Star Wars: the Bad Batch shows us a different corner of the galaxy this week, with a solo story focusing on Crosshair. This episode also has ties with the great Clone wars chapter "Heroes on Both Sides" and reveals exactly HOW the droids shut down in Reenge of the Sith.

So first let’s take a closer look at that title, the solitary clone. First of all, clones, by definition, are not supposed to be solitary. They are meant to be copies, which is why the clones in Star wars develop such strong bonds, calling one another brothers. The bad batch, in particular, has a strong bond with one another because they are the only irregular clones. They’re a minority of a minority.
The episode title refers to, obviously, Crosshair, who is feeling more and more isolated in the galaxy. Remember, the last season ended with the empire bombarding tipoca city on Kamino, knowing he was still inside. Then, we learn here, he was left for dead for over 30 days on a platform until he was discovered.
That is a lot of time for a clone to be without companionship. This episode even has several poignant shots of Crosshair all alone.
Doug: All by himself…that poor clone…he is…all by himself.
Well done. [high five].
The shit of crosshair sleeping on a cot call to mind a prison cell. This is a twist on the title, meaning that he is almost in a kind of solitary confinement. There is also this really hard hitting shot of him in from of these names of the fallen-but more on those names in a bit.
The point is, crosshair has no friends. His fellow clones want nothing to do with him like he’s the forrest gump of the empire. [clip]
Those same clones are being replaced by conscripted TK troopers. And other clones, like Commander Cody, are becoming disillusioned and going awol.
We begin on planet Dessex, a former separatist world that I believe were seeing for the first time. The episode does a great job of immediately establishing a medieval feel to the world. The people are agrarian, which automatically gives us the idea that they are humble and hardscrabble. And the citadel is essentially like a giant castle, complete with an enormous rampart that runs up to the height of the fortress.
Like all the best star wars, it looks familiar and new, all at once.
Governor Grotten arrives, and that is a pretty great name for an evil governor. [letters on screen] Great at being rotten. Grotten. Get it?
Grotten arrives in an imperial shuttle, which falls somewhere in the evolution between the Nu Class republic attack shuttles of the clone wars and the lambda class from the original trilogy. He is being escorted by regular TK troopers/
Doug: TK? What’s that, like they gonna name them later?
No, TK is the designation given to human troopers. You know, like this. [somehow palaptine]. Sorry, I meant like this [TK-421, ANH]. Whereas the clone troops have CC designations [clip, rookies clone wars]
So these are the regular human troopers that the empire is slowly replacing clones with. The best way to tell is the larger, slightly more awkward helmets. Closer to the cadet helmets that Ezra wears in star wars rebels.
The Governor is named Ames, and I thought it was interesting that she mostly wears this badass-looking mask. It gives her voice a mechanical quality. [clip]. Because, as we see, she is being protected by battle droids, and her disillusionment with the empire has made her more rigid and machine-like. Later this will manifest as her internal conflict, where she agrees ot listen to her humanity, and seek out peace. [not a great plan] [her getting killed]
I’m the kind of nerd who always loves the political stuff in star wars, so I am loving seeing this transition. When the clone wars ended, all of the separatist planets stopped fighting, but it didn't mean that they automatically agreed to join the republic. It just meant that the confederacy of independent systems no longer existed. But now the empire is devouring every system that it can. In the days of the republic, a planet would decide to join, and would send representatives to the senate.

Slight correction, CC stands for "Clone Commander", wheres someone like Crosshair or Rex has a CT number meaning "Clone Trooper". Designations also could be altered, Krell refers to Fives in the Umbara arc as ARC.

@@leviblackwell7997CC is specifically "Clone Commander." Commandos like Gregor or the members of Delta squad have RC ("Republic Commando") designations. And Clone Force 99 are all simply CT, like standard clones, but their numerical designations all start with 99. (Crosshair is CT-9904, Hunter, Tech, and Wrecker are presumably CT-9901, 9902, and 9903.)

I'm pretty sure Krell refers to Fives as "ARC Trooper" in the same way he refers to Rex as simply "Captain." So not by his number but his rank/role. I'm like 99% sure Five's designation remained as simply CT up until his death.

