Correction ~ I miss spoke about pulling film - When pulling film, the negative develops for a shorter amount of time than normal... I accidentally said Longer .... Brain Fart
@Turgutyeter
@Turgutyeter 8 ай бұрын
Also you are actually overexposing the film by 1 stop, means +1, not -1
@c.augustin
@c.augustin 8 ай бұрын
@@Turgutyeter Usually, when marking the film, pulling is indicated by -1 (meaning one stop less sensitivity/development) and pushing by +1. Yes, this also comes with exposure correction by +1 (pull) and -1 stop (push) - but this is not over- or underexposure, since sensitivity is changed (well, a bit more complicated than that, let's just say the exposure index EI is changed). Overexposure by +1 stop means that the film is developed for box speed and just given more light.

It is time we use the old terms uprating and downrating, when exposing, and pulling and pushing when speaking in context of development. When you uprate a film, you push the processing to compensate etc. In my early days as a pro, shooting film, it was what was used around these parts.
@BadFlashes

I overexposed (iso 100) and I pulled in development hence the -1 I did both
@256k_

@@BadFlashes you could say you just treat the film as if it's iso 100 and both shoot it and develop it at 100. i like the other comment's suggestion of saying uprating and downrating, sounds clearer what is happening, we're just changing what the box speed is vs just overexposing or underexposing but then developing at normal speed. it confuses me all the time still

Upon seeing images from Phoenix, I really thought pulling it would be a good idea to diminish some of the weaknesses it has, but I didn't see a lot of people pulling it, and I'm glad Caleb did it. Not only that, these are legitimately some of the best results I've seen out of this film stock! Nice work Caleb!

Having watched several videos now on Phoenix, I think these were my favorite results anyone had. Actually particularly enjoyed the box speed results on the FA. Nice job, my dude. 🙌🏻 Also, I've also photographed that cafe and gas station in Onyx, it was fun to see what frames you ended up grabbing in comparison to what I did.

Oh, sick dude! That place was so awesome. I’m definitely wanting to go back with some medium format or a large format. And thanks! I’m glad that you did the results. It’s funny that you like the box speed stuff. Honestly, some of the shots are quite nice still boxed, so I definitely feel ya.

First of all, you're absolutely right that we need to support this project! As I said on Jason's video, I'm not a huge fan of this film at box speed, but I'm very interested to see what they come up with next. What I am a big fan of is the breadth of info and vibes watching you guys' videos back to back. I love Jason's coverage of the people behind this project and showcasing their passion, and I love your video's more "scientific" approach which shows us more of what this stock can really do! The smoothness of the -1 pull in harsh light was nutty and I liked the way it shifted the colors as well. Like I said, after Jason's video I was going to buy it for the sole purpose of supporting the project, but you've shown us a different side of it that I really like and now I'll buy it to experiment with! Now to get a scanning setup...

COLOR! I really like the pulled images but some of the box speed shots are just right! I really do like the colors! Giving me kodak gold vibes a little. The grain difference with just a stop is kinda crazy. That film stock sweatshirt is so cool as well. Also, that ricoh focal length and sharpness is so good. 100 is the sweet spot for that film from what I can see. Have a good weekend dude.

Regardless of the results, another color film by a major lab is a total win! I'd like to see the results of normal film shooting, overexposing 1 stop and normal development. We never pulled unless the conditions were too bright to achieve a proper exposure which those Nikons are more than capable of achieving. Either way, always good to see a new video!

You’ll definitely have to give it a spin! I didn’t actually misspeak a little in the video I believe and said you keep the film longer which is not true. Cool video Erik! I've owned this camera for a while and it's really a tank. Feels like a small DSLR. Good grip, so many features, very solid! The lens is awesome and the zoom range something very rare for it's time. The displays made it hard to see what you are doing because of it's low resolution and small size. But in 2004... it was great! Sadly the internal battery was empty and i couldn't replace it... that's very annoying. Keep it up, good job! 👍🏻

Didn't really matter that much how the film looked to me tbh. It's literally everything we beg for and that's more film and more availability of film. Will buy some as soon as I can and plan on shooting some with some adapters in some brownie cams and maybe some 30's medium format pocket cams to see what the potential could be on a 6x9 for a 120 variant. Never know we could look back at when this came out as a pivot point for film popularity and nostalgia kind of like Agfa RSX or other films. I work at a retail store that doesn't really carry much photo equipment but we do sell FUJI 400 3 Packs and we do sell a few a week which is great to see.

The comparison at 7:57 is amazing, but it's especially amazing because the box speed shot looks so sick. Far from neutral but super interesting.

Video @ 3:56 Multiple Nikon F3 images show a gradient & darkened right side of the frame. This is common on cameras with focal plane shutters that are out of calibration (curtain travel times are no longer matched up). It will get worse wasting film; so it needs to be serviced...

@@BadFlashes It's most obvious at the 2,000th and 1,000th shutter speeds (your F3). Also VERY common in the 1,000th of the Leica M6 model that you own (I fix these issues all the time)... Your camera Tech😎

Thanks for the video. Going to try rating at 100 when my rolls arrive. Either that or manually meter for 120 which I think is the native film speed .

I find it quite funny that you used a Kodak box to store the new Ilford film in 😁 And BTW, don't waste your money filling tires with nitrogen; the air we breath is already 78% nitrogen.

I had the same thought, but pulling is shooting over exposed followed by a shorter development time. So I think he was trying to demo a pull vs a roll that was just overexposed and developed normally.
@andrewshieldsphoto
@andrewshieldsphoto 8 ай бұрын
Pulling and pushing only happens in development. Rating it one stop over would be shooting it at 100 with normal development. He may have rated it at 100 and had the lab pull it one stop. There's some method to that madness. The shadows fully develop early on in the process. So pulling or under developing really only affects the highlights. That may explain the favorable results.
@BadFlashes

I did indeed overexposed … the. I had the lab pull the roll in dev…. I did miss speaking in the video, unfortunately saying keep the film in the soup for longer… I do know that it’s less time in the developer… dumb me

Leave the photos on the screen a fraction of a nano-second longer. This isn’t tic-to where I have to rewind and pasue constantly to see wtf that the text comment says. I’m here to look at pictures, so let me. Otherwise, positive things to say, and I have decided to choose Phoenix as my primary film to support a third party and make it happen, I’ll evolve with it if I can. I think photography needs this more than it can afford to pass it off…for any reason.
