In this video I share an important tip for getting the most out of your backpack sprayer. It's something that most people overlook before using a sprayer to apply products to their lawn. In just a few minutes, you'll learn an easy to follow process that will save time and prevent issues with under and over application of lawn care products.
The tip I'm talking about is backpack sprayer calibration. I'll show you the process I use for back pack sprayer calibration helps me get a great result. Although Flowzone and Chapin backpack sprayers are shown, the techniques apply to all brands of battery powered backpack sprayers.
The first part of getting a great result when using a backpack sprayer is figuring out how long it takes your particular sprayer to output 1 gallon of water. Most products you apply to your lawn assume that you’ll be diluting them with 1 gallon of water before applying over 1000 square feet. Calibrating back pack sprayer is an important part of being able to do this.
So by figuring out how long it takes your sprayer to output 1 gallon of water, you’ll know how much time you’ll have to walk 1000 square feet.

I find it harder to calibrate this way; it's hard to change someone's natural walking speed. I calibrate the sprayer to my natural walking pace, and if I need to change the spray volume, I will adjust the spray tips to get to where I need to be. This was an excellent video.

I did the walking test on my 10’ wide driveway. I measured 100’ length and the tried the 00:01:31 test. I just had to walk forward since I was able to reach left and right with the wand and gun. Way too slow on the first attempt. Better on the second try. Almost no pause in the leg movement….. might update this comment later. I think 10’ wide is a good method and comfortable reach. Also, was able to see the pavement “wet out”.
@larryseibold4287
@larryseibold4287 2 жыл бұрын
Great video. Thanks for this. Calibration of sprayer and walking is underrated. I think that it is worth further mention that this technique needs to be applied to every tip and pressure, not one and done. This seems like the best way to apply a calibrated delivery, but there are several similar methods to allow uniform delivery of the required amount of product. This basic technique allies to manual pump sprayers as well as battery sprayers at various pressures, so long as the pressure is kept relatively constant over time, governed mainly by the tip nozzle. I really like the idea of using a phone metronome app with Bluetooth ear buds to dial in a constant pace.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct Larry. If you change the spray tip or change pressures then the calibration changes. It's one of the most important steps for getting a great result that most overlook. Thanks for chiming. Appreciate you watching.

Great stuff. Will be ordering a couple of those measuring pitchers. Was surprised the 115 psi setting didn't quite put out one gallon, per minute. Haven't calibrated my new Typhoon 2.5, yet. Suppose that nozzle selection has much to do with this. Also, it was a real shock to find out how difficult it is to mount 4 gallons of liquid onto my 67-year old back. Could have used a hoist.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 жыл бұрын
It also depends on the nozzle trappn. My particular unit does not flow 1 gallon minute. 4 gallons is pretty heavy. I tend to put it on a table and use a bench to mount it so I'm not hoisting that much weight from the floor. Appreciate you watching!

Ron, I have a 4 gal Chapin hand pump model Backpack sprayer. I’ve installed a pressure gauge to ensure the tank is pressurized while spraying. I find it very challenging to maintain pressure and walking pace while covering the desired area. It’s kind of like the old saying of “walking and chewing gum and trying to whistle” at the same time. LOL! I think a battery operated model would be a better choice.

Great tips , def have to try the measuring now and once I get my battery sprayer upgrade , I have the Sprayers Plus 4 gallon battery sprayer and it never really held a charge properly , I got a new battery and still does not keep the charge they way other people who have it claim. Something about mine is defective. So I am just going to get a FlowZone or a Chapin soon. I know someone else mentioned on a recent vid of yours about you potentially doing a vid comparing your different battery sprayers and how you maintain and keep them in top working order. If that is still on the cards I also would be very interested in that sort of vid with me being in the market to buy a new sprayer soon.
@RonHenry

It does make a difference Alex B. It may seem like an unnecessary step but it'll allow you to spray with more precision. Especially important when it comes to herbicide application. I'm still down to make the Flowzone vs. Chapin comparison. I've used the Flowzone for long enough now that I can point out the pros and cons.

good video, I really like the editing. however, i think people put way to much into these things. Unless you have a crazy spray nozzle, its prob pretty uniform and consistent. Fill the pack up, make sure you have a well charged battery and take your time to walk the yard uniform and even. don't run, or linger around, just walk at normal pace back and forth and keep the nozzle around your knee height to maintain that max coverage. may your yard be green and your weeds be few. have a great day.

I agree with you, most spraying I've done has been professional and it's a square patch here, a narrow strip there, then there was a litre still in the sprayer before I moved to the next property etc etc - It just wouldn't be practical to try to monitor every aspect. As long as I'm putting enough down, without spraying money onto the ground then I'm happy :) Taking nothing away from the video! I understand that this is the 'proper' way to do it (and how I was taught when I had to pass a backpack spraying course for work).

Great video! What psi are you running for applying post emergent vs pre emergent herbicide? Higher psi like 100+ for that flow rate seems really high for either application type, atleast with a fan nozzle, as the droplet size is really misty and blows extremely easily. Currently using the Milwaukee m18 switchtank, for reference. Thoughts?

I think its easier to time yourself spraying 1000 square feet at your regular walking pace (say it took 1 min); then spray water into a measuring container/bucket for that same amount of time (1 minute in this example) to find your volume output per 1000 square feet. Lets assume the volume output came out to be 1gal. Now when reading a product label that has an application rate of 3 ounces per 1000 square feet; it would mean 3 ounces for 1 gal of water for your particular spray equipment.

