Summary: On the planet Eternia, Skeletor and his dark army overthrow the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull expecting to acquire her power. He-Man, his old friend Duncan "Man-at-Arms" and his daughter Teela are attacked by Skeletor's soldiers and they defeat them. They also rescue their prisoner, the inventor and locksmith Gwildor. He explains that he was lured by Evil-Lyn that used his invention the Cosmic Key to open the gates and seize the Castle Grayskull. He-Man and his friends retrieve the prototype of the Cosmic Key trying to release the Sorcereress but they are defeated by Skeletor and his army and Gwildor uses his key to open and portal for them to flee. They come to Earth but lose the key. Meanwhile, Julie Winston, who grieves the loss of her parents in a plane crash, and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan find and activate the key, believing it is a foreign musical instrument. On Eternia, Evil-Lyn locates the Cosmic Key and Skeletor sends her with a group of mercenaries and soldiers to vanquish He-Han and his friends and bring the key back. Will they succeed?

I've lost count of the number of fantasy films that are set on Earth to save money - He-Man, Smurfs, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc. The formula is ALWAYS the same: 1. Character lives on fantasy world. 2. Character travels through some kind of portal or device. 3. Character arrives on Earth (usually LA, New York or Vancouver). 4. Teams up with some locals. 5. High-jinks as the character tries to make sense of this weird world. Fart jokes. Pop-culture references. 6. Stuff happens - beats the bad guys, etc. 7. Character returns home.

No arguments that Meg Foster managed to get a great performance out of indifferent (at best) materials, but Langella is hammy fun and even Cox did her job by successfully portraying the spunky teen (maybe not Oscar worthy, but you can definitely see how she became a household name by no other virtue than - again - doing the job she's been given).

I saw this on video with a bunch of friends in college. It was so terrible we couldn't help but laugh so hard we almost wet ourselves. Frank Langella obviously had too much fun as Skeletor behind that terrible make up. Years later when I had kids, it was on TV. The 8 year old thought it was the one of the most awesome movies ever made, right up there with Super Mario Brothers. Now that he's 20 years older I bet he wouldn't be so generous with his criticism. :)

A couple points: there was a Mattel version of the story and characters before the Filmation cartoon (which was different), and this film should not be taken as an adaptation of either one, per se. Also, this storyline and characters were actually an unofficial adaptation of Jack Kirby’s “New Gods” comics, with Eternian characters in place of Darkseid and the others. The cosmic key was the motherbox, etc.

If that's in any way true we should then be thankful that it missed the green light. Even with a multi-million dollar budget and (then) state of the art special effects---can you even begin to picture a THREE HOUR adaptation of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE? Such a prospect truly buggers the imagination.

My nephew was REALLY big into He-Man at the time and was very excited when the movie came out. I was watching the cartoon (eh, it let me pass the day and sometimes there would be good bits), so I got volunteered to go with him. I really wasn't expecting much from this film, but it was much better then what I expected (not that my expectations was a hard bar to clear). My nephew LOVED it. 🙂

Eh I still have some fondness for it. Even as a kid I found Courteney Cox very cute. Also that leg injury gave me a nightmare back then. 😋 I think Dolph at least looks good as He-Man and that version recently was in the Masters of the Multiverse comic series too and had action figures last year. It's Cannon trash, sure but eh it passes the time OK for me. Even just for Cox and the performances of Langella and Foster. And amusing that the Sorceress would become Ross and Monica's mum in Friends too. 😋 And as others said even the cartoon did have He-Man's mother come from Earth so they could have mentioned that in the film but I guess it might need Adam explained too? Maybe. And speaking of Prince Adam, well, He-Man wasn't always Adam. In the earliest mini comics with the original figures He-Man was a barbarian from a tribe and the harness made him tough and the axe and shield were his main weapons, the Sword was the macguffin (it was about combining the half-sword you got with the He-Man toy with the purple half-sword that came with Skeletor). Adam was added by DC Comics as a 'Clark Kent' identity when they did He-Man comics of him meeting Superman and after that the Filmation cartoon used the Adam identity and made it famous. OK I know too much trivia about all this and I'm probably already boring people so I shush now. Good night. 🙂

About the animation, though, I never quite got why the good eagle-shifting sorceress lived in a castle shaped like a skull set in a dark valley, while the evil skeleton mage ruled from a peak amidst mountains. Wouldn't that make more sense the other way around?
@robinbailes5236
@robinbailes5236 3 жыл бұрын
According to documentary The Power of Greyskull (which we are reviewing this Friday) the idea was that Greyskull was just the castle where the sword was, it wasn't good or evil just a source of power for good and evil to fight over. Although I think they retro-fitted that explanation because they liked the castle design.

Well this may be bad, but at least it's still better (even as just a guilty pleasure) than the more recent animated reboot. I was only 2 years old when this film came out, so I missed the whole 1980's He-Man kid fad. Looking back and trying to put myself in the context of those kids who really got into this at the time sadly doesn't seem to be working... which is a shame, considering how much I love 1980's pulp sword-and-sorcery films.

Frank Langella as Skeletor: Good actor, lousy mask. Couldn't they have given him better makeup? My "favorite" Big Budget Letdown was not a TV version; it was the big screen epic "Excalibur"! I'd call it Nicol Williamson's hammiest performance.
@ashleys9397
@ashleys9397 3 жыл бұрын
I have a little bit of a difference of opinion with you regarding EXCALIBUR. It's a rather flawed and certainly less than successful movie, but at the same time it does contain a fair amount of good stuff. It was directed by John Boorman, who's definitely a usually great director with a very strong visual sense. (Indeed it was his visual style & feel for production design that made EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC a little more bearable than the rest of that movie.) But I'll concede that your opinion of Nichol Williamson's performance is probably valid; he certainly made for a less than impressive Merlin. But I have to add that hammy is as hammy does. For example: Have you ever seen Vincent Price's performance in Corman's THE PIT & THE PENDULUM? It well qualifies as USDA Grade A choice Ham.

Needless to say, they weren’t thrilled.

Why do i get the feeling that Evil Lyn would be down with anything in the bedroom? And why do i get the feeling Skeletor would stand there just watching, all the time doing his crazy laugh? I mean is Skeletor enjoying what he's seeing, or just laughing at the performance taking place under the sheets? Also is Evil Lyn a biter & scratcher or a screamer? personally i think she would be both!! This movie raises so many questions yet gives no real answers.
