Roush even then was above average race cars. Matt and Mark were at the top of their games. Mark found out what Hendrick was like at Hendrick in his later years when he was well past his prime. Admitted he stayed at Roush too long in the Dale Jr. Download. You can find the video where he speaks about Hendrick being akin to "NASA" compared to Roush Racing.

@@tantan-ik8nn Kenseth was a missed Phoenix struggle away from a possible championship in 2013. 2015 was the fastest car, winning 4/10 races until he was turned by a guy who had a get out of jail free card. 2016, was a lap in a half away from a championship opportunity. 2017, would have been at Homestead if it wasn't for a technicality, that I'm pretty sure only lasted that year (maybe not, either way). His entire tenure at Gibbs, he was a race away from a possible championship. Even 2014, was winless but highly competitive. As for his Roush Career, had some strong seasons, including a championship. Point is, Kenseth is a damn good racer.

I honestly think that this just goes to show how great Larson truly is. Multiple wins in that car and after he left neither Kenseth nor Chastain did much of anything notable in the same equipment. Kenseth being a future HOFer past his prime is one thing but look at what Ross Chastain has done with Track house and it's pretty obvious equipment was the real issue with the 42. Even Kurt Busch getting a couple wins in the 1 for Ganassi shows how good HE was/is and he was much more competitive with his new team this year before his concussion. NASCAR is one sport that's gotta be littered with "what ifs" when it comes to talent not getting a shot with a great team. Hell imagine an alternate universe where Larson started his career with Hendrick? Might be a multiple time champion by now. Another good example is Aric Almirola..... Once Danica was done taking up a competitive seat in the 10 and he got a shot he was far better than he ever was in the 43, just past his prime. I mean he almost won his first race in the same car Danica was struggling for top 20's in! Which goes to show the other side of the coin where people who attract sponsors get a top seat undeservingly which is just as unfortunate. Today's example: how much longer will Cole Custer get to occupy a seat at Stewart Haas based on his last name?

I recall when Matt filled in for Bayne when the 6 car was struggling and it was a rough start. But the team caught on and really started performing at a decent level. I cannot fathom how poorly Ganassi handled the 42 car with as good of sponsorship Matt had all year. How can a bred organization not be able to setup a car or adjust to a driver. I hope Chastain doesn't continue this trend. Because after Larson was "fired" the moral was dead. If I was Ganassi I would of been telling that team off. You work for me not for Larson. If you don't like it get out.

Matt Kenseth's 2020 was honestly pretty understandable. He hadn't been in a car regularly in a few years, was past his prime, and was unfamiliar with the current package, in a year with no practices -- and he still came second at Indy. I think a lesser driver would have had a bigger repair bill from all those cut tires -- I forgot how early he seemed to notice some of those and prevented those hits from being harder than they were. That's not even getting into how he and the team had to quickly get to know each other and how to get the best out of everyone in a condensed schedule.

I wouldn't hold 2020 against anyone. The way Kenseth, Newman and even Kyle Busch prep for a race, is heavily influenced by feel of track conditions for specific weekend. Doesn't make them or their teams better or worse. Hell if anything it just shows how impressive Ryan Newman was in 2019. He grinded, through the entire race weekend every single week. Not to mention Kenseth was back to essentially save face for sponsors. They probably wanted an established, respected driver. Kenseth came in and did that for them. For coming off the street, I'd give him a B. Matt never had any seat time at all with the 550 hp bs. But I am sad to see him go. Matt was never as popular as Dale, Jeff, Tony or Jimmie. But he was almost arguably each of their biggest rival. I'll say it again, damn gonna miss that guy on track.

