Just bought my first 5th wheel. I was very nervous abot pulling it but that was easier than I anticipated. Now, the backing..... that was another story... I had the "help" of two other campers in directing me into my campsite, one was helpful, the other.... well, lets say he didn't know as much as he thought. Well. I wanted to thank you for your instructive video. It is the best one on KZfaq because you instruct and demonstrate the relationship between the trucks steering wheel/front tires and how it affects the geometry of the 5th wheel. This past weekend I back into a tight sport with your instructions guiding me and nailed it first time! No one explained the procedure as well as you and you should be very proud in helping so many people.

I've had my 5th wheel for almost a year now and 3,700 miles logged, but can be dicey at times. My problem is 35 years of bumper towing. Totally different reactions while backing up, due to the location of the pivot point. The only time I've had an issue was when pulling past the site and trying to take a sweep make the tight turn, catching a tree with the swinging rear end. That approach is from my bumper towing experience and a unit with less tail-swing. Your point on alignment is great. Taking it slow is also imperative. I've got a 43' triple axle similar to this and usually pulling it alone. Backing in on the passenger side is the toughest, but I've been able to do so without incident on a tight Michigan and Florida State Park campsite, by jumping out to check my position about 10 times, just to be sure all was clear. The only improvement to your video IMHO, would be seeing this in a tight campsite condition, instead of a wide-open area.

I watched this yesterday before picking up our 43 foot fifth wheel today. With barely any towing experience and zero trailer backing experience, I was able to successfully back it up 4 times today. The tip of holding the steering wheel at the bottom and moving your hand where you want the trailer to go absolutely saved everything. Thank you so much for making this.

Perfect! Love how the videographer focused on your tires and how you turned, straightened, turned the other way, straightened... was awesome! We brought home our RV last night for the first time from the dealer, and couldn't get into the driveway, gave up and just left everything hooked up and in the street overnight. When you first start on your setup at about 10 to 15 feet from where your going to stop turn the wheel to the right a little to put a little angle in so when you back you don't have to steer the trailer it will come over all by itself it will save a little room on the left if you need it. The prefect angle for blindsiding is you being able to just see the right side of the trailer thru the truck window if you' re going to be short follow it for 10 to 15 feet and come right back to being able to see the side of the trailer. 25 years of tractor trailer experience.

Thanks for this. Its the first video that made me realize what I was doing wrong. I was never "following the trailer" and getting back underneath it once I got the trailer swinging the way I wanted it. Yours was the first of many videos I watched that made this clear.

Really helpful to have the videographer stand well back to keep a good vantage point on the position of your front wheels. My 2024 Silverado HD has a bunch of camera views but sometimes I wish there was a camera view of the front wheels. When you’re doing a lot of maneuvering and using small movements sometimes you can’t tell if your front wheels are slightly left or slightly right. We used to also have a large boat. It’s funny, I always tell my wife the easiest way to get other guys up out of their chairs is when someone else is either backing in a trailer or docking their boat. It’s like you have to get it right or your “man card” will be revoked! 😂

Great idea is to have a drone flying overhead getting the shots of you lining up/backing up. Thanks for the video. I used to drive school bus. I had one that was 45' long. I never had issues backing (it's not a trailer of course) but it did give me knowledge on how to back a bus perfect the first time. I know it would help to have a reference point which I did when i competed in a school bus rodeo (precision driving competition). I would look out my right or left mirror and see how far back the back line that you would back up to would reference in a mindful angle along your vehicle from that back line to a focal point on the side.. close to the front reference point. The back line I could line up all the way to the front left wheel well. When that back line in my sight lined up to that spot (about 9" up the front of the wheel well on front tire then I would stop knowing I was backed all the way. That could be done in this case also. You would have to know the length of the spot you're backing into ahead of time. If the stall is (typically for a car 16-24 ft) for a long 5th wheel is about 45-50 then you could measure from your truck wheel to the back bumper of the 5th wheel tand further (to the 50' mark) to see a reference point from your side mirror where that would angle down the side of your vehicle. A picture would tell this better with a drawing on what I'm saying... but hopefully you get my point. Cause many times you might not have someone there to tell you when to stop and help ... thanks for the video.

Dude, no one explains this as good as you!!!! I noticed you correct to your tires being straight, then you turn, then straight, then turn. I've been doing a hard turn, correcting with a hard turn in opposite direction and the trailer is all over the place. Thank you.