Yeah I agree, Clone Force 99 is CT-99**. Commando are different breeds I believe but I actually forgot about the meanings and insignias. It was a long time ago, I'll have to watch Clone Wars all over again, I'm watching Rebels again just to prepare myself for the Mandalorian season 3 and Ahsoka live action and I'm at 8th book of the Trawn because we have oldies from EU and canon versions so I'm listening audiobooks versions. Hey because I see that you know, maybe there's some book that you can recommend me as a must read? I've read already Exar Kum, Revan, Bane, Aftermath, Ahsoka and now Trawn and I have plan to read Darth Pleagus (I know that I butchered his name but I didn't want to Google it and pretend that I know because I don't and it's not shame) so now when you know, please recommend me something as a must?

I love how this episode felt like a classic clone wars episode, with an action-packed clone-led siege against an army of separatist droids, but flipped on its head. There's this twinge of anxiety watching each droid go down as Crosshair and Cody get closer and closer to the governor, because you just know if they succeed her and the population of the entire planet will fall victim to The Empire. It's so brutal watching Crosshair gun her down, and so powerful hearing Cody impart that wisdom and call him out for making the choice to do so.

The scene where Cody encounters a hiding family and tells them, "It's ok, we're here to help," kind of encapsulates your first couple of sentences. In a lot of ways it was classic Clone Wars, Cody and company "saving the day." The harsh reality is that those people were hiding from him to begin with and that he's serving the wrong side now, and probably was all along.

Bad Batch season 2 is very much acting like a continuation of clone wars animated and not so much bad batch which is not a bad thing at all.. I am glad they made the bad batch more.. clone wars. It fits better in my oppinion. Don't get me wrong I loved season 1.. but season 2 seems to be more of what I was hoping bad batch was going to be.

I loved this episode. The scene with Crosshair being shunned in the cafeteria was a heartbreaking callback to the first episode of TBB with him and his squad all sitting together in a similar cafeteria. I also really need to know what happened to Howzer and Cody.

The scene with Crosshair in his bunk/cell reminded me of a scene in Rebels, where Agent Callus returns from a mission where he was stranded on a moon with Zeb Orrelios. Callus returns to his bunk/cell and it has the same kind of isolated feeling we see with Crosshair in his room.

8:13 I think Crosshair stays with an Empire for a more simple yet pathetic reason. He is afraid of making his own decisions because that entails accountability and risk therefor it's easier to just be an obedient soldier who follows orders, no matter how heinous the actions requested are, because it provides himself the comfort and security of a supposed purpose in life.

Makes sense, as a "good soldier" he's exempt from making choices that would make his life harder, but I think it's becoming harder for him not to make his own choices the more he see's things for what they are.

@@TheRealAlpha2 I think an uncomfortable truth Crosshair is going to have to come to terms with, even if he does go back to his brothers, is that following orders is still a choice. Clone Force 99, Howzer, Gregor, Wilco, and Cody were all faced with ugly orders yet the moral choice of refusing to carry those out in spite of the legal and mortal consequences they'd face was available and they all took it. Despite what he thinks, Crosshair isn't exempt from his crimes simply because someone told him to do them because at the end of the day, he still chose to. There is a long, hard journey ahead for Crosshair if he ever seeks redemption but he can't take that first step unless he acknowledges moral responsibility for his actions.

This is true to real life. Some dude in the military don’t want to leave because it’s honestly super easy, you follow orders, stay fit, and be a good dude. Don’t need to worry about anything. I miss it sometimes, it was a simple but hard life since everything is provided.

The tower stairwell did look medieval, but was built the wrong way around. Medieval stairwells like that would always wind upwards clockwise so that the defenders (who would be upstairs) could swing their weapons with their right hands whilst the attackers would be hindered to do so

That's a popular factoid, but it's not actually accurate, those kinds of stairs were used because they took up little space and were relatively easy to make, there were clockwise and counterclockwise stairs, they weren't all in the same direction

There are two details that I didn't hear you mention. First, as the militia, led by Cody, storm the governor's palace, several residents shreik from fear. Cody tells them, "It's okay. We're here to help." This shows how he still believed at that moment that the Empire were the good guys. Second, when a battle Droid attacks Crosshair, Crosshair calls out to Cody for help, who in turn saves his life. This shows that both men were operating on the Clone principle of brotherhood, and had Crosshair truly been a solitary clone, he would have died. When he hears that Cody goes AWOL, you can see the conflict taking place within him. All those he respected have left.

Something that I found interesting is that I wanted the Separatists to win because they were fighting the Empire, but also wanted Crosshair and Cody to win because they are Crosshair and Cody. It really left me feeling conflicted, which I liked, and I think was the point.

