Franklin's Wolves had been gone for 10 days upon my arrival to his camp... Funny how we just finish baiting a couple hundred pounds of scrap meat & realize they had arrived back.
Mating season is among us & as the month of February gets on its way, the breeding will only get more & more prevalent meaning the Wolves will be more responsive to howling, but potentially could be roaming a lot more than usual.
In the end of the day, they always know where "Franklin's Restaurant" is...

Thats the plan brother!!!! He has clients booked for February/March & the Wolves will be laying out on the ice like they do every year sunbathing with full bellies come March (Warm weather & prime breeding season).

Nice to have a mentor like Franklin a jack of all things in the bush. Joel you have to be a sponge when Franklin has something to say, there is always a tidbit of knowledge. I thought he was going to bust a gut when the phone got hit with the wipers.

He is a wealth of knowledge & you're right, I need to open my ears more & ask more questions, because that value is sought by not only myself but you guys as well as viewers. Him & I wake up at 6:00AM every morning, have tea & chat until 9:00AM then go touch up all the bait sites, etc... So we are always chatting a lot behind the scenes, what you see is just minuscule to our insane adventures but sometimes its required to just toss the camera in my pocket & leave it turned off, you know? Come Spring we have a series of videos planned surrounding Franklin, his guiding & his stories... Just you wait... You will love it!

@@PatterningNature That will be pure knowledge and entertaining for sure. Will be waiting for that to come out. I'm sure you could write a book on the morning chats, "My adventures with Franklin" by Joel.

Love that idea of freezing it all together, the warm Temps we are having this year down here right now I don't think it would work but on a normal winter I'm gonna have to give that a go. I'm scared of being out on the ice but on a good cold winter I think I could get over that

Prior I've jammed a bunch of scraps into a tupperware tote, the large ones you move houses with, then filled that with water & left it to freeze in -20 or -30... Then you have to blow torch the bottom so it releases Hahaha Things weighed 100 pounds I swore... and it was neat to see a giant pile of frozen bloody meat scraps LOL Amen to that brother... the warm temps have been silly as of late... Our ice is still over 20 inches thick but still, I believe it will be an early Spring but you never know!

That's awesome! You and Franklin make quite the pair. That bait pile should keep them coming back for sure. Seeing that squirrel reminded me of bear hunting and I always had little critters come check out the bait. Then they'd run up the tree's and eventually spot me from a branch and slowly come check me out. Such taddle-tails to alert everything else of your presence.

LOL!!! I know exactly what you mean... Funny enough, my last Deer hunt a Squirrel taddle-tailed on a huge Buck coming in from behind me. I had no clue until the Squirrel started to squeek like a maniac at the Buck. I salute to you, Mr. Squirrel... you finally helped me for once & did not give my location away LOL!!!

@@PatterningNature I haven't in the last two years but as I took some regular pork sausage out of my freezer last night, I was wishing they were bear sausage which is very delicious. So seeing I have a little bit of bait around and know where I can probably get more, I'm hoping to do a Spring bear hunt. I used to hunt them in the Fall cause I'd never seem to get a moose tag but now with the Spring bear hunt back, why not get back into it and hunt them this Spring. Baiting for bears is the hardest part. Almost worth going through a lodge or guide for that reason alone. But it is satisfying knowing you did all the work involved in hunting that bear and know every time you eat that meat, the entire experience comes back to you.
@PatterningNature

Amen to that... If you enjoy it & have passion, the hard work seems easy! I'm happy that the Spring Bear hunt is back. I'd much rather eat a Spring Bear than a Fall Bear, but then again the Fall Bears are MUCH bigger LOL Also Fall Bears have great fat you can use for all sorts of things!!!@@darrendavidsonoutdoors

LOL I wish I would have stayed an extra day or two but I had to get back to work. It was +6 today & Franklin was forced to toss a lot of his bait out onto his bait sites... I can only imagine the giant size of the bait piles now... legit probably 4x the size of this one now! And 100% dude, those little water pumps are SO useful - Not only for gathering water for your off-grid home/cabin, but for baiting too ;-)

Find your video really interesting, I’m from manitoba , but have a place near kenora , started hunting wolves in February , I’m using whole pigs , that are from the barn
@PatterningNature
@PatterningNature 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for the love!!!! Pigs work wonderfully - My buddy Sean Snider from Alberta Racks n' Tracks outfitting using pork as well. The best is allowing it to go a bit rancid before placing it outside on the bait pile in the dead of winter - Any good rotten smell will bring the Wolves in more than freshly killed Pig or something that's been frozen (Freezer burnt, etc...) How has your Wolf hunting adventure been going so far!?!?!?

Friggin RIGHT ON!!!!!!! I love the ice hole freezing method, I suggest that to anyone starting out. I have toyed with multiple ways to keep them on the bait, one that worked great was bait tossed into a large tupperware bin, then fill it with water & let it sit outside for 2-3 days depending on the temps so it freezes. Downfall... the "bait-sicles" are HEAVYYYY & you need to use a torch on the bottom to release the tupperware bin from the bait-sicle. Congrats on the Wolf, and hopefully you smack another here shortly!@@MsMe1020
@PatterningNature

No way, I didn't know that! Yeah Ontario it seems like you can bait with anything... Fish, red meat, pork, entire moose or deer (road kill), etc...@@MsMe1020

Curious what dumping water on the bait does?
@PatterningNature
@PatterningNature 6 ай бұрын
An old trick I use to use that I learned from Franklin was to cut a metal barrel in half, then toss all your meat in the barrel & fill it with water so it can freeze solid in -20 or -30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit). Then you flip the barrel & heat up the bottom with a torch so it can release the ice from the metal barrel, leaving you with a "bait-sicle" LOL That way Ravens, Fox & even the Wolves cannot pull apart of the bait & drag small pieces off into the bush. Franklin's "water pump" technique is just another variation of the above, except the water acts like the "glue" for the bait pile, keeping it all together & solid. All in all... The bait being frozen together helps keep the Wolves on the bait longer, giving hunters more time to shoot & ensure the shot is ethical & lethal. I've had Wolves drag 100LB bait-sicles 65 yards up-hill trying to get it into the bush so they can lay down & lick/chew at a corner... They're SO strong!
