Troy is the sixth member of the band, and plays all sorts of non-metal instruments..besides the Uilleann pipes he's playing here (not electric), he also plays flutes and whistles, bouzouki, and guitar (acoustic and electric), and he sings, too. In an interview he was asked if there was anything he couldn't play as well as he'd like and his answer was, "ice hockey." As you move beyond the Wacken performance you'll see/hear a lot more of him. A good Troy song is My Walden, live at Tampere...he plays pipes and low whistle on that one, and sings a bit, as well. Another good one is Alpenglow, live at Wembley, where he and Emppu play a unison guitar/whistle solo. Another suggestion for more of him: the acoustic version of How's the Heart is just him, Floor and an acoustic guitar and it's amazing. Oh, and that was his voice you heard at the end of Perfume of the Timeless. In fact, if you go back and listen again to the second movement of that (after the lizard jumps into the water and the text scroll begins), you'll hear his pipes right there with all the other instruments.

I was going to say the same. The main difference being you blow into bagpipes with your mouth and you play the uilleann pipes by pumping the air into the instrument with your elbow. Fun fact, "uilleann" is "elbow" in Irish.

Troy is playing uilleann pipes ("Irish bagpipes"). He plays ... many instruments, but these are his specialty. They are absurdly difficult to play. When you get as far as "The Greatest Show on Earth" - my personal favourite Nightwish song - they feature heavily.

This is indeed the best version Actually Sept 30th 2018 not 2019. Tuomas says the South American fans are the most enthusiastic, and you can see why. Here's what Marco said about touring South America: "Floor handled it the best. When the fans were wreaking havoc at the hotel lobby, she just sternly said: " Hey, people, it doesn't work like this - please get in line, and everybody will get their photo and autograph." I'll be damned the disorderly fans actually obeyed her. That's a huge accomplishment in South America" Floors costume here is a custom-made one-off by Royal Black Couture in Austria. This is in fact, the best of the recorded concerts, followed by Wembley 2015. Uou should do more of this concert. As a drummer - Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean from this concert. Some fact about Triy, who is pkaying Uilleann Oipes here: Troy plays: Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone On the pipes(please learn the setlist): "You have to be slightly insane to play them. They're not easy." Tuomas told me he'd been working on "The Eyes of Sharbat Gula" for a while without really hitting the mark. As I was listening to an early demo I thouht it sounded so intriguingly hypnotic that it really didn't need explanatory lyrics. When I mentioned this to Tuomas he said it had never occurred to him to think it like that. The song became an instrumental although there are some ethereal human voices in the background. TONI: Troy, the other new member, didn't have to jump in as dramatically [as Floor], but he has become an irreplaceable part of this group, too. If there's tension in the air for some reason, Troy casts a spell and magically dispels the bad vibes. EWO: Troy radiates the kind of cheerfulness that we sulky northerners can only dream of, but I guess some of his positive attitude has rubbed off on us, too. TUOMAS on touring with Troy: We start preparing about 30 minutes before the show [New York Hammerstein 2915], each of us in his or her own way. Floor changes on her stage clothes and warms up her voice in her dressing room, while we`re warming our fingers in ours. Back in the day, I used to get scared stiff before the show - it was just nauseating, pure horror. It all changed when Troy did some kind of a hypnotic trick to me in Los Angeles in 2012. I really don't know what happened during those twenty minutes, but afterwards, I haven't really panicked before going on slage.

Multi instrumentalist Troy Donockley(from the UK) is playing the Uilleann (ill-en or ill-yen) pipes, the Irish version of bagpipes that uses a bellows squeezed by the elbow to inflate the bag. Uilleann is the Gaelic word for 'elbow'. Troy's is the voice you heard at the end of "Perfume of the Timeless". He is singing 3rd harmony here. They have played this since Marko left, with Troy taking over most of his vocals lines. He started playing with NW in 2007, made permanent in 2013 along with Floor. He also plays whistles, bouzouki, guitar with and without EBOW. This is probably the most fun version of this song, with that S. American crowd and Floor dancing all over the stage. She wasn't 100% here either, she had been sick with the flu a show or 2 before this. Song is Anette era, from the Imaginerum album, though this tour( Decades tour) played a lot of older Tarja era songs. "My Walden" , "While Your Lips are Still Red" and "7 Days to the Wolves" , all from Wembley 2015, for more of Troy's instruments.

