Love watching your videos buddy and watching your reviews and seeing what other people think on the matter….. I personally never use a lure more that about 20g and mostly under 10g…. Spinning reel and ultra light spinning rod for me but would like to try a BFS set up but as you say it takes time to get use to the set up … one day maybe but for now i stick to what I can comfortably use ….. look forward to your next vid buddy and all the best to you and yours 👍🏽🎣😀

Good summary, thanks. After 40+ years using spinning reels (fixed spool in UK terms), we moved to a different US lake that has a lot of pike and some muskies. I tried throwing big musky lures on spinning gear and wore my forearms out in just a few casts. So last year, I got some baitcasting gear for muskies, 80 lb braid, etc., and now those big lures are super easy and super fun. I would use a baitcaster for everything, except they don't excel at light lures (especially balsa lures like Rapalas, especially in windy conditions). So now I use spinning (fixed spool) for walleye (zander) fishing lures 3/4 ounce and lighter, and I use big musky baitcasters for pike and musky lures 1 ounce and bigger. Love baitcasters more, but they suck for light lures that are hard to cast.

Was fixed spool only for years to the extent that I bought an ET Mauler which at that time was about the only fixed spool rod able to throw 80 odd grams Only bought a multiplier/baitcaster when I won a jerkbait rod First attempts landed about 2 ft from my feet !! Having got used to one I now love them as you say for the control The fun starts when you get brave and back off the brakes and rely one your thumb

good summary. I'd like to see examples of you casting long distances with both, or trying accurate casts with both over shorter distances, with different weight lures.

I'm a fixed spool guy😅cast further, cheaper, I still chuck up to 150g and it doesn't hurt my fingers, more finesse and I find baitcasters are made very ridged and tend to get the fish in really fast. I prefer a longer fight

Your beter getting the fish in quickly as not to exaust it, thus giving it a better chance to recuperate using either type of reel especially in the summer when the oxygen levels in the water are depleted. But its personal choice. I use fix spools for my light fishing because i find it easier to quickly adjust the drag if i hook into anything bigger than expected and baitcaster for anything bigger.

eh I get you but fishing jerkbaits with a spinning combo kinda sucks, plus if you throw lures that send off a lot of vibration they'll wreck your reel up real bad

@@Kajteliborackuuu1213 I find jerkbaits easy to use on spinning rods, I just point the rod towards the bait and work it through the reel

Having bought a _'fixed spool'_ set up for lighter lures so i could catch some perch after using nothing but a baitcaster for a year for pike. I can truly say it took me a while to really get the hang of using a fixed spool again as i hadnt used one for maybe some 10-15 years (I used to be a big carp angler but then retired due to work and life commitments) Its all to do with the way the baitcaster casts and the way the setup feels in the hand that makes it superior due to comfort and feeling far more _'natural'_ to use. When using the fixed spool setup. I really miss the ability to control the casting distance with my thumb. Constantly flipping the bail arm open and closed for casting can also eventually get quite annoying lol. :EDIT: I also REALLY REALLY like the scream that the baitcaster makes when you throw a big lure. That is music to my ears lol. That is another thing i miss about baitcasters.

My opinion Baitcaster VS Fixedspool Baitcasters need more maintenance if you don't they will break faster. You can adjust the drag better on a fixedspool than and baitcaster. I have baitcasters and fixedspools for fishing for pike and perch.

Jim - same here. If you asked me to invent a birds nest machine I’d come up with a bait caster. Used one rock fishing in a high side wind and it was ok after lots of practice. Tried it pike fishing, fourth cast my thumb slipped - huge birds nest. Expecting some kind of disaster I’d brought my trusty fixed spool along. It doesn’t happen often but if I’m chucking big lures with a 150g rod I can switch to a 5g soft plastic if I think there might be perch about. Can’t see how you’d do that with a baitcaster.

Cadence cb5 baitcaster is $40 and a DSG jawbone rod is $20. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a nice baitcasting setup. Kastking also makes inexpensive baitcasters and rods that are great.

how about borderline-bigbait pike lurefishing setup all-rounder? I want to throw a 30-100g jerks for pike. I'm thinking ~0.22-0.27mm braid ~20kg test. Had one shitty baitcasting reel that sucked ass once and hate to think investing multiple hundreds in a reel considering wages here in eastern europe. 200$ reel for you is relativelty 5x as much for me.

I love a BC reel because of its accuracy and how you can stop the bait in flite which I know you can do with a spinning reel but the baitcasters are just more fun until you get a backlash🤦🏼‍♂️🤯😢. Also you can do different styles of casting easier with a BC reel like flipping and pitching and skipping which is absolutely a brilliant laugh when you get the technique down. I do still use spinning reels for my finesse fishing, it just comes down to personal preference, i like to have multiple of both reels, I prefer to have the best of both worlds I like my cake and to eat it.

You forgot to mention the birds nests you can create with the baitcasters in windy conditions. Thankfully I don't get as many as i used too, also fixed spool is easier to fix if anything goes wrong. Use wd40 on both reels especially if you've been out in the rain.
@AlexSmith-dz5gg

Do you strip your reels down after using wd40 & re oil and lubricate them? Obviously wd40 is great for cleaning all the shit out but also cleans out and removes all the oils and lubricants

If you have a slight tangle on your reel you will crack off when you cast next. Get in the habit of just glancing at your reel before you start reeling in to check you don't have even a slight overrun. Hope that helps 👍

Use 30lb braid minimum. Use uni knots or stronger. Glance down at your spool between casts. You will be getting backlashes without even realising, then sending your lure flying to the moon when it snags up.
