Today, Helen paints a floral arrangement, where choosing the background is her first step before even lifting a brush. Join Helen as she meticulously decides between a light and dark backdrop, ultimately selecting the light background to enhance her flower arrangement. Gain valuable insights into Helen's decision-making process as she discusses how background choice influences color harmony and overall composition. Whether you're a novice or an experienced painter, Helen's expertise will inspire you to contemplate the subtle effects of background tones on your own artistic creations. Don't miss this chance to witness Helen Van Wyk's masterful brushstrokes and transformative teachings firsthand.

Love this dear lady, so old school, so lovely. Sad that she died so young and pray for those suffering from cancer. This lady was so dignified even near the end when she carried on teaching painting. What a trouper and what a great example of humankind. A life well lived.

She was the best teacher I ever had. Any successes I ever had as an artist is because of what she taught me. Every word was a lesson. I miss her terribly.

Here I am so new to her. So sad she is not still here. Of course she is alive in her soul and hopefully working with those who love her. I will watch all her tutorials.

I'm totally not a floral paintings kind of guy, but I know there's something to learn in every painting, especially when Helen's the one guiding us through her process! She bullseyed the focal point, sketched out the composition, then blasted through the "investment phase" in record time, arriving at a beautifully balanced "casual bouquet" by the end, and walking us through so many concepts along the way. When she switches up the background color while keeping the value basically the same as the beige background, there was a mini "do your own thing" lesson in that, not to be rigidly stuck copying what we see. It's great seeing these lessons again!!

Great analysis. Thanks a lot. And let's not forget that crazy calligraphy drawing at the end. At first, it didn't seem like it was going to work, but a few fast strokes later, the technique paid off.

I learned so much from her many many years ago when I first started out. And now at 72, I can revisit and enjoy her again. My mentor. Even bought some books about her. Oh, and I made soup today. !!❤

@@HelenVanWyk Thanks, I love how she holds the palette and mal stick in that traditional way. By the way, do you know what colours Helen used on her palette? [Edit: I'm actually watching another video of hers (Learning to Paint Apples) and she mentioned Grumbacher Red and then Alizarin Crimson. I wonder if she used Grumbacher a lot as that was a popular brand back then... my mother used that brand of oil paints.]

Sadly, Helen passed away in 1994 after a long battle with cancer. Despite her illness, she continued to produce lessons, selflessly imparting her knowledge for posterity. She was an accomplished artist and teacher, loved by her students and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

What do mean by calligraphy, when not talking about the art of writing?
@HelenVanWyk
@HelenVanWyk Ай бұрын
Helen died in 1994, so a direct answer is not possible. However, in the context of oil painting, she may have been referring to calligraphy-inspired strokes that include fine, intricate lines or patterns that enhance the artwork. These could be delicate lines to depict details, texture, or ornamentation, rather than forming letters or words. The emphasis is on the elegance and precision of the brushwork, not necessarily on creating text. In this lesson, Helen used this technique to add final touches to her painting.