EVERYONE no matter how experienced should always practice with a new trailer. Find an empty lot or field, get permission and set up some cones. Even if just for 20 minutes to get a feel for the trailers quirks

Haven’t ever camped in a place with that much open space. Would like to see if this works in a real campsite with tight spaces, narrow roads and not enough space to pull straight even with a smaller trailer.

Thanks for the video man. I appreciate that you criticized the people at RV parks for not being able to park but also offered them advice. I’m going on my 4th year traveling full time mostly by myself with my 32ft fifth wheel. I move every 2-3 weeks for 9 months of the year and usually stay in one place for winter. I’ve had some drivers training in the military and considering myself a decent driver (not great). I was mostly watching this video because I’m considering an upgrade to a large toy hauler similar to yours. Plenty of my campground neighbors have large rigs but the length is still intimidating to me.

Oh my gosh! Thank you! This was helpful. I've been towing TT's for several years and finally "mastered" backing up. Then i bought a 5th wheel last week. VERY different to back up. When practicing in a parking lot, I found myself getting that dramatic angle you talked about, but I had no idea how to counter it--I was almost at 90 degrees and had no control at that point over where it was going. It didn't occur to me to do the opposite of what I expected to get back under and gain control. I'll be watching this a couple more times. I would love to see you do a video as though backing into a campsite with trees/obstacles, a tighter angle, and almost no way to pull as far forward as you might like (I seem to have a knack for choosing these sites when I make reservations at state/national parks--lol). Even if you don't, this video will still help. I take it out for it's first camping trip next week, and I already feel better. I also feel a little stupid that I didn't just try to turn my front wheels the opposite way just to see what would happen since nothing else was working. Thank you!!

Excellent video with very easy to understand tips and instructions. Our new Forest River Fifth Wheel (also our first ever RV) is the same length as yours, but it's not a TH so we only have two axels. How much does that change the dynamics of the turns, or are they basically the same? I don't have access to that much real estate to practice in, but hope to get a local church to let us use their parking lot on non function days to practice with before we head out on the road next spring.

Other than brand differences I'm going to have the same or very close to what you've got going on. I'm not sure, however the bed size on yours with the wide lens. Long bed? I've got the Ram 3500hd Cummins 6,7 crew, long, dually. Your explanation is great. Tough I've towed a 5th wheel (Just around 38ft, I believe. Loaner to me) and practiced in empty p-lot, did pretty well for the 1200 ish miles each way it's always good to get someone else's, with experience like you, input. I've gained info from you. The only way to get good at backing up is to do it. Every trailer is different. The longer the trailer the easier it actually is to back it up. A single axle jet ski trailer is probably the hardest trailer to back up just because you can’t really see it and it moves a lot with very small movements. Just practice. Like this gentleman did he had a very open space and he was able to pick a scenario. Set up cones and those will be the campsite and put obstacles in the way using cones. Be it another trailer, trees, other vehicles, buildings etc. you just have to get out there and practice that’s the only way to get better. He had very useful tips. Always get the trailer straight before backing if possible and always make slow movements. Go slow and small movements is key. Have a spotter if possible.

First of all, you are facing the wrong direction. In the trucking world what you are attempting to do in blind side parking. The correct way to back in is always from the left so you can see the area you are backing into. Just a tip from a trucker.

I've got the built in goose neck in my Ram. What's your opinion on the adapter? The 38ft I mentioned had the adapter and used it. I liked it. But now no experience with an actual 5th wheel hitch. Any input or pro/ con opinion? Thanks Ps. Nice property you've got there

Backing up in an open couple of acres doesn’t seem like much of a challenge! t least put out some cones and some obstacles we usually find at campsites.

I have literally backed a trailer up thousands of times. The longest has been 27 feet. Recently we purchased a fifth wheel so I wanted to do a little research about packing up a fifth wheel. It is a little different I can see where I’m going to have to practice that.

Friend showed me that if you turn with bottom of steering where uts easier because the bottom turned to right makes trailer go right, left, to left. Avoids confusion when using mirrors. Helped me a ton.

did it work with a fifth wheel that has higher ground clearance than these z lips? I think at least that's what they're called, so your model is built deeper than some others. is there any possibility to drive on this place or basically not?

I found the video somewhat helpful. If you showed us first the place (area with cones, etc.) where you were going to park, I would have followed the video easier. "Worst case scenario" and he has all the space in the world to move around, try the maneuver where you barely have room (one lane road, a lot of trees, multiple vehicles, kids running around, and people waiting for you to move) Then say worst case scenario.

No, first mistake people make is not "backing on the left!" Drive around the building from the other direction so you can the back of the trailer from the driver's mirror!
