My hometown is Negombo. We have relatives in Chillaw. We love baila, and my family is de Silvas and Moraes andCostas. My relatives play baila during weddings, and i am so happy to see this program.

The entire island consists of a group of hybridized people. Veddhas mixed with Singhalese, Tamils, Burghers, South Indians, Malayan and even some Africans. Ironically each group claims ethnic purity.

There is only one association in Sri Lanka. The Dutch Burgher Union commonly known as the DBU.

I was doing research about the Africans slaves that the Portuguese took there are they from Cape Verde ? And I’m Cape Verdean and we was colonized by the Portuguese

Glad to hear that , I’m a Sri Lankan . As I heard Cape Verde is the very first Portuguese empire. Do ur comment so great and special to me and thx at the very outset, I mostly focused the musical facts as I’m a music researcher, But interesting facts are thr , so we can share our ideas ,As I think u are using Cape Verdian Portuguese creole , Here Portuguese descendants have used creole , It is called Ceylon Portuguese creole, Ceylon was the name used to Sri lanka early . When we consider about African slaves Actually it was a trade , African slaves were sold by the arabic traders to Portuguese, Dutch and English time to time here , their main purpose was spice trade , As I searched they brought African slaves to Sri Lanka from East Africa , So it affected to born the distinctive music style called Baila Kaffrigna, ( Kaffir - IKaffir is an insulting term for black people and in our language it is called Kapiri , Baila means the dance ) and proudly say this style ( features and lyrics with Portuguese Ceylon creole ) remains only in Sri Lanka , but it’s not popular, if we compare the American African Jazz music it is widely developed and those slaves they brought from west Africa , I mean to United States , I would like to share ur ideas too .. 😊
