NS 5812 on Norfolk Southern leads local C46 on the Silverplate branch in Cleveland Ohio. This a former Pennsylvania Railroad branch that had over 20 customers within a mile back in the 1920's. It connected to the PRR mainline at the west end and the NYC at the east end. A 1927 property map shows a 4 stall roundhouse at the west end. I've heard that only the steam engines allowed on here were 0-6-0's and such. Only one customer remains, Cleveland Industrial Warehouse which handles metal products. They switch this customer 3 times a week.

Cool video! That line used to service my dad's old factory, Cleveland Twist Drill, at E. 49th. CTD laid off everyone and moved to Tennessee in the early 80's. The building is being used by a variety of arts and small business concerns. Probably still smells of machine oil and high carbon steel.

Cool. I have seen a map that showed what businesses owned the adjoining property back in the 1930’s. I didn’t realize they were in business into the 80’s. Be interested to see photos of this line for the 80’s. Someday I’d like to model some of this.

CTD closed this facility in eighty one. I remember it clearly. My dad had worked there over twenty years and now was unemployed. I remember him taking me to the unemployment office. So he could file his monthly report, while I filled out job applications so I could take a job to pay for college. The branch line was in use back then. But the fact we didn't use the siding anymore for deliveries. All their shipments went by truck.

Scott, great video. I loved the switching (and the long-lens look down the twisted track)! Details about customers per mile then and now much appreciated as well. My brother and I will be headed to Cleveland 11 or 12 Dec to check out the RR scene there. Your time permitting, any suggestions you might have would be very much appreciated. Thanks again. Gerry

Thank you. They run this line m-w-f in the evening usually between 5-8. I don’t watch too much of the mainline action. CSX runs a local up from Parma to the Clark Yard daily. There’s plenty of spots to see the CRWO working the steel mill on both sides of the river. The CCR and Newburgh both work daily too so they’ll be around. Their in rough neighborhoods but nobody’s bothered me yet…

That is insane that Class 1 Railroads have tracks that are used regularly in such horrible shape. Sure most of the traffic here appears to local spur line stuff, but each derailment is costly no matter the cost of rerailing a few engines and cars compared to total overall cost.

That's such a weird picture of all that power and one lonely little salt car. Thanks for the info on the history as it looks like 50 cars should be crammed in every siding. Perfect cars for selling Rust-Oleum but they're well on their way to retirement. Is that the salt loading area directly in front coming from one of those underground domes out in Lake Erie? Nicely done

Your voice-over says salt is in those hoppers - where was that load picked up at? I was wondering why the trainmaster would assign all that power for 3 revenue cars. LOL
@ScottTaipaleRail
@ScottTaipaleRail 8 ай бұрын
Lol wasn’t really intended as a voice over, I was explaining to my 9 year old that was filming with me. The salt is loaded at the Cargill mine west of the Cuyahoga river here in Cleveland. This local will generally work Cargill, head east to work the silverplate then shove west back to Cargill. I figure the may have had a big train to pull out of there.

I was switchman at now riot Rail's Kendallville Terminal Ry. in IN. A one mike-ish stretch of ancient Pennsy track, the GR&I, serving still busy Kraft confectionery plant. Corn syrup tanks and covered hopper sugar cars from NS. The old foundry now razed. Ugly bldgs used to be a casket maker and womens' bloomer place. They may be gone too,, it was 2008 when I left.
