ANNALENA BAERBOCK: Night flight? "I think that's exaggerated!" This is what the Germans say about the scandal
A flight by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock from Frankfurt to Luxembourg after the start of night flight restrictions has sparked a discussion. According to a report in the Bild newspaper, the Green politician's plane took off shortly before midnight on June 23 after attending the European Championship soccer match between Germany and Switzerland. The Foreign Office said on Tuesday that, unlike the other members of the federal government present, Baerbock did not fly back to Berlin immediately after the match, but instead traveled on to Luxembourg because of the meeting of EU foreign ministers starting the next morning. She then flew directly to Israel, the Palestinian territories and Lebanon on Monday afternoon.
At Frankfurt Airport, night flight restrictions apply between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Delayed departures are possible until midnight, including for "flights of particular public interest." A spokeswoman for the responsible state economics ministry explained when asked that, according to long-standing administrative practice, flights by high-ranking government members represent a purpose of public interest that, as an exception, justifies a delayed departure after 11 p.m. "These flights, such as the one in question, are exempt from local operating restrictions."
The deputy FDP federal chairman Wolfgang Kubicki asked on Welt-TV: "Why did Ms Baerbock have to be at the game in Frankfurt?" If her duties in Luxembourg were so important, then she should have concentrated on that. The chairman of the Hessian FDP parliamentary group, Stefan Naas, called it "green double-talk at its finest." They "put citizens off flying" and then flew from Frankfurt to Luxembourg. "184.36 kilometers as the crow flies. Really?"
