Located in South Cumberland State Park, the Fiery Gizzard Trail is infamous for being on the bucket list of adventures for many in Tennessee and surrounding states. I attempted a full yo-yo thru hike from Grundy to Foster Falls -- and back -- in a 3 day span. I was able to complete this beast, but please know this will challenge most people and it's not an easy-to-moderate friendly hike; it's difficult. There are tons of boulders to navigate without hurting an ankle, unforgiving steep climbs and the length factor. I had a blast backpacking this thing and hope this serves as a great guide for anyone who is going to an attempt a thru hike of the Gizzard.

Fear of bears turning into hysterical laughter at Armadillos. Got to love camping in the woods.

Jamie, this must be the one you were telling me about. It is amazing. And the best part is, Little Cove Campground. That must be pretty new. The last time I did the Giz was a year and a half ago and it was not there then. This is awesome because it takes the place of the one near Raven Point that was lost when the private landowner sold the property several years ago and the new owner would not continue the access easement. So this one is much closer to halfway than Small Wilds. That makes me want to get back out there and spend the night, as opposed to doing it all in one day. You are a beast, Mr. McCracken. Most people will go out from Grundy through the gorge and back to Grundy on the Dog Hole trail, which is all on the Plateau. But you sir, you went both ways through the gorge. You are a beast. By the way, the armadillo story was hilarious. Thanks for the great video. God bless.

Thank you so much for enjoying this video, Preacher! Little Cove campground is fantastic because it's a real backcountry cam experience unlike some of the others that are closer to the trailheads. And yes, it's closer than Small Wilds so it's honestly a perfect middle ground stop. Didn't realize it was so new but makes sense considering the little walk bridges that are at the campground. I am a beast though haha I don't know nothing but hardcore hiking! 😅 Dog Hole is too easy! 😂

Hey Jamie. Nice video, and it looks like a great trail. If you ever want an extra layer of protection for your inflatable sleeping pad, look into getting a Nemo Switchback closed cell foam pad or a Thermorest ZLite pad to go under the Quasar. It not only will protect your inflatable pad against punctures, but it will add 2.0 to the R-value of your sleeping pad. 😉👍🏼

Thank you, BJ! I'm good with what I have for now. I'm an ultralight-er so adding anything else is a pain for me haha!

@@JamieMcCracken I hear you. I’m slowly working my way towards lighter weight/ultralight gear to make backpacking trips easier on myself. My current tent is a Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2. My son has a Nemo Hornet 2P (which I would love to buy a nice used one, even one of the older Hornet Elite 2P). I’m a huge fan of the double-wall tents. If you ever get a chance to take a backpacking trip to Idaho, I *highly* recommend you consider the Sawtooth Wilderness Area. 👍🏼

I just finished my hike two weeks ago and it was beautiful, for about the first 2 miles it was VERY popular but the point was amazing at sunset

Thank you, Peter!! I hope you have a blast out there this weekend. Let me help you with Little Cove campground. First off, don't worry, you won't miss the sign pointing you in the right direction. It can be a tiny bit confusing but look for a sign on your left coming out of the woods since you're going from Foster Falls to Little Cove. Turn left and there's only one path down to the campground. It's about 3/4s of a mile from the sign. Second, highly encourage you to check out my All Trails map. Wish I could share a screenshot photo of Little Cove but if you go to this link tinyurl.com/2s3armmx I have labeled Little Cove -- it's about a 7 mile hike from where you're coming in at. Hope this helps!! You're going to love it bro! 😊
