My axolotl is floating I quarantined her in a 2.5 gallon bucket with daily water changes she eventually pooped and stopped floating and her fungus cleared up. I took out everything in her tank and did a deep clean before putting her back in. Now she's showing all symptoms again.

Do they have sand/substrate? If sand is not regularly stirred pockets of ammonia and anaerobic bacteria can form, leading to bacterial infections that can be fatal. Its vital sand is stirred on at least a weekly-biweekly basis. Additionally: the tank behind you appears to be too small for the amount of axolotls that are housed in it. I am very sorry for your losses.

Sand is stirred up during my weekly water changes. So I don’t feel that was what caused it. I do a 20% water change every week and focus on cleaning the substrate. Stirring up the sand is part of that.

@@stressinabox That's great with the sand, a lot of people miss that so good to hear! 20% changes for what kind of stocking? I find even with 1 in a 30 gallon I end up needing to do 33%-50% changes weekly to maintain nitrates at safe levels.

So sorry for your loss. I have only had my axolotl for a week and already love him so much, what you have gone through would be awful. I see in the background your axolotls swimming around the tank a lot. Mine just walks around the bottom, I have never seen him swim to the top or around the tank. I hope everything is ok with him?

I’m glad you got answers. Btw this hopefully helps? Metronidazole - metro-ni-da-zole. Metro like a bus, ni as in hi but an N sound... da... self explanatory. Zole like sole but a z. It’s common for dogs with upset tummies, not sure of its other uses.

I have a question, my mom was wondering if we could put a freshwater cleaning shrimp on with my axolotl Bean. Bean isn't fully grown yet, she's about 6 months old and 5 inches. Would she try to eat said shrimp if we got one?

I am sorry about your pets. May they Rest In Peace. In the necropsy, they should of checked the blood cells? Also, I’m surprised she use metronidazole (flygel), I would of used for sure baytril and maybe some vitamins to boost up there immune system. Also, I am not sure, about this one but maybe a UV light, can help with the water quality? Any ways, Goodluck and wish you nothing but the best.

As the video says, they were also put on Baytril as well. UV light is not good for axolotls sadly. She did save tissues and blood from the necropsy but we decided together to put off testing them until we had the results of the culture, since we were both sure we'd get answers from that. Basically didn't want to spend more money if I didn't need to, since the bill was already quite high. She is still saving the samples in case I decide to have further tests done in the coming weeks. The samples will be good for 2-3 more weeks.

@@stressinabox yea, if you can, I would send the tissues, just Incase it’s something more serious because your husbandry is amazing! Just to make sure. Also, regarding Uv light. There’s this filter system, where the uv light is in the filter system. The water runs thru, it so it kills bacteria. I used to have it for my fish and also my clients, used it for there pets.

@@stressinabox so for an example, for my pond and filtration system. UV affects bacteria by damaging the DNA in the bacteria, resulting in death or the inability to reproduce. The bacteria must pass directly in front of the UV lights or they aren't affected. ... Any bacteria floating freely in the pond water are eventually exposed to the UV wavelengths and destroyed. Also, UVC radiation has been shown to destroy the outer protein coating of different virus and bacteria.