While Cody still stayed on the right side to the end, there was no part of me that sympathized with crosshair in the episode (or in general). I would have rather seen him lose and Cody survive and escape. I think they may be angling toward a redemption arc for CH, but at this point he has done very little to deserve it (especially after killing the rightful governor in cold blood). Honestly if CH eventually pays the ultimate price for his succession of evil acts, I wouldnt cry a tear for him.

They left their brother in trouble, victimblamed him for actions he literally couldn't control, refused to help him (while helping every other random person they met), keep constantly forgetting about his very existence, ran from him, arrogantly victimblamed again and finally left (again) for dead for 30+ days in the middle of the ocean without any supplies. Way to go, "good guys", way to go! So, Crosshair may not be the nicest guy, but the rest of the Batch? Definitely no better. He's not a hypocrite, at least.

One note: Clones have either the designation of "CC" per the video, for commanders, or CT for the regular front line clones.

Yeah, Crosshair feels like being a soldier for the Empire is the only thing that gives him value, and he sees his brothers in Force 99 as being lost and directionless as well as abandoning him. Also he knows all the atrocities he's now committed fighting for the empire and in his mind he had to constantly double down on his duty to the Empire, otherwise every evil act he's committed can no longer be justified in his own mind.

I think the key point is that their control chip was designed around the idea of order 66, so when activated they'd kill the Jedi without question. That was its primary function and it worked perfectly to make the clones into mindless robots to achieve the death of the Jedi. Beyond that, the clones are still human, are perfectly shown in this episode. They have that freedom of choice to disobey commands when pushed to their limit.

I think the biggest thing for me is that Cody is still referring to his troopers by their NAME and NOT their designation like we see most clone commanders/captains do now. I think that even reminded Crosshair that he knew Cody as a friend, even calling Cody by his name in front of Rampart before he's brutally forced to remember that they are only numbers in the Empire's eyes since Rampart doesn't know who he's talking about.

Super random observation but I liked how they used the droid tank (AAT) as an anti air platform, brought back memories of the one they had shooting down the Naboo fighters launching from the hangar in Episode 1

tbf the clones have two prefixes... CC refers to clones that were raised to be officers in charge of other clones, CC meaning "Clone Commander" Regular clones are prefixed with CT for "Clone Trooper" - though some clones like Rex were promoted from lower ranks, which is why he's a CT trooper

I remember when the general conclusion to codys story was that he was so loyal to the republic he would've executed order 66 without a chip, and that he never left the empire after that. I'm glad to see that his story hasn't ended yet, and I can't wait to see if he meets up with rex.

Best episode of the series and maybe a top 5 of the animated shows period. This episode was simply brilliant. I’m actively rooting for Crosshair now, I don’t agree with him obviously but I sympathize with him fully now. He just wants to do right by his government and they keep shitting on him and he wipes the shit off and keeps trying. He is going to break soon and I can’t wait.

I think this episode is meant to, not only give us a snapshot of what Cody is up to, but also show us that, despite Crosshair’s willingness to be everything The Empire wants him to be, The Empire does not value him. There were some moments where I had some hope that Crosshair might seek out his Bad Batch brothers.

I think Cody and other clones can thank the Jedi, and particularly Yoda and Plo Koon, for their individuality. I'm specifically thinking of 2 season 1 episodes of The Clone Wars where Yoda encourages them to develop their own personalities and names (something the Vice Admiral obviously doesn't appreciate in this episode), and a TCW season 1 episode wherein Plo Koon impresses upon a squad that he did not consider them disposable. It's evident that the Jedi instilled a much deeper way of thinking that adds fuel to the fire of clone dissidents. Not only where they robbed of the free will they were developing, but force to kill the very allies that helped foster that free will.

Maybe it’s just my childhood trauma talking but I see Crosshair as a narcissist. When he last saw the Batch he kept trying to push guilt on them for “abandoning” him, which is classic narc behavior. Narcs also cannot admit when they are wrong and would rather suffer, loudly, the consequences of their choices, than change.

Great episode. Maybe the best one yet, and a Clone Wars epilogue in many ways. I wonder if after Order 66 now that the Clones are past that if the chip has any further ability to control them? Order 66 worked in many ways as a mental hijacking override as they lost their "free will" to make choices. The Emperor, for all his "12 steps ahead thinking" apparently didn't plan for an order that might be needed after Order 66 to keep them in line...such as an order number 999 that commands them to follow any and all orders from their superiors without question and at all costs.

I think Crosshair continues to serve not because he believes in the Empire but so that he could survive. He knows very well any defectors would be executed by the Empire and for Crosshair such type of death is a disgrace.

