Introducing a young horse to tack and rider for the first time should be a relaxed and rewarding experience for both of you. This compilation of horses and riders shows our process of using positive reinforcement to start / back / break (I hope not!) young horses.
We have more in-depth videos on saddling, mounting and riding young horses for the first time in our Playlist here: • Mounting a Young Horse...
This Playlist includes videos on how to use clicker training to teach your horse about saddling and tacking up, lining up and standing at the mounting block and taking your first ridden steps to a target.
Many thanks to all the wonderful CT Club members and coaches who shared their videos of their gentle, compassionate horse training from all over the world:
Helen Smith and Humphrey
Rebecca Musselwhite and Zulu
Lesley Woodward and Bella
Claire Waldron and Rachel Bedingfield and Leo
Helen Gilbertson and Hannah Weston and Lubie
Melanie Watson and Rags (with Richard Winter and Katherine Batch)
Ellie McMillan and Ragnor (with Allan McMillan)

I love the woman mounting the Gypsy with the other Horses around. Side Comment: (Sometimes we are not careful enough , when we have helmets on . It’s almost a false confidence that we can now just do anything. ) Anyway, her confidence and type of Horse she is mounting on , has made this a great experience for the Horses and Her . Love your cheerfulness and happy way you deliver your messages in the Videos ☺️💜Laura 🇺🇸🐴💜

In the USA we say ‘mounting’ a horse. ‘Backing’ a horse means backing it up here. I was wondering why there was no backing up of any horses going on here😉

We call that ‘backing up’, or ‘rein back’ if you’re talking about it as a dressage movement 🤷‍♀️ ‘backing ‘only really refers to the initial process of ‘teaching a horse to carry someone’; mounting is what’s normally said when you get on a horse. (I like linguistic stuff and seeing how people in different places use different phrases 😉)
