I love the way the justice systems work in this universe: Two children went missing? Hang an old lady! Case closed! Someone broke in and killed a young mother? Send her traumatized son to the asylum! Case closed!

Okay well the first one was a long time ago where burning women for dumb things was normal. Secondly, the child was the only one there that they could prove. The mocking from police was very unnecessary, but unfortunately also pretty realistic.

They're very quick to assume the kid killed his mum. Edit: Most people would think 'intruder' first, especially if the kid talked about a monster, and even if they didn't find evidence of a break-in then they should also have worked out that he didn't do it. If it were simply rumoured or suspected that he did it, while he got carted off into care, it would make more sense.

I mean, the kid is at an age where he believes in the Tooth Fairy, assumes it was coming that night, is it that odd that he'd think that's what the killer was even if mundane? How many kids if they saw a pasty guy break into their house after, say, watching Dracula or a Halloween tv episode would think the burglar was a Vampire? At the very least, without having established issues with his life before, I'm inclined to think a random joe would think it was an intruder before the child who is also clearly distraught over his mother being dead.

@@troodon1096 Because the only option outside of the impossible tends to be the answer. No one came or went. It was only him in the house. Telling stories about some supernatural monster? Supernatural Monsters are supposed to be impossible so.. It only leave the kid. Plus do you see how often police get things wrong and how few muder cases actually get solved? Of course they would try to pin it on the kid. Tie it up nice and easy so there is no need to scare the locals.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. All the executives were young, stupid and inexperienced, as was the director, who'd only directed one student short film prior. And then he went on to direct "Battle: LA" and the brilliant "Wrath of the Titans." Ugh. The early drafts of the script were actually pretty cool, but you could never get around the silliness of the main conceit: That's it's A) The Tooth Fairy, and B) the whole "she can't get you in the light" bullshit. The original monster as designed and created by Steve Wang and co. (including me) was awesome! And it was a pleasure being a young artist storyboarding action/horror scenes with that sweet looking monster! We built it, painted it, animatronics, special blacklight paint to make her veins glow, etc... And they boxed it up and shipped it to Australia for the shoot... And then director Jonathan Liebsman made the FX team ( I didn't go) sit around on set in Australia for about three weeks, trying to shoot the monster a couple times, but never able to figure out how to shoot it. Finally, they were sent home and fired, and Stan Winston's team was brought in to deliver a generic zombie woman as the Tooth Fairy. Tragic. The editing and constant re-writes are a whole other issue. My step-father, John Fasano, was one of the writers/producers on that show, and he was manipulated and re-written and edited and... yeah. Everyone of talent was fucked over on that movie. Oh, and did you know that star Cheney Clay committed suicide a few years after? Anyway, I'm happy to tell you more. Look me up on Facebook, my name's Jesse D'Angelo. I live in Los Angeles, CA. Ohhhhh yeaaaaaah! You can check me out on the "Rock n' Roll Nightmare" episode of a KZfaq show similar to yours, "Good-Bad or Bad-Bad" if you're interested in hearing me talk about a terrible 80's film I acted in as a young kid... Anyway, look me up if you feel like it! Cheers! Jesse

That's certainly fascinating reading. Even the trailers had a shifting backstory for Matilda (was that a rewrite itself?), but that shouldn't be surprising since 60% of the trailer was all deleted material. I did check out your IMDb page, and I see you did storyboards for Sky Captain - I'd imagine that was pretty fun, I remember that movie having a great visual style.

@@JesseWolfboy the original monster design at 1:22 was awesome. Have to love producers who don't know shit yet love to meddle. :P So I've always been confused by the plot a little in that, is she a ghost or is she like a flesh and blood monster? I've always interpreted it as she's a ghost but then again there's a lot working against that theory.

Yeah it’s sorta funny how this is basically a crappier, dumber version of Lights Out-the story mechanics there were a bit confusing at times (especially when they brought in the idea of using a blacklight to cheat around her invisibility), but the monster was at least consistent. This also kinda feels reminiscent of Boogeyman (which would’ve released only 2 years or so later) that deals with similar ideas of a monster targeting children, childhood trauma, and overcoming fear, but while that movie isn’t a stellar masterpiece I’d probably say it’s a better version of what this movie wanted to be.

I was wondering the same thing as well regarding Kyle having problems. When the hell was he having problems? Although we don't see him associate with anyone other then Cat and his mom from what I can tell he seemed completely normal. He even seemingly had friends and was in a sports team. It's like the movie shoehorned in the "problems" so the cops would've automatically think Kyle killed his mother. But they could've simply have him spouting off about the Tooth Fairy. I'm sure that would make anyone shift the blame on him.

This movie would have been better if it had kept the original tooth fairy design and have her kill her victims by ripping their teeth out so that she's staying true to her curse but instead we get what is basically a female Freddy Krueger that claws people to death. So yeah, its a PG-13 Nightmare on Elm Street as you said at the beginning of the review.

Little factoid for ya, Buck; the prologue had actually happened - just in the town of Port Ferry, in Australia, not "Darkness Falls." Matilda Dixon actually existed; she did suffer the burning of her face after her kitchen caught fire while she was baking a cake for some children. Two children did turn up missing, and the town did blame Matilda. They ran her out to the woods, catching her, taking off her porcelain mask and hanging her. Then, as she died, everyone was stunned to find the two missing children right there with them. Tradition had told that she had placed a curse on Port Ferry, which is ridiculous; but that's where this story got its idea. And, ah, by the way? She WAS known as "the Tooth Fairy."

