Do yourself a favour and do not pour the porch or garage floors till spring. Go ahead with the basement floor now or soon. I'am speaking from 50 plus years building residential housing in Southern Ontario, Canada. Similiar weather. That clay is 8 to 9ft deep and it takes a long time to compact in good weather let alone winter. Be patient with those two cement floors. It will not hold up any construction and are not needed till the house is done. Trust me. Love your channel. Cheers 🇨🇦

Really need to let that garage fill settle for a while before concrete. Without compacting it there will be a lot of settling. I'd expect as much as 12" of settling on the edges where it was deep. The concrete won't hold up if poured right on that gravel too soon.

4:15 to be fair, he does say pretty specifically that stone was only to keep things from getting muddy, and additional stone/grading will be done prior to concrete. He may not have explicitly mentioned compacting, but I think it’s safe to say it’s under control.

What`s done is done it will be under roof shortly and besides it takes a long time for nature to settle something like that. I`ve been doing that kind of work for 40 yrs and from my experience it will get by for some time but one day years down the road the garage and porch will settle like you said 12+ inches. Ive replaced many that had settled 30 inches with the slabs miraculously hanging in there but still sagging. We always use pure gravel when backfilling the garage and porch money well spent.

In Canada we Delta Wrap the sealed exterior concrete before back filling. It both provides protection to the sealant from damage and keeps moisture away.

All that fill in the garage should settle alot before pouring the floor. I just seen others had the same concern. I enjoy watching....Thanks for sharing.

It's hard to get good compaction when backfilling with frozen soil. Expect considerable settling. That's not a big deal around the exterior perimeter of your foundation; keep filling as needed. But it will be problematic in the garage and porch area.

Yes, very valid concern for the garage. The porch settling may not be too big of deal. It looked like a 6' deep porch, and if they tie vertical rebar into the front footing, bend it and dowel it into the house foundation then that concrete can bridge over a hollow void assuming it's 6-8" thick. The garage needs some manual compaction, platepacker for the perimeter then jumping jack further away from the foundation so it doesn't crack.
@raytrimmer1860
@raytrimmer1860 Жыл бұрын
The advice I would give besides the compaction deal would be to sprinkle hay on the outside of your back filled Foundation, so when your walls and roofer up and it rains it won't splash mud up on the untreated part of the wall and stain it. It's as simple as sprinkling hay around the perimeter. And if you put it on heavy enough it'll also keep the mud down from going inside when they're installing Windows and siding

Backfilling the garage with native soil is asking for settling and cracks in your garage slab. Either dig it back out or compact it and let it settle for a LONG time. I’ve got a lot of years in construction and have seen this firsthand. Love the Chanel! Don’t mean to critique.

If you can, go with Spray foam insulation. Out performs fiberglass, air tight, lasts for practically a lifetime. Might be pricey but it will pay for it's self in 3 years from heating/ cooling costs.

The house is looking good. Be sure to put an inch or two of Styrofoam under the slab in the house basemen. You can't do it later and you will be sorry if you don't do it. I'm in Maine and have been pounding nails for 47 years. Our energy code requires at least 1" of foam, I believe it is, on the interior or exterior of the foundation. We also have to add 1" of foam on the interior or exterior of the exterior walls as a thermal break. The walls must have an R-21 plus 1 inch of foam. It didn't look as though you compacted the fill in the garage in 12" lifts as you placed the fill. Don't be in a big hurry to pour that slab as it will settle quite a bit over time. You want that settling do be finished before you pour the slab. The most important part of a house is the stuff in the ground that you'll never see. It's not the granite counter tops and gold bathroom fixtures.

In the 1940's my grandparents built a house. Grandpa was a house builder ! He used an I beam in the house! Best thing he did! There wasn't 1 floor in that hole house that squeaked! Still doesn't! The frame is first cut Cedar! it's a beautiful house! It'll last for years to come! Grandma even had them put the windows tword the corners in the bedrooms. So they could move the furniture anywhere they wanted! With out having to worry about the windows! Bay windows in the front! Built in China cabinet! It was the perfect house for kids! Even had the kids bedroom lights wired into the closet in the master bedroom so when it was lights out it. Was lights out! Had a trash shoot from the kitchen to the basement! No kids getting into the trash! Ever! Or grandkids! They found the blue prints in Better homes and garden! And modified it! Have fun with your house!

With those big frozen chunks and rocks you're going to have some settling and shifting for a while, which I am sure you realize. Once a few good warm rains get down into the backfill, you will have to go back over it and smooth it out. And yes, driving machines like that take a physical toll on the body. I rented a skid steer and felt like I was playing football with no pads on. I was sore from head to toe.

When we built our new house here in east central WI, the forms they used basically were foam insulation on the inside and outside and they had hard plastic tendons. Rebar laid on those tendons. They stacked like large Lego blocks. It was really cool. They then coated the outside with waterproofing black tar looking stuff and laid a mess down and around the bottom where the weeping tile went. It has been a very dry & warm basement.

Yes, when he said they did not put insulation alongside the foundation, it just made me shiver. We'd never do it that way here in Minnesota! Maybe OK down there in Penn. And retro-fitting insulation on the inside cuts into your living space, that you paid for trusses over it.

Since I didn't see you use any compaction equipment, I'm assuming you didn't do any compaction of the fill dirt, which means you're going to get some settlement over time. You should be concerned about that if you're going to pour concrete over the fill, such a in the garage area. If the perimeter of the building is going to be a grassy area then there's not too much to worry about.

Why not have the silage bunkers open at both ends? Then you could add new silage at one end, then remove old from the other? Also use closed cell spray foam on the house.. its a little pricy, but you will be rewarded in the long run with a very tight warm house, and lower heating bills for the next 100 years! Good video! 😊

them sticking rebar in it guarantees it will structurally fail in 25-75 years. You probably don't have stainless rebar in there, instead you have pre-rusted (continuing to rust) rebar. next time you build a long term bunker home, make sure to lay stainless steel rebar or other similar non-rusting material
