Bait Additives Too Expensive? Lets Test Some Cheap Supermarket Alternatives

I have a project in mind which will require some liquid bait additives, but when I checked the prices of manufactured products, I nearly fell over. I thought, there must be some cheaper alternatives out there, so I went down to my local supermarket to see what was available off the shelf.
In this episode, I am testing some of the products I bought to see if they will do the same job as those expensive products in the tackle shops.

Hello Den. This is getting to be a good habit watching your informative videos. Fishing is as expensive as you make it. Yesterday I was on a fishery that doesn't allow bread, boilies or pellets. So I covered spam with curry powder, chick peas with Chinese 5 spice & corn with sweet chilli sauce. 8 very nice common & mirror carp on the bank, lost 5 others. Alternatives I use, Dijon mustard, dessicated coconut mixed with raspberry jam, sweet chilli sauce, if they come a bit runny just add cornflour. My favourite, liquidised worms & mix in your groundbait. All the best Den🐟🪱🎣👍

My first reaction is that a fish could be afraid of a colored or tasty cloud in the water. Or even smelly bait of groundbait. Fish use water to breath and get the oxigen from. I only use a little bit of molasses solved in handwarm water to wet the groundbait. Far more important is how you use your groundbait, keep them feeding with very little amounds but all the time when needed. Presentation of your bait is also a keyfactor !

Good video mate .ive fished and caught carp and other species since 1980 and goos etc are not needed to catch its that simple ! Luncheon meat sweetcorn and bread (and boilies)were very successfully used then NO goos were ever used then,a boile fished over a bed of particle (corn nuts hemp)was a devastating method especially for the bogger fish.but carp have a very srtong sense of smell and find tiny food items no problem without goo lol ,goos glugs do have an attractive nature and aroma but their design is to make the angler buy the product its that simple and it seems to reel in lol most anglers these days who obviously dont know any different or imo have no confidence in their own fishing.

I use a pack bait made from old fashioned oats and corn syrup, mixed thoroughly and left overnight. It holds together nicely ( you can even just ball it around your hook bait, especially boilies) and it is effective. Also in Canada and the pineapple flavoured boilies seem to catch the most fish. Small bottles of pineapple flavour concentrate is availkable in Asian supermarkets

@@russelljones1718 I can give you one. Groundbait itself. At one time, all groundbait was, was just breadcrumb, either brown or white. Then came all the colours, flavours and "continental" mixes hit the shelves that smelled like they belonged in a cake tin, not to mention the vastly increased price tag, lol.😉 I grew up in Australia and started fishing there. 30 pound hand lines with hooks the size of your thumb and a big weight to hold bottom. Usually fishing shrimp for yellowbelly,( golden perch) and worms at night for catfish. I'd never heard of groundbait and it wasn't used by anyone. Then I moved to England at 17 where I first saw waggler fishing with fine lines, small hooks etc....and breadcrumb groundbait. And so I started to use it. After fishing for nearly 40 years I don't anymore and haven't for quite some time. And I catch just as many fish without it as I ever did using it. Groundbait can kill a swim dead, particularly if you want to catch multiple species from it. One may like it, where the other species don't! All I do now, is a full pouch of maggots on arrival, then take my time tackling up. After selecting my float etc....I plumb the depth, stick a maggot or two on the hook and then it's 10-20 maggots loose fed around the float and I usually get my first bite, (small roach, rudd, perch or skimmer bream) within the first five to ten seconds. Then it's little and often as the session continues. After a while the bigger fish will move in,(tench, proper bream and big roach, rudd and perch). I guarantee you groundbait of any kind would have deterred a couple of those species from feeding, thus reducing the catch rate. Basic food items,(maggots, worms etc..) end up in the water all the time in nature, where as clouds of breadcrumbs with flavourings, colours etc....do not. I'll never use groundbait or "flavourings" again.

@@russelljones1718 One example. Boilies to me are to catch the fishermen, Although they do catch fish .I have fished next to anglers using boilies which I was using luncheon meat with supermarket additives and I happened to catch more fish ,on more than one occasion. @@FishingwithDen, coconut milk is good too, a lot of the pre made Chinese sauces are very good, hoisin and garlic, spicy black bean sauce, tom yum sauce etc, Thai fish sauce, sriracha sauce, a mate of mine used to lightly coat his dog mixer’s with supermarket hemp oil, I’ve also used desiccated coconut in seed mixtures for spod mixes, as I was using coconut and tiger nut meal boilies, also powdered soup mixes too for a savory powder, ice cream syrups which are often fructose based so great fruit sugars etc 👍 But for hookbait glugs especially fruit hookbaits like brite pop up’s or plastic/rubber corn and maize then the double strength fruit juice I mentioned on previous post has done me the best results, probably because MOST of the glugs specifically made for angling are aroma( smell based ) and the fruit squash is both taste and smell appealing.

I have not used water to soak my micro pellets for years. I use another very cheap liquid from the local supermarket. It makes the pellets slightly tacky, so I never need to buy sticky pellets, and it dissolves in water very quickly. It has a very sweet taste, but with a crucial ingredient that makes Carp feed more aggressively. I am surprised that I am the only one to have thought of it. I have done very well with it over the years. I think if I ever let on, fisheries would ban it.

