I'm so happy. Its been so long since I've seen Badlands. Terrence Malick had started out in 71 as an uncredited writer for 'Dirty Harry', you can almost hear it in the dialog.

Not a bad reume for a writer with those two films.

Sissy Spacek is one of the best actresses of all time and one of the most modest and genuine. After this wonderful film she went on to play the titular character in the very first Stephen King adaptation, 'Carrie' (1976) and was so superb in that part, it propelled her to stardom and she eventually won her Oscar for playing Loretta Lynn in 'Coal Miner's Daughter' (1980). It was whilst making this film that Sissy met Jack Fisk whon she is still married to today and has two kids by.

You can definitely see after this film why she was picked to play Carrie. She portrays that quality of being a "little off" to perfection.

"Hey, I found a toaster." Fun Fact: Directorial theatrical film of Terrence Malick. Theatrical movie debut of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez (uncredited). Historical Fact: The film's plot and lead characters are based on Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate. In 1958, they embarked on a murder spree that horrified the country. Airplane Enthusiast Fact: The plane that takes Kit (Martin Sheen) away at the end is a converted Douglas A-26. In fact, a picture of this exact plane can be seen on the Warbird Information Exchange web site. Casting Notes Fact: The actor originally cast as the architect who rings at the rich man's door did not show up, so Terrence Malick played the part himself. Malick later wanted to re-shoot the scene with another actor, but Martin Sheen refused to re-do the sequence with anyone else.

Good choice! In my top ten movies, I'd say. It's especially great for us photographers as Malick seems to be channelling the Memphis photographer William Eggleston in this, whose work he most likely followed. I think it's a movie that kind of fits into the 'banality of evil' notions of the time following WWII. It's difficult to say what pleasure Kit takes from killing. It seems to just be his go-to solution to difficulties. He's more happy to chat with his fellow young men, but he'll quickly pick up his revolver if the situation plays into his on-the-run fantasy. Holly is someone who simply cannot feel right or wrong and in a way is more pitiless in her absence of emotion and empathy than Kit, who at the very least has some regret over shooting Cato. She could equally have been a placid wife had she not met Kit, and it's possible that a lot more people would be alive, or maybe Kit would have always ended up a Starkweather or a Whitman. Finally I think the reaction of the cops and the soldiers at the end is one of surprise and in the end a sort of bemused fascination and empathy, as Kit seems so much like them and is such a cheerful oddball in the face of the electric chair. The man signing him off to in the plane doesn't regard Kit as an evil man, and probably judges him a nice young man with a few screws loose that made him a killer, and that the entire thing was something of a damn shame. Most folk there at the airport take an odd sort of satisfaction, sat on the hot macadam or stood in the cool shade of the hanger, knowing that they'll remember this strange encounter for the rest of their lives.

Bonnie and Clyde (1967) is a must-watch. Assuming you haven't seen it yet. Iconic 60s film.

"Sheriff, when the man pulls that switch, sir \ And snaps my poor head back \ You make sure my pretty baby \ Is sittin' right there on my lap" --Bruce Springsteen, "Nebraska" Badlands is fictional, but loosely based on the case of Charles Starkweather. When you're ready for another Terrence Malick film, check out Days of Heaven. PS. Gasoline was leaded back then and everybody was slightly crazy because of it.

This movie is loosely based on the the real life murder/crime spree of 19 year old Charlie Starkweather and his ex-girlfriend who some considered to have been his hostage, 14 year old Caril Ann Fugate which transpired in Nebraska, USA in the years 1957-1958. A good documentary of the actual events is the Showtime feature titled 'The 12th Victim' from last year.

This is a good movie. Very different, as you say. Very monotone. She wouldn't go out and kill people herself, but I don't think she really cared about that, except for how it affects her. This was inspired by the Charles Starkweather case.

Even the line of hoping he would fall in the water so she could watch him drown. I don't believe it was to end the situation they were in, but more out of morbid fascination.

@@IrishGuyReacts Yes, in the movie at least, they both seem sociopathic. The worst thing that could happen was for them to meet. She was very passive and might have led a boring life without him. He wanted to show off and maybe would have led a boring life without her. How much better that would be for everyone else. (Her father was even kind of . . . not right. Killing her dog to get back at her.) No opinions about the actual case, though. You should check out the movie, _Heavenly Creatures,_ Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey's first film, directed by Peter Jackson.

So glad to see you watching this. Great film! Uh.....gotta disagree at 5:21. He's not being 'smart' by faking his name whenever he signed something. A nobody like him? Actually he's very, very disturbed. See him looking around, then standing atop a dead cow? ....I think this film is based on true events, here in America in the 50s

Hello, check out a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armante Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples. Directed by Ridley Scott.
