A 2.5 day, 35 mile, solo, backpacking trip of the Grand Loop in Linville Gorge, NC.
This is the most GORGEous place in North Carolina!
Before venturing out, I highly recommend downloading the Avenza app and maps from www.lgmaps.org

Thank you!...for making this video so I didn't have to lol. I appreciate the production quality and the fact you have no extraneous fluff in the video, but you show terrain, water, interesting features, etc. Hopefully some of these trails will get marked a little better soon. I may try to do a bit myself in a couple weeks.

IB TAT get out there! I love the gorge. Make sure you download the Avenza app and map. The northeast side between the falls and sitting bear gets pretty tricky.

Thanks for this! Im planning my first trip to the Gorge in the next couple months, looking to do the exact same loop. I have never been, so this both gave me some guidance and something to look forward to.

Josh Artrip I hope you enjoy it. It's one of my favorite places. It can get pretty difficult out there though. I'd recommend 4 days especially if it's your first time. You can cut the loop in half by cutting across Spence Rudge and rock hopping over the river. That's the way I hiked the Gorge the first few times. Take a map and a GPS and have fun!

Until this trip I had spent all of my time in the gorge south of Spence Ridge. I was amazed of how beautiful the northern end was. This was a tough hike but well worth it. Get out there and do it!

I've been on most of the trails but as day hikes. Never the long Loop you made. My favorite area is the Chimney's and Shortoff. I subbed and look forward to seeing more hiking videos!

Tall Joe : congratulations on doing the entire 39 mile Grand Loop. Also thanks for the warning about the complexity of the trail network in the nnrtheast section. if a hiker fould a bean can hanging on a limb, that hiker would have no clue to make a sudden turn off a well established trail onto a somewhat hidden trail easy to pass by. Yet that is exactly what happens with the trail in this section. No body succeeds in doing it without GPS altho some have made such a claim. Another problem spot on the Grand Loop is the 'Ledge trail' section around the west side of Hawksbill. You note that it is AWESOME hikin..but much of it is scrambles on rockslab..requires coordination far above the usual hiking skills! VERY rough if humping a backpack.

Did this about a month ago.. those trails on the north end are no joke with regards of getting lost.. I would have been totally lost without GPS.. took me 4 days you were flying to do it in 3

I booked it out of there on day 3. Went from the connector trail between Gulf Contour and Gulf Ridge all the way to Wolfpit. I definitely do not recommend hiking those northeast trails in the dark. I had no idea they were going to be like that when I left the falls just before dark. The leaves on the ground made it harder to find the trail too. I imagine it would be easier in the middle of summer. Happy trails!

Do people find a big difference between a real GPS and their phones with the maps downloaded?

Going to do this loop later this month. Ive attempted to cross at spence ridge and devils hole but thought it was too dangerous in both cases. What is the situation at Brushy ridge? is it easy like the south end?

The GRAND LOOP is not one continuous easy to follow path but rather a series of about 23 pre existing trails linked together. It never dumps the hiker out on a dusty road. Spence Ridge Trail bisects this 39 mile loop and allows a hiker to break it into TWO smaller more managable loops. The southern of these sub-loops has its own name: ITAYG: ( Is That All Ya Got?). The northern loop does not have a name.
@robertunderwood1011
@robertunderwood1011 7 жыл бұрын
The ITAYG can be futher sub divided into two loops...except that a trail that might be used for this has been abandoned and no longer maintained. It is possible for hikers to create another route down Chimney Branch..following the trail to the nearest water at Chimney Gap. As far as I know, this CB trail has not been extended down to the River..but the woods is thin and gentle for those comfortable with a little off-trail bushwhack.

Robert Underwood I've done the lower loop a few times with Spence Ridge. That was actually my first backpacking trip ever! Are you referring to the Cambric branch trail as the other bisection? That is a heart thumper going up. I once came down Pinch in, up Cambric, then south towards wolfpit. Circled back around on the MST. It was a fun but strenuous day hike. The gorge is a beautiful place!

Tall Joe No. You hiked UP the Cambric Branch in your 17.5 mile vid..and I am frankly amazed that you even FOUND the lower end of that horrible trail..much less hiked UP it. !! HOW did you do it? Did you use GPS and had someone else taken a previous track? The (part - existing) trail I referred to is Chimney Branch which parallels the Cambric and begins at the spring west of MST at Chimney Gap.

Robert Underwood there is a great app called Avenza maps. I used that along with a digital map provided by www.lgmaps.org It is the only way I'm able to make these loops! I've been to the Chimney Gap spring but did not know the trail continued on down to the river. I'll have to check that out. My goal is to hike all of the trails in the gorge.

Last I looked, trail from the Chimney Gap only went as far as the spring. I hear various reports..nothing recent..but I know that a hiker can push along the bushes paralleling the Chimney Branch and the woods is pretty open. I think this would be easier than the route you took along the unmaintained Cambric. I hope some hikers will use this route and open it up a bit. Last weeks forest fire ( White Creek) may have burned some bushes..they might have used Chimney Branch as a firebreak. love your channel...contact me on facebook Bob Underwood for some recommendations for off trail hikin.

Im going to Linville Gorge for spring break, is there any way i can do the loop in one day?
@TallJoeHikes
@TallJoeHikes 6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure some people could. Its a 35 mile loop with some really difficult terrain. I wouldn't recommend doing it in 1 day unless you have experience with long distance hiking. You could split the loop in half via the Spence Ridge trail. That would make it roughly 23 miles which would still be a challenge to hike in 1 day. There is a great map that works with your phone. You can find that at www.lgmaps.net

PharmGeek Outdoor Fun I’m not sure whether it’s true or not, just something I had heard. There is typically a lot of water in the gorge via springs or small creeks so it’s not a problem. This hike was during the big drought.

Wait, did I just get that you did that in three days?
@TallJoeHikes
@TallJoeHikes 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I started on Tuesday at noon and finished Thursday around 7pm. The first two days were short /average but on the third day I did somewhere around 20 miles from just past the falls to Wolfpit. The wind had changed direction on the 3rd day and started blowing smoke into the Gorge. I wasn't sure how bad it was going to be and by the time I got to Table Rock I had already decided (no water for the night) that I was going to go all of the way.
