In this iconic scene from Back to the Future Part III (1990), Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) comes to the rescue of his friend, Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who finds himself at the mercy of the notorious Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson). With quick thinking and skill, Marty uses a pie plate as an improvised frisbee, disarming Tannen and saving Doc from being shot. Impressed by Marty's bravery, the townsfolk nickname him "Clint Eastwood," a nod to the legendary Western actor.

Tannen, seeking to assert his dominance, challenges Marty to a showdown on Monday morning at 8 am. Initially, Marty declines the invitation, hoping to avoid unnecessary violence. However, Tannen strikes a nerve by questioning Marty's courage, asking if he's "yellow," a derogatory term implying cowardice. This provocation strikes at the heart of Marty's pride, compelling him to accept the challenge and prove his mettle. As tensions rise, the stage is set for an epic confrontation that will test Marty's resolve and ingenuity in the wild, wild West.

"Dude" was also considered an insult then. Very different connotations. Also, with the difference in their size and (alleged) social hierarchy, Buford's perception didn't really seem too different from that of a Harley Davidson guy in a bar today.

I've always admired Seamus' prudence and good judgment. He does not care what others think of him because he knows that he is a good man and a good family man, and he is not going to sacrifice that because someone provokes him as happened to his brother Martin, it is obvious that the crime anecdote of his brother makes a lasting impression on Marty

Yeah, but that trait of Seamus’s must have been strong in the McFly family. So strong, that George got his ass kicked everyday at school until Marty “taught” him how to not “be so chicken” and fight his bullies back. Hmm…

@@FutureGirl2033 Obviously something got lost down the line from Seamus up to George. Seamus wasn't a coward, or at least we don't see him to be one, and it didn't seem to negatively influence his life. It's always a balance in life, one should never react aggressively when others taunt you, but neither should you let yourself be pushed around. It took until Marty McFly for the family to learn that lesson, after he had gone time traveling as he did.

To be fair, Marty ain't all that bright either. When the marshal showed up, all he had to say was, "Marshal, I just witnessed Buford Tannen attempt to murder Emmet Brown! He snuck a gun into this party, even though all weapons are supposed to be confiscated! Everybody here who saw it happen will testify that I'm telling the truth! Buford needs to be arrested for attempted murder, and sneaking a weapon into the town festival!" Clara, Emmett, and all the other partygoers would have told the marshal they all saw it, and Buford would've been arrested. Problem solved.

@@anamericaninbusan9389 It's unknown whether Doc and Marty knew that the marshal at the entrance were holding all weapons or not until people exited. But yes, I'm sure if Doc, Marty, Clara, and everyone else said something, Buford and his henchmen would have been arrested especially they were considered unarmed at that point including Buford since he only had one bullet in his gun which he used up. The only arresting Buford and his henchmen got was for being thieves for robbing the Pine City stage because of one of the henchmen opening his big mouth from 1:08-1:11 (bad luck for them but good luck for everyone else for knowing their plans to get evidence to make an arrest) and/or because there were cameras around and were caught on camera for robbing the Pine City stage.

Marty did that double-take because he is an 80s teen who had most likely seen ZZ Top’s music videos on MTV numerous times, and was caught by surprise that a band from 1885 was doing that instrument spinning like ZZ Top did in the 1980s!

@Frankie2012channel
@Frankie2012channel Ай бұрын
LOL. Asians were commonly referred to as 'the Yellow Man" because of our so called yellowish tint to our skin compared to Northern Europeans (who had a pinkish hue to their fair skin). But in the 20th century it fell out of favor since it was also a common insult to imply "cowardice". No one, even those who didn't like Asians would EVER call them Cowards. Anyone who faced them in battle (Filipinos in the War of 1898 / Japanese in WW2 / Chinese and Koreans in the Korean War / Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians in the Vietnam War) knew that they would hurl themselves into the battle. Cowards don't do Human waves (though it is fanatical, you can't say they're cowards). Now there are other 'armies' who were worthless and ran away in other continents (whom we won't discuss here LOL) but the American experience in the 20th Century made the entire culture STOP using the word Yellow and one of the reasons is that no one ever considered Asians to be Cowards (afraid to fight).

Whenever i see Marty throw the pie plate at Tannen, it makes me wonder how many times Michal J. Fox had to throw it during the making of this film, because chances are he didn't get it right on the first take. In fact i also wonder if anyone ever tested if whether or not a pie plate could ever make someone with a gun actually miss a target in real life, because pie plates are made out of tin and since tin is such a thin and light material it can make a pie plate fly like a frisbee, but it's such a light material that there's no way a tin pie plate could ever possess enough weight or force to actually cause someone with a gun to miss what they're aiming at.
@ashwan3875
@ashwan3875 3 жыл бұрын
its two different takes, MJ Fox is just throwing it at the camera, someone else just threw the plate at close range when it switches to tannen. So Fox probably didn't have to do too many takes, since his not actually trying to hit the gun.

If you had a gun to someone and were just about to pull the trigger when something comes flying at your hand where the gun is held, hitting it. I'm pretty sure anyone would flinch and miss their mark.

Love how Marty thought quick with a pie plate. And yeah his words were insulting back then? Would mean nothing now . And I love the entire series how well casted it was and they couldn’t have picked a better actress to play Miss Clayton kudos to Mary for being a good actress!

The movie is right about how you should think before you speak. However notice how Marty gained respect from everyone when he stood up to Buford. If someone tries to publicly humiliate you, don’t walk away because everyone else will see that you’re a bitch. Only walk away when there’s no gain from the situation.

As a kid Marty looked to me like an adult, the hero of the movie. (Although of course the movie frames his reaction to "yellow" as a vice, realistically.) As an adult, I just want to help him out the way the people here are. Still the hero, but needs to be told what the stakes are since he's not acting on the high school stage anymore.

@@IamPatrickStar I meant that when I was a kid, he looked like an adult. But even as an adult, I'm able to suspend disbelief and make-believe he's a kid because of how he's being played. It helps that I'm now older than Michael J. Fox was when he played Marty.
