Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Elektron Digitakt. Is it more than an overpriced mono drum sampler? Will there be death threats?

The Microkorg gets hate proportional to how insanely well it's sold. It's arguably one of the very best selling synths ever and certainly the best selling synth of the last 20 years. That's gonna breed some haters...

The great thing about your channel to me, is this: Some folks will wake up, discovering it's not the machine that makes or breaks a musician. Great machines are the ones that allow your expression to flow. What's terrible for one, is great for another. Wanna know what one of my favorite machines of all time is? Don't laugh! Promise? -Yamaha SU700. I bought one new, when it came out in 99. I worked in kbds/pro audio at Guitar Center in Roseville Michigan at the time. I made so much music on that weird thing, I literally had to turn one entire large dresser drawer into a 3.5" disk storage. I bought 3.5"'s by the case. Before I went to the SU700, I was on the Akai S900, sequenced by various other machines. 🤪😁 Kero over in Canada has my old SU now. He installed a microSD drive. (I think) 😂

@@mechasartre3694 What did you hate about it? Just curious. I sold mine on eventually, but only because at some point I'd outgrown the sound and those stupid mini keys... but for me it was, and is still an effective 200 bucks (used) worth of synth...

I admit, I'm an Elektron virgin. My first purchase was the Model:Samples based on the strength of Stimming's review. There seems to be a special nature to the Elektron workflow and people who know it inside and out seem to love it for what it is. I haven't familiarized myself with the Model:Samples enough yet to know whether I like that workflow, but I'm pretty sure I do. The M:S is an absolutely amazing machine for its (admittedly discounted) price and you cannot go wrong with buying one for $299. I think it's a damn steal. The thing has a way of making me want to play with it and I often find myself fairly shocked at what it can do. If Elekton's more expensive stuff is as good as it seems, then I think they're probably worth buying. It seems like opinions heavily depend upon whether they like the Elektron workflow or not. I rather like it. It's one of the most intuitive instruments I've ever owned.

I enjoyed your thoughts on this. This is maybe the 10th item I own that you've covered. lol. The Digitakt was my third Elektron box after the Analog 4 and Analog Rytm (both Mk 1). I have zero regrets about buying it even though I would have been fine to just stick with the Rytm. I had several years with the Elektron workflow so it was easy to jump onboard with the Digitakt. It's actually a lot of fun to play both drum boxes together.

Enjoyable as usual. And of course, Pilz can make an old Nokia sound like an Access Virus. Crazy talent. Thank you for doing this. Now...the Digitakt. I bought it in 2018, with a lot of love and excitement in my heart. It was finally going to be my 'go anywhere, ditch the laptop, MY sampler'. Nope. Couldn't get into it. Could barely get it to make a sound. And I've been making electronic music for over two decades. Watched some videos, read the manual, decided to just dive into it, and nothing. At some point, the Digitakt started to piss me off. Sort of like a malcontented ex: no matter how much attention you pay her/him, it's never enough. Eventually, I returned it to the retailer, even though it actually cost me shipping. Boo. I've since thought about getting it again, but each time I look lovingly at my all software studio, my Akai APC 40 MKII and my classic Roland A-49 controller, and think: oh Digitakt, there is no room for you here. Sad, because the demo tune at 6:05 is a thing of beauty. Excellent video.

OP1 next please! Anyways glad to see somebody approaching it with a critical style rather than only trying to justify the massive price. When you can for example buy a midi controller and an ipad and apps that turn it to a music making beast that can do more than a digitakt or op1 and for about half their price you really start to question... Sure these devices have that tactile feel and the aesthetics are on point but these are all computers at the end of the day and a pc/ipad can do everything a digitakt does better for a better price with the right software and midi controllers also you get a device that you can do other stuff besides music! But I also understand why elektron/teenage engineering devices are overpriced after all they appeal to a much smaller audience compared to general computers so if they wanna make money the profit has to be high per unit too.

The Elektron workflow will always have its critics, for sure. Their instruments require a bit of patience, but once you get there, it's awesome. I find I don't mind the mono samples, because of the ability to change panning per step (and any setting per step). It beats other samplers hands down with its modulation and trig conditions. Given what some other companies charge for grooveboxes, its price is reasonable, given the quality of the device. I get the hate over the learning curve, and surprising limitations, but frankly they couldn't do everything. It's jumping over to the Elektron way of thinking that leads to "bad gear" quotes. Nice episode!

Great Job! It's without question my favorite instrument in my setup. It just has to be placed in the correct context. Its a sampling drum machine, with an incredible sequencer attached. Don't bother trying to do anything else with it other than maybe sequencing a mono synth. Sample into a daw or an mpc, edit your samples there, and then import them. Its entirely worth the effort. I wish it had some extra effects built in, but that's my only gripe.

