After all the skate parks of the 1970's closed down and before street skating took over, there was the backyard ramp. In this episode, Grosso sits down with Lance Mountain to reminisce about the "golden age of the backyard ramp. MUSIC: "From the Start" by Jesse Dee,"I Saw You There" by Dirty Fences, "Let Me In" by Hunx, and "Salt Lake City" by Dwarves

I never realized skate ramps were so rare in SoCal in the 80’s & 90’s. I grew up in Compton and we found a Quarter pipe in the Penny saver and chopped it up into a mini ramp! Paramount skates was our shop!

Oh man... mid-'80s, middle of the night, stealing 2x4s so long that one dude would be across the street before you even got off the sidewalk on your side and trying to keep them balanced on a shopping cart for a couple miles to get them in your freind's backyard. Building whatever half-pipe you could cram into their yard, only half having a clue what you're doing. So many good times, so many memories. That one kid... getting his head stuck between the ramp and the wall, ass full of cactus barbs

Whittier had some awesome half pipes. 1st 1 I saw/skated was up in Friendly Hills, had a stupid-steep roll-on/channel. Scofield's, aka "The Pain Ramp" (Bellmar named it) was AWESOME. proper toilet available, turntable/stereo cassette player, doughboy pool, & Geoff's sisters playhouse to change in. AVS Market (BEST DELI SANDWICHES) right across the street. Respect to Doc & The Fam. Hidden Valley Ramp (Mar Vista & Colima Rd) was decent, but the/our Skate Cafe' team ramp in Bubba's backyard was the best. Rob-O built. Great ramp.

Early 80s. Not happy with tame local parks we chipped in,borrowed wood from construction sites and built a monster 1/2 pipe Rampage.Iirc 3 ft vert and 8 ft trans.Took balls of steel to drop in. Got closed to local noise complaints and moved to a cul de sac where a truck destroyed it one night.

Beth Burcham I knew Jimmy very well, he actually was the "foreman" of building the Statutory. And yeah, he introduced me to Blaize, we used to go down and spend the night at his house in Chas when Blaize and I were both 16, Jimmy was the mouth, for sure! I remember Blaize would freak Jimmy out by pulling a whip out at night and start snapping it next to our sleeping bags, it was hilarious.

What Lance says at 5:35 is exactly what's going to happen to skateboarding again because of the 2020 Olympics.. I love all the riders but I think it's a terrible idea for us to say skateboarding is a sport and should be in the Olympics. Fuck that. I am 30yrs old and I started skating at around age 10 because of the simple fact that I couldn't stand organized/team sports like soccer or baseball or basketball. I could get on my board and have fun myself and do it how I want. SKATEBOARDING IS AN ART, AN EXPRESSION, A LIFESTYLE. IT IS INDIVIDUALITY. NOT A SPORT. RIP GROSSO

Get a time machine. Talkin like it's so harrrdddd skating a dumb ramp in ur backyard. Whatever. Try gettin kicked outta 15 spots in one day. Whatever. I had a ramp, i also had 2 boxs, 3 kickers and 3 rails and a buncha 2X4's to ollie. That ramp collected dust. Borrringgggg. Jump on a rail or down some stairs. Like Forest Edwards says, I'll start skating tranny when i'm 70. Grandma skaters.
