weren't trying to set up a sequel, it was just a cool way to end the movie, then it got so big that the sequel was ordered, they didn't want to do it so the studio said it would be done with or without them, and so they filmed parts 2 and 3 together. The plot with their kids was never meant to be a thing, that's why it's so quickly resolved and then they move on to the real story for the next two movies.

This was fun to watch, you are so analytical and figured out a lot. So even if Marty doesn't make it back to the future, he can be stuck in the past, because (for him at least) he already has gone back. HOWEVER, if his parents never meet, then he is never born, so he cannot go back in time, so he can't interfere with them meeting, so he IS born and then can go back in time and interfere...

Guitar Fun Fact #1: Most of the guitar playing you hear in this film is by Eddie Van Halen. He didnt even want to be paid for his participation. He just wanted to be involved. Guitar Fun Fact #2: The guitar you hear in the scene with Marty putting headphones on a sleeping George is Eddie's 'Bumblebee' guitar. Its the yellow and black striped one that many many Van Halen hits were recorded and performed live with. Its a VERY iconic guitar. That guitar is buried with Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott from Pantera. Eddie attended Dimebag's funeral and placed the guitar in a compartment that was special built into the casket. Guitar Fun Fact #3: When Marty's band, The Pinheads, is auditioning for the school dance Marty is playing a black Ibanez Roadstar Guitar. The Roadstar Guitar was re-designed by guitarist Steve Vai in the late 1980s. The new version was called an RG (for Roadstar Guitar). The Ibanez RG is still in production today. Guitar Fun Fact #4: The red hollowbody electric guitar Marty is playing at the school dance in the 50s is a Gibson ES-358. The ES-358 wasnt in production until 1958. BTW... Eddie actually recorded the solo for the going crazy on stage part. Marty is basically just playing air guitar with a very expensive and collectible guitar!

33:12 "Well, I figured, what the hell?" Doc Brown considered the situation _carefully._ He _could've_ avoided getting shot by not dealing with any Libyan terrorists in the _first_ place. But that would've prevented Marty from having this urgent need to go back in time and deliver this _warning_ to him. No, what Doc Brown needed was a way to _look_ like he'd been shot by terrorists, _so_ convincing that it would fool _Marty._

The trilogy is fabulous, you're going to have so much fun. And for what it's worth, I graduated high school a couple of decades ago (saw this movie as a rising senior) and I barely remember what anybody looked like. They had close-up encounters with Marty, yeah, but I've got no problem believing they'd forget exactly what he looked like. He's just lucky that the more- successful George and Lorraine hadn't decided to buy a bigger house!

Actually the end of the film did not intend to set up for a second film. It was intended as a gag, to leave the audience smiling as they left the movie. But when the movie became a huge hit, the studio insisted on a sequel.. and they had to use the 'gag scene" at the end to set up a story. It was not fun for them

@@TaraTunesIn true. But watching with the commentary, they wish it never happened. The studio was going to make a sequel so the writer and director were strong-armed into doing it. They realized that the ending scene here that was just a joke now had to be the foundation for a whole story. Plus two cast members could not return. It was a nightmare. Left to their own devices, if they knew that they were going to make a sequel, they would have had a different ending and planned it

Even though I don’t think there was a second hand on the clock, the clock would be stopped at the exact second that lightening struck it. Since the flyer Marty had said that lightening struck the tower at PRECISELY 10:04, we can assume that some of those town historians obsessed with preserving the clock had checked the mechanisms in the clock that measure seconds and determined that the clock stopped at 10:04:00 exactly :) At least that’s what I assumed!

Even tho they're kind of the same person, we're talking about split seconds. And the fact that George and Lorraine in new timeline just happened to have the exact same kids due to the huge changes in their lives. Again, it's about split seconds.
