THIS WEEK WE PUT IN AN RSJ BEAM TO MAKE AN OPENINNG SLIGHTLY WIDER AND TALLER.WE TAKE OUT THE BOX SECTION LINTEL AND TWO COURSES OF BRICKS ABOVE THEN INSTALL 2 NEW PADSTONES TOO .
WE USED 6 ACROWS AND 4 PLANKS TO PROP THE CEILING AND WALL, THEN A SINGLE ACROW TO PUSH THE STEEL UP TIGHT TO THE CEILING JOISTS .
WE ALSO NEEDED TO REPAIR THE EXISTING WALL TO GIVE IT MORE STRENGTH ...ENJOY

I put in a lintel between kitchen and dining room in a 1970 built house. The spec required an engineering brick stiffening "nib" on the exterior wall and blue brick pad under the beam. The internal wall structurally supported the roof purlins AND a steel that spanned about 2.5 metres to the back wall of the house. This wall was single row "breeze block" so this had to be doubled up for about a metre to where another partition wall met the supporting wall. All good and overall we might even have a stronger house after fitting the new lintel. A wider foundation was needed. I dug out the floor adjacent to the structural wall to meet the foundation concrete. There was no concrete - the blocks were sat directly on the clay about 3 feet down! Oh ****, I had just undermined my house!!! I Akro propped the existing lintel and Building Inspector gave permission to clean out the hole and mass fill with concrete. Left if for 2 days and took out the Akro props. No harm was done but this house had been built with about 4ft (maybe more) of central structural wall sat on nothing but clay. Depth was good probably why there had been no movement. The new engineering brick went in with lots of ties to the existing breeze bock and the new RSJ lintel went in the usual way with Akro props and spreaders to support the floor beams.

Hi lads obviously l'm not a builder or l wouldn't be asking these questions . You put mortar on top of the steel and as you are winding the acrow it displaces and some falls out ,is that to make sure there is no gaps above steel ? Oh and caught the comment about painted steels is it a requirement ? Cheers lads your vids are great l'm a wanna be builder.
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 3 жыл бұрын
We put the mortar on first for exactly the reason you say. It’s impossible to fill that joint once the steel is in place plus we know that it will be packed very tight . As for the steel I think pint is required on outside walls but it’s good practice to get them painted . On this occasion paint was requested but the fabricators forgot 🙄 . That’s a great question and one I have asked BC a few times ...I think the pad stone is designed to receive a bolt or bolts through the steel into the pad stone but even with this the steel is normally built in so shouldn’t move ..But my issue with the standard house mod pad stone is this The steel is sat on the concrete pad stone which in turn is sat on “ knocked up “ mortar onto a lightweight block ( and don’t give me the 7n routine)😂🤣 so yes why not a couple of concrete commons or a fully filled 2nds engineering brick which as memory reminds me is about 60n ...Just sayin 👍👌
