Doc (Christopher Lloyd) is with Marty (Michael J. Fox) in the parking lot of a shopping mall to demonstrate his invention: a time machine in the form of a modified DeLorean DMC-12 car. Using a remote control to start the car, Doc sends his dog Einstein one minute ahead of time, under Marty's frightened eye.

What’s the movie Back to the Future about?
Marty Mcfly (Michael J. Fox) is sent thirty years back in time using Emmett "Doc" Brown’s (Christopher Lloyd) time machine. If he wants to return to the present, he has to make his parents fall in love.

If I remember correctly there's a theory of the reason why he aimed that car at themselves. This invention was supposed to be his pinnacle achievement that he's worked on for many years so if it failed he would die and not live with his failure. But I'm not sure why he would need to take Marty and Einstein down with him so the theory doesn't really hold water.