Those are Uillean pipes (Irish "elbow pipes") so-called because of the bellows under Troy's right arm. Troy - what a musician - sings, plays guitar, Uillean pipes, Low whistles, Bodhran, Bouzouki and probably more... Troy Donockley - English composer and multi-instrumentalist; played with Nightwish since 2007, became full member at the same time as Floor. That is generally found somewhere in Tuomas's stuff, but there is a huge feature a of Troy on the combo Elvenjig/Elvenpath. I think Elvenjig may be his and they thought it sounded cool. There are also some acoustics with him and Floor on Planet Rock of Nemo and How's The Heart. Some others, while I don't think they've done lives of it, Edenbridge has On The Other Side w Lanvall playing the hammered dulcimer and I think someone's playing a mandolin. Eluveitie Call of the Mountains has about everything, except growls, though they have a guy that can and does on some, Amorphis Amongst Stars ftg Anneke Van Geirsbergen has the old school flute sound on their keyboard. It seems like many of the bands in that area work a little jig in once in a while. :)

Those pipes are standard acoustic ones, with a small mic attached to the chanter. Troy caps off the drone pipes in the band, because the accompaniment comes from elsewhere. Troy Donockley joined the band at the same time as Floor. Not every song needs them, but you will see him playing many other instruments. One of his tours de force is when he plays his PRS guitar with an E-bow. It is incredibly hard to make that sound good, and he seems to do it effortlessly. Try The Greatest Show on Earth kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9h9qtuWl9_FZXk.html and The Islander kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc98idtmlq--moE.html These are from two different concerts, Wembley and their home concert at Tampere in Finland.

However, the permanent status of both Floor and Troy was officially announced only later the same year for marketing purposes. Everyone took the Troy-bait, and for good reason - Troy is dang good at everything he touches. BUT, as a drummer (you), can we talk a second about the little skiffle-beat that Kai does during the first half of the pipe-solo? Many, many, many years ago, I sat in on some incredible Irish acoustic jams in Portland, Oregon. At the time, we (Portland) had the absolute pleasure to have a couple incredible Northern Irish musicians move into town to escape the constant battle and bombing that was daily life in Belfast, et al. Kevin Burke and Michael O'Domhnaill (fiddle and guitar/vocals) were two members of the incredible Bothy Band. Portland had a lot of fiddle and guitar players at the time, and a few pipers, but we initially lacked anyone to play Irish flute or the Bodhran. Long story short, the fast little skiffle-beats that Kai plays do sound, to my ears, just like what a bodhran player would be pounding out on the skin. I got a chance to sit in with them once at an late night Irish jam session, filling in for a very, heavily-basted w/Guiness'd Michael. ... and had the "honor" to sit right between the bodhran and the piper.... I think that was so they could drown out my mistakes, to be honest. But yeah, I gained a whole new respect for a true artist on that Irish drum... and Kai did a very fair job of filling in there for a few moments. Enjoy the NW.

It is a concept album about an old composer on his death bed re-visiting moments from his life. In this song he is expressing his desire to go back to his youth where he used to feel his emotions more strongly, thus he wants his tears back or to feel sadness so strongly he cries. For more Troy/Celticy songs try Last of the Wilds from Wacken (instrumental featuring Troy's Uillean pipes), Nemo from Wacken (Irish Low Whistle), Elvenjig/Elvenpath, Alpenglow, Elan, My Walden, Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere version to hear him play the Irish Low Whistle), and Harvest. One of my favorites is the acoustic version of How's the Heart from Planet Rock. Just Floor and Troy on an acoustic guitar. Also there are some fan videos of Floor and Troy doing an acoustic version of Decades in the Sun from their Human Nature tour. Very emotional song written in tribute to Nightwish's family members about being close to family even when you are not together. Best live version of the song is from Floor's 2021 solo concert in Amsterdam but no Troy in that performance. Another great way to experience Troy is in the side project he has with Tuomas and Tuomas's wife, Johanna Kurkela (popular Finnish folk/pop singer) called Auri. Very folky and atmospheric music. Very similar to the end of Perfume of the Timeless where Troy is singing. Some of my favorites are The Space Between, Desert Flower, and The Valley. On Desert Flower Troy plays an aerophone which is a breath driven digital wind instrument to create a violin like sound. Very cool. Also you will be blown away by Johanna's beautiful voice.

