@@bigdavoc1 yeah and I change big notes in supermarkets, hotels, upmarket businesses, and use smaller notes on the street. I have been going to Thailand for 25 years, have had some large cash transactions buying farms, right down to buying a small meal. I never flash the cash as I have seen others do.

It happened to me on my first visit to Bangkok back in 1987, I lost all my money/traveler cheques after only 2 days on the ground and only had 200 Baht left! Luckily I still had an expensive new Nikon camera that I managed to sell a few days later for 14000 baht! I still had almost 3 months left on my holiday though (back then swedish citizens got 3 months visafree). I found a cheap GH on Soi Sri Bamphen for 50/night. I didn´t want to admit defeat and go home earlier! I had read that Koh Samui in those days was a cheap place to stay so I took a nonaircon bus to Surat Thani and then the ferry across to Koh Samui and went to Mae Nam Beach where I found a simple hut on the beach for only 30 baht /night! I then lived cheap beachlife for the reminder of my stay. Food was only 10-20 baht a dish back then and local fruit was plenty, so I managed to hang on til a few days before my flight back home almost 3 months later, when I took the ferry/bus back to BKK for a couple of days before I flew home! 😄

I think it was my 8th or 9th holiday here and I left my debit card 💳 on the dining room table! It was the only card that I usually bring. I did have about $2k cash so it wasn’t a cheap Charlie holiday like “Jeff’s”! I had made many good friends here and one of them was the owner of the resort in Bang Sayre that I wanted to stay at again. I told him that I couldn’t stay this time because of the debit card 💳 issue and he r said stay and just send him the money when I got back! That’s what I did and had a great holiday!

Great parable and well told. When I think of "cheap Charlie" I think of someone who talks big and spends small. To me this is more of a story of enjoying the journey more so than the destination. A lesson we all need to take to heart.

To be a Cheap Charlie, is more a philosophy or life than a necessity for many. Some of us when spend in luxury items or services we feel that we had been seen as fools. Paying for things double or triple, when do the same service than the cheap one. Thanks for the story , very interesting and well presented.

Great story of good turning bad, then turning back to good. On a similar note. When I was living in Pattaya and got stuck out walking when the torrential rain hit, I got pulled in out of the rain three different times that lead to three great friendships with surprisingly young Thai women. No BS, just great fun with them. I'm planning on going back to live in Pattaya again this July...

I think i've had those ham and cheese 7-11's every day i've been in Thailand from the first day. they are a life saver when you need a break from thaifood. I keep my money separate into larger bills and smaller bills and never flash them. I also keep my cards in separate locations so i can afford to loose one and not get stuck. This is a great story on how to salvage a bad luck start.

I travel with 2 sets of debit and credit cards from 2 different banks (ie. 4 cards) One set in the room and one set in a money belt. I do not bring cash from my home country but simply use an ATM whenever my cash runs low. Banks will freeze or block your cards very easily now due to fraud so best to be prepared.

One of my biggest fears......when traveling internationally is that I'll lose my passport and/or wallet (with cash and CCs) or get denied entry into a country (for whatever reason and under whatever circumstances). Rrrright.....it's still a country's prerogative to allow or deny entry. OK, Ok, ok......UNLIKE, with what is happening at the USA's southern border. But, that's not the subject here. So then, I also have the "emergency medical" fear. Yes, I should buy travel insurance. But, so far, I've never done it. Call it gambling dangerously with chance.
