Thanks for another amazing episode, Indy and crew. My grandfather was there a hundred years ago, trying to stop the German advance. He always told me he'd made it through the war unscathed. Recently I managed to get a look at his military service record. On Mar 29, 1918, my grandfather, a Lt in the 38th Battalion, AIF, was shot in the chest and right shoulder near Dernancourt. Amazingly, despite being listed as severely wounded, survived, and returned to Australia to become a headmaster of a secondary school. for those who are interested, all the war diaries of each unit in the AIF can be read online. You can see handwritten messages from each day of the Kaiserschlacht, along with all the fine details of how battalions were organized.

I've been a subscriber for some time now and have thouroughly enjoyed your episodes so far, but this episode in paticular for me has really been something else. The way you've been able to rachet up the dramatic tension of the war and the trepidation that all sides must've been feeling during this monumental time has really impressed me. Especially the desperate measures taken by the allies and the lack of practical logistical options that were available to the Germans. Although I already know what happens, you've been able to make me feel real anticipation for your digest of next weeks events. Excellent job Indi and Team!

@@jacopofolin6400 No, they lost their momentum and the war was over for them. Also, the french mutinies are often brought up by people that don't know much about them; the germans did try to take advantage of it, yet the french defended as usual and pushed them back each time; they mutinied against poor leadership, not to stop the war. Which is why they happened after the failed Nivelle offensive, that he promised would stopped if it bogged down (he didn't)

A single point of attack provides a single point of defence. With a split between the British and French (although those terms don't make clear the large number of nations involved), then poor communications potentially offered several weak spots to exploit. The error was in assuming German transport and logistics was better than it was, which led to the attacks petering out. You could draw parallels with The Battle of the Bulge.
@wbertie2604
@wbertie2604 6 жыл бұрын
It's a reason pincer works. Reasonable concentration of force, either element is dangerous to the enemy, but you can potentially swap reserves between the two and convert to a single thrust, transport permitting. A single thrust can lead to the danger of an exposed salient and a counter pincer, though, another reason for a relatively broad front in Michael, as a wide salient can be potentially evacuated.

One thing not been mention the German army was now being hit harder and harder by food shortages (the storm troops had the best food but even then they where being affected and when they come across Allied food dumps etc they slowed down to stop to eat and take food - even when ordered to stop and carry the fighting, discipline had started to crack - also back home in Germany issues started to happen with workers on stike etc (due to poor or no food available, inflation and pay) and even ammunition and other miltory stuffs where being effected by shortages and shody workmanship (stikes, no workers, no skilled workers or surplies) - "hence stabbed in the back Theory" - and this had a knock-on effect on the solders where affected more and more to the Spanish flu - by this time new recurtes where having issues with being ill and effects of being malnutrition. Also due to all this fighting leave was none existent and German troops were just left in the front line and not rotated out of the line. These effects would come to haunt the Germans more and more as the war went on.

as always totally engrossing.. My grandfather served in the war (he was canadian) his stories and your narratives make it so real to me . I served in that marines from 1969 -1972 so I understand the fear and the grueling sacrifice of war.. But as I follow your stories I think of my grandfather whom I loved very much. He was the only man I looked up to in my youth.. It is like he was here again and those long summer days we would sit and talk of a soldiers life were just yesterday.... He passed on in 75.. He was the toughest man I have ever known... even now at 65 myself I'm still try to be as tough and fair as he was .. Some say I am such a man but even so I could not carry a candle to these men of old.. these men of great renown.. who endured all so that we could be then free from tyranny.. But as I prepare to lever this old world world I have to wonder why did we fight against the things we are becoming.. Well that is the problem for the younger generation to worry about... and I feel sad they have to think about it at all.

The shells for the Paris Gun were fired with such force that the rifling of the gun actually grew wider with each shot- you had to size the shells to fit the expanding width of the barrel, and once you'd hit 60 of them the gun became too fragile to shoot. They would install a new barrel and then start the whole process again.

For those interested in the Paris Gun(s) I can recommend 'The Paris Gun' by Henry W.Miller. Gives great detail about what guns were where, at what dates how they were mounted, and how many shells were fired from each location/gun.

First of all in shape of Ludendorff we see the weakness of entire German military establishment first time. Brilliant tacticians , great efficient operational effectiveness but their generals are trying to gobble up and swallow too much , more than they can chew and once initial sucess is over (Kaiser^s "Battle has been won" decleration was WAY premeture and later would bite his a.. politically) they lose sight of strategic objective of operation. It is like burning engine of the a racing car with overheating and too much speed. After breaking through where to Paris , Noyon , Amiens ? ALL THREE ? One of these objectives might have been captured (a big if) but all three of them was beyond any armies reach. Entante had a very solid and effective road and railroad network to funnel their reinforcements to seal the gap (Foch's appointment as Supreme Commander in West also made their deployments faster. That step should have been taken long time ago by Supreme War Council in Paris) while Germans were on foot and their supplies and heavy guns (major striking arm) was left behind on muddy Somme tracks. So they were reduced a massive infantry force that was eventually tired , devoid of food and ammunition and could be repulsed by firepower.

Amazing to imagine what must have been going through the soldiers minds on either side of that battle. I highly recommend a book 'No Mans Land: 1918, the last year of the Great War' by John Toland. Its got allot of detail of this battle, and many others, plus political machinations from 1918. Allot of quotes from soliders and details of the micro and macro perspectives. Its really very good.

I just saw the movie JOURNEY'S END yesterday. The movie's plot revolves around a group of British officers at the time of this German offensive. Watching JOURNEY'S END one hundred years to the day (approximately) I found moving. The picture is well-made, but of course sad. I recommend JOURNEY'S END to all viewers of THE GREAT WAR.

Can you do a special on the big artillery gun that the Germans use to bomb Paris. I feel like you didn't talk much about this but it was a shocking event for the French since the war technology was getting closer to civilian casualties far away from battlefields just like the zeppelin did to the British. Both events was a small dose of what would come in the next war.

My mother, an English teacher at Fox Chapel high school (in addition to many other personal goals achieved through a long and eventful life) used to say "Kismet" (an Arabic word meaning "fate" or "the will of the gods") when something terrible happened. Thanks to the team at "The Great War" I now know from whence and where the word entered her lexicon.