I think considering his manipulated betrayal of Obi-Wan, setting up Temuera Morrison to do a Cody atonement in Obi Wan season 2 would be superb. Also, there were several moments where Kevin Kiners themes and swells were extremely reminiscent of Vangelis's Blade Runner soundtrack, which is not even remotely a dig. i think it's wonderful for the music to evoke another concept where individuals created for singular purposes begin to question and rebel for their own choices and existence. I know we live in a BA (before Andor) and AA (After Andor) existence now, but Bad Batch is still carrying the torch for some great expressions on SW characterisations, especially the power of many vs the power of one. There's a lot of great meditations on the idea of "crossing the line" and the "journey back after", but Crosshair is proving (like Ahsoka) to be another fascinating exploration of the grey realm between black and white absolutes.

It's weird that the Clones are the most compelling characters in all of SW, I can relate and feel for them much more than I can for the Jedi or Sith for some reason. Also, I think at this point, Crosshairs has done too much to be redeemed, he'll probably have a heel turn by series end but he will die, more than likely saving the bad batch, that'll be his "redemption."

I really liked Commander Cody's line when the door opens revealing the scared non-combatants, "We're from the Empire. We're here to help." Which hearkens back to President Ronald Regan's quote from years ago, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help." Because just like Cody's promise of peace was completely unfounded and empty, so is the "help" they are promising. Also, it was cool to see Cross-hair shoot down the barrel of the tank to take it out.

A clever easter egg I saw was when they activated the Commando Droids, the music became similar to the dubstep theme when the Dark Troopers are activated. Another seen I liked was when Crosshair mention how some Clones were traitors like the Jedi, you see Cody react to a brief realization of how he acted on Utapau

I really appreciate the references/parallels to Andor (and while I'm not one for fake-sugar cereal, adding in Syril eating cocoa puffs cracked me up), along with the veteran clone in Kenobi (one of my favorite moments of the show). The other parallel I noticed is that Crosshair's arc/experience reminds me a little bit of Kallus - basically abandoned by the Empire he served, shown to be alone in his cell mulling things over, etc. I don't know that he'll really have the same outcome, but it's just another way of showing that the Empire isn't really loyal to its own.

Regular Clone Troopers have the designation CT. Cody is CC-2224 because he is a Clone Commander. Also important to note that the Batch are the ones who call regular troopers "Regs". They do this because they are the only "different" clones. Or at least they feel themselves to be different.

This episode was amazing; it was like the 'Zuko Alone' episode of Avatar: TLA (which is appropriate, since Filoni worked on that show before SW)...Also love how Cody's meaningful 'we make our own choices' comment is a perfect flip on his empty, regurgitated repetition of 'good soldiers follow orders' at the start. Also, Kiner's score was so poignant! After Crosshair took the shot, it's mostly dialogue-less until they return, because the score just said it all (especially for Cody); foreboding, conflicted, dread, haunting...Sterling work ^^

It almost looked like Cody’s grey armour had a tint of orange when he was negotiating peace. Kinda like showing the light in him returning and then the armour goes back to grey when he watches the governor die showing that he belongs to the empire.

One thing I noticed is that the storm troopers do not look like the original trilogy storm troopers but closer to the original designs by Ralph McQuarrie. I know that for Rebels they relied on not only his original concept art but the aesthetics for episode IV (plus various hair styles popular in the ‘70’s that crept into the movie) to define how the show would look and it seems that Bad Batch is doing similar things. The designs for this show are all over the place: a little classic SW; a little Clone Wars; a little McQuarrie art; some Rebels; and of course original designs. I love it. It’s one of the best looking animated shows so far.

The fact that Crosshair's armor is black, besides looking like the first Death Trooper gives a feeling that he's a black sheep. Like a sheep, he follows orders to the letter but he's an outcast. To his Clone brothers, to the Stormtroopers, to his superiors, everyone. The only people who never saw him like that was the Bad Batch, his family. Crosshair at this point is telling himself a lie, that his skills, his duty, his loyalty is what is desired, no, NEEDED by the Empire. When the truth is, he's just a tool of the Empire, meant to be discarded. He never needed to be needed. He needed to be wanted. By his brothers, his family. And the kicker is, he always was.

I got the feeling that when he said Cody went AWOL and “funny how these clones keep disappearing” that Cody is dead. It’s a good way to cover up the noncompliant clones and I have to assume Cody questioned the killing of the governor

Also note the clones were used to sort issues so that if losses happen they can just shrug it off as getting rid of more of them. Cannon fodder at worst, clones pull through at best. Then the CK troopers move in and occupy.