The costume of the GODDESS.......if I remember right ( If anyone thinks I am wrong-please correct me) it is of course handmade in Austria and they had to promise to make that style only once. Speaking of Troy singing check out the virtual concert........Marko had already left then so they splitted his singing parts between the GODDESS and Troy and changed the songs a little bit to adopt them to the missing of Markos voice...... Or "Hows is your heart" acoustic version where he sings the background voice..... Ah...and the chanting of the crowd.....its a very known chant in every football stadium in Argentina and everywhere around the world where their national-team plays........

Hehe, "he has other instruments there" - yes, about the only thing Troy Donnockley doesn't play is ice hockey :) He was collaborating with the band even before Floor joined, but he was proclaimed "permanent member" the same time Floor was - after the 2013 Wacken show... You should have seen him before, in Wembley 2015 he was allready on stage every song, like for example in While your lips are still red or 7 days to the wolfs or The greatest show on earth...

this is a rough translation of what people are singing at the start. The original is "ohhhhhh, Nighwish, es un sentimiento, no puedo parar, ole ole ola, cada día te quiero más". The translation is something like "Ohhhh, Nightwish, it's a feeling, I can't stop, ole ole ola, each day I love you more"

Troy is the guy you ask about, multi instrumentelist, and 2nd singer in Nightwish, after Marko left, back then they was actuaqlly 3 singers, now only 2. He do have a song where he is main vocal, called Harvest.. He have been a friend of band many many years, and was guest on some tracks in early day, i think he official became member around same time as Floor, being 2013..

First: Not electric particularly !!!! Troy Donockley "The Bard" and the sixth member of the band (is an English composer and multi-instrumentalist most known for his playing of Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone). Troy is playing the Uilleann (ill-en or ill-yen) pipes. The Irish version of the bagpipes which uses a bellows squeezed by the elbow to inflate the bag. Uilleann is the Gaelic word for elbow. Song: The song is a longing to feel emotions as one did when they were young. As we get older, the intensity of those emotions can wane or disappear altogether. And was written for Nightwish's second singer Anette, but of course, Floor Crushed it !!!! Crowd: OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÁ... OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ; CADA DÍA TE QUIERO MÁS...OOOHHH!!! SOY DE NIGHTWISH; ES UN SENTIMIENTO, NO PUEDO PARAR !!! (OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ OLÁ ... OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ; EVERY DAY I LOVE YOU MORE ... OOOHHH !!! I AM FROM NIGHTWISH; IT'S A FEELING, I CAN'T STOP! ). Yep, Floor looks like a Superhero, or a Warrior Queen who has landed among us. - The uilleann pipes are Troy's trademark but according to him, they are extremely hard to play. He also said that since they don't have to be blown like the more famous Scottish bagpipes, you can have a drink while playing.

Troy Donockley became a member of his parents' folk band as a teenager. He then worked in various roles and styles on the English folk scene. In 2007, Nightwish hired him as a tour player for the folk part of Nightwish music. Over time, his role grew. In 2013, he joined the band with Floor. You already heard him singing at the end of Parfum of the Timeless. In the following video, he plays the Uilleann Pipes and an E-Bouzouki with an EBow. He can also play normal flutes: NIGHTWISH - The Greatest Show on Earth (with Richard Dawkins) (OFFICIAL LIVE) The song is from the concept album / film music Imaginaerum. The main character's life is in ruins, but he is not ready to give up. In other metal bands, the backpipes are an integral part of the music: Saltatio Mortis - Pray To The Hunter feat. “The Elder Scrolls Online” (Official Video) FEUERSCHWANZ - Warriors Of The World United (feat Thomas Winkler, Saltatio Mortis & Melissa Bonny)

@@TheRealRedAce I don't know of a new wave in folk rock, nor of German bands using Scottish or Irish instruments (unless they're playing Irish or Scottish folk). Typically they use a German version of the bagpipe and their musical inspiration comes from the mainland.

I don't think those Uileann pipes are electric... miked, sure, but otherwise standard. As far as I know uileann means "armpit" in Irish gaelic, and indeed there is the pump under Troy's right armpit, pumping air into the bag Also, Troy is a "yes instrumentalist" in that his answer to "what instrument do you play?" is "yes". Uileann pipes, many kinds of flutes, recorder, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, etc... dude seemingly plays them all.
