all excellent points. the one thing i'd add is that jumping as high as possible and striking the shuttle at the highest possible point of its trajectory is an enormous aid in making this shot, so much so that i dont even bother with this shot unless i have time to jump for it. if there is no time to jump, like during a fast retreat, i will usually prefer a slice or reverse slice. jumping as high as possible to make the stop drop is effective because 1) you are striking early, 2, you are making maximum use of gravity pulling the shuttle into as steep and short a trajectory as possible, and 3) a high jump when you are perfectly positioned to smash gets your opponents to commit to receiving a smash and it is difficult for them to break from that position to go to the net quickly. if you do not jump when making this shot, keep in mind that anything short of perfection will give your opponent time to take the shuttle early and he'll have a lot of options since he is near the net

Aloha Greg and Jenny, such an awesome video. I am so impressed by the detail and depth of your explanation of the stop drop shot. Definitely a shot to master. Understanding its mechanics and technical aspects only enhance my appreciation and awe of players like Watanabe, who execute it well. At the club level I have never seen this shot and thanks to your video I now can humbly begin to learn to not only begin to practice it, but will be able to defensively recognize it too. It is an amazing shot, it will take a while, mastery begins with a first step. Thank you so much for the keys that will unlock this devastating weapon. You guys are awesome. Stay well.

Hi Greg and Jenny, great video as always. I wanted to ask if you could expand a bit during the hit itself. I know you should have a loose, relaxed grip at every moment before contact but on impact it looks like you lock your elbow and wrist while squeezing the grip and keeping things locked while you're following through as well. Is that correct? It also seems the contact point is slightly under the shuttle? Thanks in advance!

I'm I'm not mistaken, looks like Yuta more often plays a bit sliced drop shots (usual and reverse) and plays them at high point of contact (with downward trajectory). The plain stop drop with lower point of contact is also in his arsenal for sure. But it looks to me he uses it less often as sliced one are more effective in general.

Hi, great video like always, really love to see badminton from the view of actually professional players. If you are looking for topics to cover, I like to know how to actually test the speed of shuttels. I know the official rules, but it is completely ignored at club level (lower leagues). The official rules talk about advanced players hitting the shuttle, but most club players take an empirically approach, that is, once they have a good 'feeling' about shuttle speed, they take the distance to the backline , lets say 150 cm (yes!) and every shuttle which flies farther, not even hitting the official area, are slowed down. I'm kind of new to badminton (3 years in a club now, lower league) and have issues to handle different shuttle speeds in league games. I would be interested in how do you , as professionals, test the speed of your shuttles outside official tournaments ? Do you have some tips to test the speed of shuttles in a consistent way ? Or how to play with slower/faster shuttles if you cannot influence the speed ?

i think 1 more key ingredient to stop drop in beginner/amateur level is making sure that the opponent thinks you have good hard smash so they will defend slightly backward from the mid court every time you got comfortable lifts or else they will just defend towards the mid court because they aren't afraid of your smashes and making your drop shot pointless.😁😁