First off-- that boombap beat you threw together is dope as hell. Secondly.. I feel like the Digitakt is insanely overpriced, for what it does/can do. It's now $60 more than the Akai MPC One. It used to be about the same price until everything went up. Digitakt: - audio tracks are monophonic - midi tracks are polyphonic, but you need external hardware (and only 4 notes per track) - basically a "9-track sequencer" if you think about it-- the audio track (8 sounds, with sample locks, etc), plus 8 four-note midi tracks - Chance / Probability (HUGE plus) - mildly confusing screen - no touch-sensitive pads (same-feel step buttons, as function buttons) - step / chromatic layout (a little confusing for some) - no timestretch - 64mb of sample storage (per project) - 128 total patterns (per project) - sampling directly into it - great effects - 64-step sequencer MPC One: - way more than 64-step sequencer - drumkits alone, are essentially 128 audio tracks (polyphonic, if you want) - 128 MIDI tracks (per Sequence / Project) - 8 linear audio tracks (per Sequence / Project) - detailed, full-color screen (touch if you want... you don't need to touch it, most of the time) - touch-sensitive pads (classic 4x4 grid) - polyphonic sequencing (internally or externally), more than 4 notes - monophonic sequencing (internally / externally) - timestretch / looping mode - 2GB of onboard RAM - SD card storage (up to 512GB, I think, maybe more) - sampling directly into it - built-in plugins (quite nice-sounding!) - great effects - configurable XY fx (with touchscreen) - scale mode for melodic instruments or plugins - chord mode (plus, input your own chord sets!) - step-sequencing (not as intuitive as Elektron's, of course) I like Elektron stuff a lot. I own a Model:Samples, which satisfies my cravings for chance/probability sequencing. It has two less tracks than the Digitakt, and no sampling... but, it's only $300. Transferring samples is pretty easy, via a computer. And while I wish the font was a LOT smaller when browsing for samples... (hello Elektron??), it truly does a great job. If you're craving a Digitakt... go straight for the MPC One and save yourself a few bucks. It's totally worth it. And this is coming from a longtime Akai hater. I LOVE my One. Every time I watch videos on the Digitakt, I just don't find it worth the insanely high asking price. It should be $500, not $860. And what it does, it does well.... but... I don't know. It needs some more firmware updates to make it worth the asking price.

This was a very good, and fair presentation. I think a lot of us feel inspired by but also frustrated with Elektron. “The Elektron Way” is actually a thing. I have owned several pieces of Elektron gear, and the only piece I still have is the Analog Heat, which I really love both as a distortion box and stereo analog filter. It is a must for digital synthesizers. I even bring plugin synths out through Analog Heat, or take drum samples I like and resample them through Analog Heat. I got comfortable enough with Octatrack and this, but couldn’t find a way to make it fun or useful for what I do. I’m just so married to ITB drums now, and have worked for so long at how to make them not sound boring, that whenever I use hardware drum machines now.....its almost lacking for me. Enjoying your channel. Keep it up.

The Digitakt is a great machine but I sold mine. Actually, I've bought and sold two. It's not because it's a bad machine, it's because in my setup it was too redundant. I have a MPC One and a TR8s and the Digitakt just wasn't needed. Also, the MPC One can do a lot of stuff that the DT can't. My main gripe about the DT is the lack of timestretch. That said, the DT is an excellent machine and I think the form factor is just about perfect. It's also a hell of a lot easier to learn and use than the Octatrack.

I'm along the same lines. I'm selling my Digitakt because I'm just more comfortable with Impact XT in Studio One with a Presonus ATOM controller. More immediate too as I constantly end up fiddling with the Digitakt to get the sounds I'm after and tend to just lose my creative vision with the song I'm working on because of it.

Great episode, good on you for keeping things surprising & unexpected. Jeremy aka @RedMeansRecording did a whole album called “Soft Music To Do Nothing To” which was a live jam with only the Digitakt, Digitone & Analog Heat & it’s one of my favourite works. I think it & also a lot of Jeremy’s RMR videos as well as the other creators you mentioned do a great job of demonstrating the strengths of Elektron gear being so different to the norm instead of behaving so similarly to common gear edit paradigms. It makes sense that some bounce off it so hard, yet so many end up really digging the creativity it offers.

the cycles rules. it is actually incredibly cheap for it's complex sequencing and performance abilities and the interface is extremely intuitive. you can produce percussion sounds that aren't possible with other drum machines and it's not so limited once you learn how to properly utilize synthesis and sound design techniques, especially once you understand the power of elektron machines is in combining the internal modular capabilities (modulation/p locking/sound locks/retrigs/ctrl all/pattern reload) with the sound sources. the only people that criticize elektron are the people that didnt take the time to properly get to know what they are capable of