I've got about 12,000 sq feet, so loading the sprayer up 3 times (4 gallons) is a lot of work. Can you "triple" the mixture and just spray the whole section...just know you have to walk 3X as fast?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle. I have 12k square feet and I do 3 fill ups. The problem with making the concentration 3x stronger is you're highly unlikely to be able to walk fast enough to get 4 gallons over 12k square feet. Even if you could, the chances of you going a bit heavy in one spot and burning the lawn goes up quite a bit vs. simply doing 3 fill ups. I wouldn't attempt to spray 12k square feet with 4 gallons of product mix.

This is why I worry about putting down some of the specialty weed killers like Tenacity (24D) or the others. How much wiggle room do I have between taking out clover, wild carrot, and crabgrass versus wiping out my yard because I got it on too heavy (even if my mixture is correct) ? I am just getting my blue grass going from last fall, have a ton of clover and wild carrot. I want to wipe that out now so I have a cleaner yard to overseed come late August as I do have plenty of bare spots. The same goes for adding liquid iron that requires 'x ' amount for 1000 sq foot. Can I get that on too thick or is there foregiveness on over doing it ?

Hi Ron, LOVE your presentations and appreciate your great work. QUESTION: Why not simply spray to a gallon and time that? Why all the formula? What am I missing? (I'm curious) Thanks! 2 minutes of afterthought later.....Because we're not pacing for a gallon. We're pacing for 1000 sf. (right?)....But shouldn't 1g = 1000sf when doing applications? Am I overthinking it?? [I'm a rookie. Please explain]
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 2 жыл бұрын
Heya Mr. M. You could do spray a gallon and time it. The issue is stopping at exactly 1 gallon when the sprayer is running flat out. Often times you'll put more than 1 gallon of water in or come up a bit short. simply spraying for 15 seconds and doing the math allows you to get it dead nuts perfect. Make sense?
@mr.m4241
@mr.m4241 2 жыл бұрын
@@RonHenry Yes Ron, thanks for replying. I went out Sunday and applied your method anyway, even after my initial response. My Petra HD4000, using a Flowzone fan nozzle that sprays at 9-10" wide timed at 87 seconds. Problem was my pace (too fast), so I have to get that down. Gonna take a lot of practice, which unfortunately looks to come at the price of a lot of backache.....I've got +23K sf. to cover, so I don't know how feasible monthly (or even twice monthly) apps are gonna work at my age and going forward. I'm considering using the 1/2 gallon per 1000 method to cover more area with less tank refills. Or, I will look into a 25g pull-behind sprayer attached to my garden tractor. Any suggestions on a good pull-behind that won't require too much maintainence? On another note: have you experienced, or heard of, issues using Prodiamine 65 WDG in a backpack sprayer? Salesman at Site One warned against using it because it clogs the sprayer - "even after vigorous mixing?" I asked. He said it requires continuous agitation to function thru a sprayer and residue will settle before I could empty the (4G) tank. Doesn't make sense to me given the agitation that comes from walking with the tank on my back. Your thoughts/experience/advice?

I also am aware that where i live has very different types of applications than those more south or north. Living in a transition zone we have to handle both warm season and cold season grasses as well as some "weeds" from both climates. Also im always looking to learn more so if anyone has specific information on either climates i would love to hear about it as it will help me tremendously on my journey in the industry. Hi Jason. You'd just alter the dilution rate. So if the product you're applying can be diluted at .5 gallon per 1000 square feet, then you could effectively double the coverage and the amount of product added to the sprayer. I'd be concerned about being able to cover 1000 square feet with only half a gallon of water/product mix.

Actually most sprayer equipment out puts TWO gallons per minute and that's the calibration flow chart info you read on pesticide labels. If you read further on you'll find mix rates for "spot spray" applications, that's the mix rate you use in backpack sprayers along with the instructions of: "wet leaf blade" that tells you, your eyes are the best tool to use for knowing/seeing the sheen of the product. Secondly, material type you are using you may want to alter your droplet size and use a larger output nozzle to prevent spray drift and particulate "floating" thirdly and most important, the square footage rate is only important if your putting down NPK that's the primary purpose for calibration to prevent nitrogen burning of your lawn. But you wouldn't use a backpack sprayer for that since the melted urea would be too abrasive for the pump to handle. You'd use a 200 gal poly tank with like a hydro d50, Honda motor and spray applicator gun with shower type nozzle.

@@patriotmjb With all due respect, I don't think you know what you're talking about. I (and countless others) blanket spray at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet dilution rate and have done so for years with excellent results. Most lawn care products specify a dilution rate of 1 gallon of water sprayed over 1000 square feet. Off the top of my head, I can only think of a fungicide and a 1 or 2 herbicides that call for 2 gallons of water as a carrier; and that's really only required if you're not planning to water them in after application. Fertilizers, 95% of herbicides, insecticides, growth regulator, and biostimulants all recommend dilution rates starting at 1 gallon over 1000 square feet. It works great. Now if you prefer to spray at 2 gallons per 1000, fine but it would be incorrect to say it's wrong to spray 1 gallon over 1000 square feet. It's literally what I (and countless others) do every 2 weeks when I blanket spray fertilizer, biostimulants and Primo Maxx.. Appreciate you watching the content.