Saying Matt Kenneth is not a hall of famer is like saying Jimmie Johnson isn’t a hall of famer because of his past three season 🤦‍♀️

Ever since that announcement back in April or May about Matt Kenseth coming back to NASCAR to replace Kyle Larson, I was pretty excited to see how he can do in the #42 car! He got his Top 10 finish at the May Darlington race this year with no practice or qualifying so that’s pretty good for him even though the 2nd May Darlington race he didn’t do so well on and same with the other races that he got bad luck in. I was excited when he was about to get his win at the Brickyard 400 this year in the McDonald’s scheme but it turns out he only finished 2nd and then we got Kevin Harvick winning instead. And by the end of the season, I was pretty disappointed after seeing Matt Kenseth having a bad season this year. I don’t know if it’s because of the bad luck he’s had or because of the no practice no qualify thing? I feel bad for him and also Eric Estepp because he’s also a Matt Kenseth fan too and I bet he’s pretty disappointed of what he saw from him.

I'll be honest, Matt was an utter scrub and a half this year, circumstances be damned. While he had some standout runs he performed quite miserably whenever he wasn't caught up in an accident. Hell, how he managed to get a top 10 at Darlington, I'll never know, now that we know the results of his tenure this time around. Not to mention, he was the one who collided w/Jimmie Johnson in the regular season finale @ Daytona & contributed to Kevin Harvick's disastrous Martinsville collapse back in November. It seems like he was in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. If anything, I say 2020 hurt Matt's legacy pretty badly, when looking at the fans and how they saw this year go down for him. He was running at the back, wrecking a few times, and he just did not look like his normal self at all. Just a terrible year for the 2003 series champion. Hopefully time can heal and this catastrophe of a season can be erased in fans' minds sooner than later. He didn't deserve to go out in such a negative light, I'll tell you that much.

Nah his legacy was set after 2017, these were differing and difficult situations he walked into, including sharing Trevor Bayne’s seat in 2018. 2018 was as much about getting information to help better Roush Fenway, especially considering Bayne was having a horrible season at that point anyway, and just wasn’t cutting it in the 3 seasons prior, which wasn’t all his fault as Roush has been mid tier at best and fell way behind the big dogs since he first left after 2012 and especially after Carl left. Then when Kyle Larson had that GIGANTIC BRAIN FART and temporarily ruined his career, Ganassi was first and foremost looking for a solid personality to put in the #42 the sponsorship would get behind so they wouldn’t bolt altogether, personally I figured Chastain would drive or if Ganassi did pull anyone out of retirement it would have been Jamie Mac so I was pretty surprised when they announced Kenseth would drive the #42. Idk what the thinking was behind him coming back after not driving anything in 2019, if he was just doing a favor or wanted one last shot , probably some combination of both and I would think he had to have known if the season even restarted at all that it was going to be unlike anything he was accustomed to in the past because of COVID, but not to go as badly as it did, especially considering their performance did not improve all the way up to the last race so yeah it was very hard to watch but at the end of the day, he is a former Cup champion, multiple Daytona 500 wins, was a top tier driver for 15+ seasons, really all the way up until the end with JGR, when we all thought he was going to basically be forced into retirement, came very close to at least 2 more championships on top of what he did in the Busch/Nationwide Series and aside from his incident with Logano, wasn’t a villain at any point ( and I don’t really think he was a villain after wrecking him, at least in the public eye)

Matt Kenseth *definitely* a first ballot Hall of Famer 🏁 He gets overshadowed by Dale Jr. as their careers literally overlapped but Matt has more wins *(39),* beat Jr. for *2000 Rookie of the Year,* *2-time* Daytona 500 champion and of course, *2003 Winston Cup Series Champion*

Insane how the 42 car was a realistic championship threat going into Daytona and it ended up being a 20th place car every week.

Outside of the Brickyard 2nd place finish, his season was atrocious. No doubt was a top driver for about 15 years, just was not accustomed to the current aero package

I think the main reason Matt struggled so bad was no practice or qualifying. I'm sure they were still using Larson's setup, and their driving styles are the complete opposite. He wasn't used to this downforce package, and with the exception of the first race at Darlington and Indy, as a longtime-Kenseth die-hard (I think I'm the only Kenseth fan bigger than Eric) I almost forgot he was even out there.
