Two incredible ultralight backpacks, one hiker's thoughts. The Atom Packs Atom+ and Hyperlite Mountain Gear 2400 Windrider are quite similar but very different in a lot of ways.
Allow me to dive right into this review and comparison to show you all the features, specs pros and cons and share my thoughts and explain why I made the switch.
i absolutely loved my HMG 2400, it's seen me on some pretty long distance hikes, taken me all the way around the world and taken a beating.
I discovered Atom Packs eariler this year and got in touch with the founder Tom Gale and they kindly gave me this pack for helping them out with some video content.
Both of these packs are 40 litres, made of waterproof materials, designed for ultralight backpacking and thru-hiking.
BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

Hey. I’m planning to hike the AT in 2024. I purchased the atom + just the other day before seeing your video. I have gone for a black and grey pack but also with the orange logo section. I have added a couple of modifications like a larger pocket on one side. The lead time is 8 weeks so may be a while. But I can’t wait. Thanks for the video.

Great video, I can tell you are excited about the new pack! I have the HMG2400, and they were willing to customize it for a fee at the time I ordered it. I wished I had ordered it with a removable hip belt. I also have a ULA Ohm and prefer that belt for the pockets and inward pull. The shoulder strap and bottom pockets also look like great features. I think your right that anyone looking for a bomb-proof design might not want a bottom stretchy mesh pocket. It does look nice. What do you think about the carrying capacity of the two packs? I tried the HMG after the ULA Ohm, which has a similar hoop for a suspension and a narrower body. I was told the 2-stay HMG was superior carrying a heavier load. I'm not sure I've carried enough to notice, but I do think the HMG does a great job transferring the pack weight to the hips.

Ahh fair play. I preferred at the time to have a smaller pack, making me think more about how much I was carrying forcing me to pack lighter. On the PCT this year, I went with a 50L ULA circuit after 150 miles with my Atom due to longer stretches without resupply because of Covid. I came home shortly after anyway.

Hey, great comparison video. Thanks for sharing. Curious what size you have in both of the packs? From the video it looks like the torso length of your HMG is a couple inches longer than your Atom+. I was also wondering how you felt the internal volume compares considering the Atom+ 40 is "35L" internal, where as the HMG is "40L" internal. From the side-by-side the Atom+ looks taller and skinnier, but also bigger in volume.

@@thetrailhunter4469 thanks for the passive aggressive kiss off. Very classy. I feel I have to explain myself. Each of us who venture into the world of adventure rely on a compass. Maybe that compass largely stays in a crevasse in our pack, but when the time comes and we are unsure or lost, we reach for true north. It never changes, and is always a something we can rely on. A moral compass is often an adage we fling about to vain outrage, but unfortunately a moral compass is more important then ever. Just look at our world today. A country, who threw their moral compass and respect for human rights out centuries ago, just thumbed their noses at the rest of the world and knowingly unleashed a pandemic on all of humanity. Yet we have a rock and roll legend riding on roller skates and drinking Cranberry juice using a social media app called Tic Tic, owned by the Chinese government, and a Trojan horse into every network of all their users. Why, because they paid him to do it, there goes the moral compass. Instead of making it a hard sell for the free world to buy into that app, he gave the thumbs up. It all starts with accepting a product for free, and expressing a glowing review for said product, there goes the moral compass and ultimately the trust of your patrons. What’s next, it’s not Chinas fault that millions are dead, multiple millions of families devastated, economies at the brink? At least Trump is not the leader of the free world. It only cost humanity their moral compass.

I shoot, edit and upload these videos twice a week so you can watch them for free without any ads or promotions. I purchased the HMG with my own money before I had even heard of atom packs. The HMG is not as good as the atom and the HMGs Y strap broke after only 60 miles. I shot and produced a promotional video for Atom Packs completely free because I wanted to help them out. Later, Atom Packs suggested I make a how-it’s-made video and they kindly let me keep the pack. You have your every right to leave my channel and not watch my content for any reason you see fit.

Hi Andro. I used my HMG 2400 Windrider for a month up volcanoes, thru dense forest in Lombok going up to Rinjani. I took it up to Everest Base Camp in -20 it’s been all around the world, in the rain and wind and cold and heat. It really is a sturdy pack. I advise a pack liner if you expect to be in very heavy rain. I can only recommend gear I’ve tested although I’ve heard the Arc Blast is good. But my 2400 is a tough bit of kit and will see you well. It’s made of DCF with a 150denier polyester face so it’s gonna hold up. My new Atom+ has a tougher 210 denier nylon face though. Thing with DCF is you have to look after them to make them last longer. A heavier pack made of ripstop nylon will weigh more but will last for years. But yes, if you’re interested more in UL. The HMG 2400 in black, good pack!

I’ve had an Exped variant that predates the Atom. And I have an Osprey which features many of the Atom’s features. Atom+ betters Exped fabric, semi-structural frame and features. Atom+ does Osprey features better, adds water repellent fabric and is lighter. Atom+ is a best of both lighter and features worlds. Atom+ hipbelt clip-in is superior cinching and may be adequate heft, IDK. It looks like its weakest design element.

I own a HMG 2400 junction , the atom Xpac. shown here, and the Zpacks frameless 36l pack (the lightest ) The HMG is simply not comparable to the atom . The hmg is a hard use , or extreme use even 4 season , deep country backpack. It has a very thick frame compared to the atom, and is just heavy duty in every way for extreme cold or remote conditions, ski touring , deep country kayaking , etc.! The atom pack on the other hand is designed for the Ultralight backpacking world. It’s more comparable to the Zpacks or as I consider , the atom packs is a much improved version of the UL lightweight v2

HMG recently announce they were moving a lot of their manufacturing to Mexico. I support paying top dollar for US made, supporting US jobs. I do not support paying top dollar for goods manufactured in Mexico. Who really benefits, the buyer or the seller. I'm just calling it out. Your US made HMG 2400 Junction may be a exceptional pack. This same pack made in Mexico may be inferior in quality. This was my final decision in purchasing a atom pack over a Hyperlight Mountain Gear Pack.

Is the 40 liter Atom+ so tall or did you made same modifications?

It’s got an extra 2 inches on the top. Also it’s slimmer than the HMG. 👍

I'm intrigued by the cordura backing What was so different from the Previous pack? Is it more conformable? To my mind it would seems like puting sand paper on your back!

Just come across the vid - the pricing is all wrong. Atom+ with all the gear attached here is £291. The Atom with no back support or hip belt is £185. So way more expensive Hyperlite.

I wish ultralight backpack makers would quit using bartacks. On lighter/thinner materials, xbox stitching is far superior. I've made countless ultralight backpacks over the years, and not once has xbox stitching failed. All the extra holes from bartacking will destroy lightweight material.
