When I was growing up in Cape Breton, in the 1950s, my father, who managed a bank in Sydney, and mother, always took great pleasure in showing visitors to the island around to the many wonderful historic and scenic locations. A common venue was the top of Beinn Bhreagh, which, back in those easier times, was often open to the public, with all its history and beauty. One slide taken by Dad on Kodachrome 828 about 1950 is my only tangible memory. Now a resident of Central Canada for more than 60 years, I have taken my growing, now grown, family to the foot of the mountain often, hoping that, just once, it might be possible to enjoy that vista. The wishes of the estate owners to protect their privacy, and allow AG and Mabel to enjoy their peace is understandable, but I would still like my wife to see that beautiful panorama just once. Oh, well....

The thumbnail is actually Louisbourg. Mr. Grosvenor's family are intermarried with the Bells. They and the McCurdys have been associates of the Bell's since Alexander's time. They are all also associated with National Geographic, also since Alexander's time. When I lived in Baddeck I had the good fortune to meet and be on speaking terms with one of his grandsons. All three families maintain summer homes on the Bell estate which can be seen from Baddeck if you look across the bay.
