Dear Jason [Last Name withheld for privacy],
We have received your application for a Special Use Permit for Commercial Filming/Still Photography at Grand Canyon National Park. Based upon the description of the activities provided in your permit application, it does not appear that they would constitute commercial filming under federal law. As a result, you are not required to obtain a special use permit for commercial filming or pay associated fees. You are responsible for securing any necessary permissions or releases if you will be filming other people in the park. In addition, all filmers must comply with regulations that apply in the park, just like other visitors. Thank you for your interest in visiting Grand Canyon National Park. We hope you enjoy your time in the park.

Wonderful to see that the superivisors at Grand Canyon are recongnizing that a special use permit for a simple youtube video is clearly unneccessary. Hopefully all parks will follow suit.

yes the decision was Park Service wide. i think some places like the Narrows in Zion will keep enforcing more strictly because of safety issues but in general this is already done, the permit requirements were revised by the NPS. Many Parks never enforced any of that stuff. Basically it comes down to / dont put a tripod on the trail and you're good. (a little more to it than that but it is basically about not interfering with other people's Park experience.)

You are an awesome son getting your dad in the Grand Canyon to complete his bucket list. You were definitely set on a different course to avoid Bouche trail. Not for the faint of heart. Most hikers underestimate the difficulty hiking in canyon. Your alternative was a perfect trip for you and your dad.

Thanks for sharing your trip. I love your enthusiasm. What a priceless gift you gave your dad! My son and I backpacked GC in 2018. It was on my bucket list too. I will cherish that memory forever. My son was so patient with me LOL. Your dad did way better than I did, and I was only 55.

My son and I hiked down Hermit, across Tonto and up Boucher over 4 days and 3 nights (it's been 10 years now!). Boucher Creek up to Yuma Point was brutal, but we just took our time through that section. We ran into one person coming down Boucher and said it was awful, super hard on the knees, etc. I've read many trip reports saying the same - up Boucher is way better than down! Also Boucher Creek is the last water, so unless you cache some before heading down Hermit you're carrying all you need for the way out, adding to the difficulty with more weight. Awesome hike with your dad, thanks for sharing your adventure!

Loved every moment of this video. As a New Zealander on holiday I have flown over the canyon and gone down it on a raft but this trip was epic! Thanks for your video, it really puts the grandeur of the place in perspective. And Popeye, what a champion hiker you are to keep up with the young one 😀

Great to get out with your dad like that. Cherish family. They’re what really matters. And never been out west either. A New Year’s resolution to next year. 38, about that time one would think. Lol. Wanted to see the Grand Canyon since a kid. Thanks for sharing the trail and “sneak preview”. Hope you fellas had a time to make those moments.

Yea I hate watching him walk lol. I always think he's gonna crack his ankles! Been really liking the hat, my buff sometimes makes me feel too hot. But I still bring it to sleep in as I can pull it over my eyes and it keeps my head warm.

WOW!!! Roxana and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this one thanks so much for taking us with you! Awesome you got to take your Dad. Not surprised you dove in head first and went to the bottom, amazing he made it as well that is a tough hike. You probably would have made it on the Boucher trail but it would have been scary at times. So happy for you getting out west, what a way to do it !! Rodents in the western National Parks are relentless. too many dummies feed them and think it is cute, end result people get bit regularly and they raid your camp like mad as you saw... Again so happy you two made it to the Grand, Great Job recording it for us, tons of spectacular scenes here.

What a great way to spend time with your father! You're right, one needs to drop well below the canyon's rim for the best perspectives of its grandeur. The farthest I've gone down Hermit trail is to Santa Maria Spring. I'd like to hike all of the Tonto trail, and I have the section between Boucher Creek and New Hance left. Last December, just after Christmas, four of us hiked down Hermit Trail to Dripping Springs / Boucher Trail to the Tonto, then took the Tonto trail west to South Bass and out. We were the last people out there last year before things got overwhelmed with snow. The only part of Boucher Trail I remember being bad was a portion that was very steep and eroded out that was tricky to descend. I remember thinking I wouldn't want to climb up Boucher with the steepness and the loose soft ground. I've hiked a lot of miles in GCNP off the main corridor trails, so my perspective may be a bit tempered than someone who hasn't. Thanks for sharing your and your father's adventure!

Id assume you'd have to get a little wet at the beginning of the season. But everything we went through was just stepping over the small stream. Maybe a few rock hops.
