How to get Better at Mario Kart: • FULL Beginner Guide | ...
Bagging: waiting near last place for good items (bullet bill, shock/lightning, star, golden mushroom, mushrooms) and using them to make a comeback. This lets you get to 10 coins and stay away from attack items, and you can potentially dodge the shock or do item smuggling.
Running/frontrunning: Driving as fast as you can at all times to try and stay near the front. This is the normal way to play mario kart, but your items will be worse on average, and you will be susceptible to attack items like red shells, green shells, fire flower, boomerang, bananas.

Funky is not getting in anyway. He got into mario kart tour late, and there is no evidence that Nintendo knows that funky is popular. It is wishful thinking that makes people think he will be in. He is competing with Pauline and Diddy. It does not look good for his chances. I want him to be in the game too, but he probably won't. Let's not get our hopes up. It will only hurt us later.

If you're talking about the one on the Comet, he has a better rearview due to him being on an inside-drifting bike. So this means he has better sniping. Not to mention he knows the best lines that most pros will take, so he traps the lines using bombs such as the Squeaky Clean Sprint example where Troy took the bait.

Really don't like bagging as a viable strategy. It's a different kind of skill for sure, but it feels so much more gimicky than front running. Let's bring some Funky Kong/Flame Runner to MK8D, and see how it fares at front running.

Would love to see a vid showing which tracks are considered frontrunners and which ones are considered bagging tracks! This was a really fun video My menality is that tracks with lots of off-road (Cheese Land, Kalamari Desert) are bagging tracks, and straightforward tracks (Maple Treeway, Rainbow Road) are frontrunning tracks?

Frontrunning is better when you play a track that lacks shortcuts, or when there are many lower ranked players in the lobby. Bagging is better when you have a lobby where many people destroy eachother and when the track has tons of shortcuts

as someone who plays competitively, i hate bagging. it makes the game less fun and it feels like all the skill of racing you learned is just gone. sadly, i cant deny its strength. its viable, and it makes the game annoying to play. i hope that some day it gets fixed so that we can have true matches of skill instead of just grabbing items and praying.

I feel like the more scientific way to collect data would have been one person sticking to one strategy for every race, and then switch strategies and do the same tracks. That way you can take skill level into account for the comparison

I think bagging is a lame strategy. This is because the game is not really a racing game when bagging. When bagging, you do not need to have tight lines, or have good defensive skills. Any "mistakes" you make don't matter, because they are made up for by a broken item. This does not make bagging an easy strategy, but it erases some important aspects of a racing game. It might be fine if it was less reliable, that way youbare not rewarded for losing. This is a consequence of the distance based item selection, rather than the placement based item selection.

I respect the opinion, and it's well articulated. I agree that it is too strong in this game, but I disagree that there is some fundamental issue with bagging. Bagging does not require as much of certain skills like you said, but it also requires more of other skills. Mario kart is a racing game but it is also an item management game. A frontrunner is tested on their ability to basically do the same thing over and over, with very little decision making. A bagger needs to know every shortcut far in advance to plan their item usage, and stay far from 1st to get good items, but not too far to guarantee a loss, and decide which items are good and which are not at every moment. And because you can't always just "win right at the end", you will often have to spend 1 lap driving normally. So a bagger must have frontrunning skills to win, but a frontrunner does not need to have bagging skills to win.

@@Shortcat321 I see what you are saying. I think it comes down to what kind of game you want Mario Kart to be. I mostly want it to be a racing game. That is what motivates my preference for frontrunning. I do not think baggers have no skill or anything like that. I think that it should be possible to make a comeback, and that the kind of item selection system in Mario Kart 8 is superior to that of Wii and the others. I think it is just difficult to balance that system to exclude bagging.