Just to corroborate what has been said, as someone who can speak from personal experience, to have suicidal thoughts at 10 is about one of the only things this movie does have that can happen/is believable. Unfortunately the execution and delivery is what makes it ridiculous as that's something you don't tend to admit to, at least not when you're that age
@wjd23104

I would have thought a kid was more likely to blurt out something like that, as they tend to have a less developed understanding of social norms. I think it is actually (perhaps accidentally) more believable in that this is not his mum or someone he even knows well. I think you could argue that their shared experience, makes it plausible that the kid would float the idea of suicide. Seemingly this is done in the hopes he is not the only one to have had suicidal thoughts.

Caitlyn must really be messed up, spending 12 years obsessing over Kyle. They never even had a chance to have a serious relationship in the first place. Doesn't matter if Kyle was her first kiss, they were 10 fucking years old! Even as an adult she couldn't move on with her life? She probably didn't know what Kyle looked like as an adult before he returned. But hey, who knows? Maybe she's secretly turned by serial killers and felt Kyle was the only one for her since he supposedly killed his mother. Maybe she even tried it herself and killed her parents, which explains why they're not in the picture. 🤷🏿‍♂️

If they were this creative the rest of the movie and were more consistent with how much light hurts Matilda, it would've been a lot better. 6:49 - To be fair, this child's actor is very good. He looks the part and delivers his lines very well. He looks like he's been traumatized and hasn't gotten any sleep in a long time. 11:20 - No doctor with a fucking brain would ever do that, especially to an already traumatized child.

There is a beyond rare condition where someones skin and eyes are extremely sensitive to light, it doesn't blister or burn, except they are very easily liable to get sunburn, but it causes them pain and they can loose their eyesight if they are in bright light for too long. However you can't get this condition from being burned as it's a genetic condition. I believe that it is due to them having their Skin not developing properly and it being too thin to block out harmful things our skin easily blocks like UV for example. So they either have to wear light blocking clothing or stay in the dark for their entire lives. Last I heard there were only two people with this condition, one somewhere in South East Asia and one in either India or Pakistan (I could be mistaken of their locations because it was from a documentary that I saw a few years ago)

Perhaps the Tooth Fairy wanted to kill Kyle before she killed Michael because Kyle has escaped being murdered by her for longer than Michael has been alive? Perhaps the murderous ghost will gladly kill anyone around her chosen victims? After all, she killed Michael's mother.

As it happens, from personal experience, it is shockingly easy to sneak a razor blade into a residential mental institution. Can't speak to suicidal thoughts at 10, though I did see some comments below attesting to that

Honestly a lack of sleep can do some things to your brain. I had really bad insomnia even though I was very tired I couldn't sleep. I tried turning to alcohol to try to sleep and by the time it got bad enough I wanted to die to finally sleep I went to the doctor for help.

The opening where they show the jar with boiling teeth makes me laugh for some reason. And even after all these years I have this to ask; so this tooth fairy is only evil in terms of who sees her? So otherwise she won't do a thing to and still reward you with money? This is something I feel like they skipped out on because they focused so much on the 'EBIL!!11' aspects while not showing the other side of the coin? Eh? EEEEEEEEH?

Yeah, his only other known role was being in The Shield. Interestingly, the actress who played Cat was recently in WandaVision.

This man is acting link a 10 year old trying to kill himself is some impossible thing. Hate to say it but this sadly happens for real. Sadly bullying, abuse, and mental illness doesn't have a set age and too many younger people lose their lives over it. Yea a kid that young is rare but not impossible. But back to the movie, idk if it says how long the thing has been after him but constantly being harrassed by something like that as a young child.... that shit will fuck you up.

I wanted to like this. I really like Emma Caulfield but it's sooooooo fucking boring. I hope Emma is still working. I don't why I get this and Boogeyman confused. I think it's because they're both such fucking boring movies.

Pity about this film. It did have potential especially the original design but alas.

Children usually lose all of their baby teeth by age 12, but a boy might be 13 when he loses the last one, so that scene is plausible.

I will admit, this movie is a big disappointment. It would have been so awesome if they had stuck with the original design for the tooth fairy rather than the design which is a basically a female version of Freddy Krueger. Apparently they scrapped the original design because they thought it would have been a waste of time not showing it fully and then have the big reveal the end. I guess they don't understand that less is more and nothing is scarier.

20 year age gaps between kids are not so rare as you think. 1. the parents have a kid or 3 when theyre in their twenties, and then either they decide they want another baby when the rest of their kids are grown, or its an accident. 2. in primarily religious families that dont use birth control and believe its God's will to have as many kids as possible. ive known families with 15+ kids, so ya, the oldest could easily be 20 years older than the youngest. Thats also how you get uncles/aunts/ younger than their nieces/nephews.

I'm not sure if this would count in case this name was used in other places or film, but I think another ripoff would be that the town "Darkness Falls," sounds suspiciously like "Dark Falls," from the Goosebumps book, "Welcome to Dead House."
