Not only nicely rimed, but also a damn good advice: dont be an internet hipster and bring a hammock, dont be that guy! Go for the good old tent.
@KevinOutdoors
@KevinOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
@@scheisstag Oh, there is no right or wrong way. Guys like Shug are lucky that they just lay back and fall asleep in the same position that they wake up. I can't sleep on my back and toss and turn all night long, and for that reason I will probably never try a hammock.
@scheisstag
@scheisstag 4 жыл бұрын
@@KevinOutdoors Yeah, of course you are right and everybody is free to do whatever pleases him. This of course also includes wasting lots of money on hammock equipment. And if you want to try something new and hip for the time span of a weekend and you have plenty of money to waste, it will serve you well. But if you for example plan on doing a decent trip on a budget: like travelling with a bike from Europe to Thailand through all the high mountains and through all the windy deserts over the time span of some years, which also means through winter, or if you plan on staying one complete year and over winter in the wilderness to do animal research, than there are some good arguments for not choosing a hammock: -A tent offers privacy, which is extra important in countries like India or Bangladesh, where you will be surrounded day and night by up to a hundred watching people. - A tent offers you the opportunity to take the luggage inside, which makes it not only more comfortable to reach your stuff but its also safer for the luggage. I had unknown animals stealing my shoes from under the outer tent (which can be deadly in the wilderness) and I had humans stealing complete food bags from the same spot. Once I had a big group of wild pigs in the middle of the day silently eating the food stored inside the tent while I had a short nap inside the very same tent with open zippers. In one occasion I experienced a very severe snow storm in the mountains with high winds in one night, after going to bed the previous evening in calm weather and with no snow at all. I couldnt recover my plate and pan under one meter of snow the next day. Since than I prefer to take everything into the tent (And to close the zippers ! :-D). Which you cant do in a hammock. -A tent is more stable in really high winds. First because its built closer to the ground and can benefit of the cover of a big rock or snow wall therefore. Second because its closed and is not build like a tarp, which resembles a big wing with both sides streamed by the wind. And third because its stable and cant start swinging more and more like a hammock. -A tent can be pitched everywhere. Deserts, the arctic, high altitudes and cities are off limits for hammocks. -A tent offers some space: which is important if you get bad weather over a longer period of time. You can really start living in a tent, which includes heating it and cooking inside and even using the "toilet" for "number two" (shitting into your pot with a plastic bag inside) and collecting water, in the form of snow, in a tent with two entries: using one entry for collecting snow only and the other one for emptying your pee bottle to the sides and to enter through the middle. While a hammock is only good for laying down and sleeping. The longest I got trapped 24/7 inside a tent was close to a month in Greenland. I would have lost my ability to walk and my sanity, lying motionless in a hammock for a month. -And last but not least: you can have sex in a tent! So in short: -A tent is a travelling HOME, pretty much like a multi room house with a full functioning bedroom, a kitchen, a toilet and a bathroom. -A hammock is only the equivalent of a (single) BED in the open.

I don't camp much in hot weather but a small fan hanging on the hammock ridgeline does the job. Hang in shade and a breeze. Hang near a creek. Only use a sheet to sleep in.

I've noticed that when my backpack is hanging on my head-end I get a better lay in the hammock. I may be hanging my hammock poorly on a consistent basis and the additional weight of my backpack seems to help things out. Maybe if I was doing everything right it would make my hang worse. I'm not sure why, but my backpack with a little weight in it hanging on my head-end definitely helps.

For me its not so much critters running off with my boots.. The porcupines are fine eating the boot laces right under the hammock.. I use a large compactor bag as a pack liner, and I just put my pack, boots, etc inside it, and lean it up against the tree im hanging off of.

If you're wearing boots especially tall ones you can always nest the one in the other, top of one boot into the top of the other boot. It makes a u and would hold your pack up pretty well. A lot of folks aren't lucky enough to live in places where there aren't poisonous spiders ,snakes, and scorpions.

I bag my boots and put them in the bag with me. They tend to be cold as (blank) in the morning. Or, home to unwelcome guests. Depends on the state your boots are camping in. Depending on the evening pre sack beverage quantity they just stay on. The most important question were is the pee spot border marker. The flip flops stay on the footprint under the hammock.

Some common sense and practical ideas, Shug. But, what do you do in sub-zero temps, say -5-10 deg below zero? Your up the next morning and your boots, which you left on the ground or hung on your ridge line are now frozen. How do you then cope with putting your feet into your now frozen boots? Do your warm feet warm them up while you grin and bear it, or do your frozen boots keep you uncomfortable? Do you have some special technique, like foot warmers or other method for combating this? Another good video, Shug.
@shugemery
@shugemery 5 жыл бұрын
I use mukluks in those temps. But when I do have frozen boots I just spread them wide open at night before sleep. In the morn foot gets crammed in and they loosen and warm up. So I grin and bear it. Mukluks don't freeze near as much. Best bet is keep boots dry. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcuhdbxqu7OVkqc.html

Because of all the black widow spiders here in SW Mississippi, I put my boots down in a garbage bag and then twist and tie it closed so the little devils won't get in. Got bit by a black widow a long time ago and it made me very very sick. At 60, I probably wouldn't survive another bite like that. Plus we have a poisonous snake called a pygmy rattler sliding through the piney woods. Little rascals like small, dark places like boots to hide in.