You have the right idea using some syrup to increase the density and stickiness. While I wouldn't eat it myself, a blend of 2 parts syrup with 1 part marmite/vegemite, or soya sauce, shrimp paste, MSG (found in Asian shops), yeast flakes. Fish are strongly attracted to umami flavours which all the later ingredients have. MSG is an amino acid, and is pure umami flavour, and I've used it for decades. It's a powder and probably around 10% will dissolve in syrups, so the ratio should be 10 parts syrup to 1 part MSG.

I got 20L of molasses about 10 years ago and i've got about 10L. I use molasses and curry powder them pump a handful of pellets and fill the small pot with the mixture, and the pellets last way over 6 months as i used that pot for that long, I think there's that little water in the pumped pellets, the molasses/curry powder mix infuses every air pocket in the pellets and acts as a preservative. The expander stop expanding as well once you pop the lid on the filled up container. It's brilliant for Carp and Bream what i like to target, but also catches everything else apart from perch.

Hi Den, the only one of those I would use is the strawbwerry one. We get it in the UK (I buy it at Aldi) but it's a thicker and more syrupy texture than the one you get over there. There are also flavourings made by bait companies such as Dynamite that you can't buy at the supermarket. they do Scopex, Tutti Frutti, Green Betaine. These are not too expensive, £4:50 for a 250 ml bottle. They last a while as you don't need to add much to your groundball/pellets etc.

@@FishingwithDen That's a shame. I've found that the Scopex in particular is a very good fish attractant. A bottle last a long time as you only need a couple of squirts in your pellets/groundbait. Great video, Den I really like your testing process with the goo/glug falling off the floating foam. In my experience, golden syrup is an excellent additve for sweetcorn and similar baits. It takes colour well and seems to sink to the bottom of the water column then spreads out. Mostly I use it with liquidized sweetcorn or chopped sweetcorn. Red and green colouration seem to have been most effective. You can also odd various complementary flavours. The sugary coffee flavours from supermarkets seem to work well and are worth experimenting with. Vanilla and salted caramel both seem to work. Vimto cordial is also an interesting alternative to tutti fuity but probably not available in Australia. I keep thinking about trying chilli flakes infused into golden syrup for the winter. Sweet and sour must be worth a try..... Slightly off topic but have you looked at some of the American style pack bait recipes on KZfaq. There's a few using something similar to golden syrup ( often warmed up) with breadcrumbs or similar which apparently don't go off quickly but break down rapidly in water. I'm guessing they would work well on a method feeder. Food for thought 🤔 and potentially ideal for quick impromptu sessions. Looking forward to the next instalment

Used to have to drive miles for a decent carp lake , now can't get get away from them , would rather catch decent roach , tench and perch now. Every thing seems to be about carp , looking though ads on Ebay , carp bank sticks . Lol. As if a carp cares what bank sticks you are using , Camo everything including reels , bags etc , fish have poor eyesight and rely on smell above everything so this is all marketing bull. I'm not going to be conned by all this , approach and bait presentation is what matters. Yes amongst my new kit I do have a carp rod ( second hand ) and bait runner reel in case the need arises but the first buys were a quality float rod and a quiver tip one. Have bought the usual tackle requirements and made about 20 various floats. I just hope I can get back to enjoying fishing as I use to , defo gonna try the molasses idea , not tried that before. Thanks again.

If you don’t know anything about bait and why it is attractive to fish this appears to have meaning. If you do it doesn’t. Sure there are things in the super market that carp are attracted to too one degree or another but when you use products from the leading bait company’s such as those used in this example, what you are buying is confidence in a bottle.

Scent’s definitely draw in other species here (turtles and catfish mostly). Been trying to figure what to use in my packbait/ Pva bag mix to help draw them to my bait. I live in the states and love your channel. Thanks for all the insight!

At the time I did this video I had only given it a very quick try, but I will be doing a full video on fishing with it in the next couple of weeks.

Its all designed to catch the anglers wallet , a 2 litre bag of groundbait over here in the UK is £10 its outrageous , so i have decided to use an alternative , its layers mash , i use a coffee grinder to fine it down and add any supermarket powdered flavour to it or cheap custard cream and bourbon biscuits ground down , a 20k sack of layers mash is £9.70 from my local animal feed merchants called Vaux Brothers , the layers mash just looks like Van Den Eynde groundbait

Hi Andy. I agree groundbaits and additives are very expensive, but at least you have the opportunity to buy them in the UK. 🤣 Down here we have to make our own, so my groundbait also uses the ingredients you mentioned. The only difference is that instead of buying Layers Mash, I buy Chicken Layer Pellets. It's the same stuff, just in a different form). I too use a coffee grinder to turn them into a fine mix. The only other thing I do is add equal parts of white breadcrumbs from the Supermarket to get a very versatile groundbait mix. I have produced a couple of videos on the subject. You don't need any of them. A piece of corn or a pellet in the right place is all you need.

For the most part, I agree with you George. As you say, if you put your bait where the fish are, you have a chance to catch them. Please watch this weeks video on the new Flavour Feeder though. Here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLqcecefut2vY58.html What I am experimenting with by using this new feeder, is an attempt to bring the fish into a more concentrated area using a smell and a flavour, but not actually feeding them. It is designed for use in Winter when the fish are eating very little.
