BAK Industries Roll-X Tonneau Cover & AMP Research Bed Extender - compatibility fix

Originally, the BAK Industries Roll-X Tonneau cover would not allow the use of the AMP Research bed extender. BAK fixed this with easily installed retrofit parts. This video shows the old parts, the new parts and how well it works together now.

Awesome video....There is Always a way to make something work! I don't drive a ram, I have an 06 Silverado and have been really diggin Bak covers. Right now I'm in between the revolver x2 and the newest BakFlip ( Matte finish and new tailgate seal) which is not out just yet....Issue I was having was cargo management....I have been researching what kind of system could be installed in combo with a Bak cover that would work....This is a very ideal setup! I'm now hoping I can fit the amp bed extender on my truck in combination with one of the 2 Bak covers and maybe a Bak box! Thanks for being creative!

Their solution was an elimination of original parts. I needed new ones because mine had an individual issue.

Hi Duane . . . I am in the same boat with my extender . . . but my latches only seem to swing up to about 45 degrees, whereas yours look like they are much closer to 90 degrees . . . which provides the clearance. I have the newer X2 with latches that look like yours, but somehow I am not getting the same clearance . . . what am I missing . . .. ugh.

I'm curious. How secure is the cover with the cable. I've been told it's easy to unlock it with a hanger.

@David The company is great to deal with too. Call them up and tell them what you need to accomplish. There's a good chance they'll have useful ideas. 😉

I am looking at getting the amp bed extender and I have the same bed cover and have the same part that you replaced, but mine doesnt sit straight up like yours does in the video. Looking to get that same bed extender but that part is holding me back.

Keep in mind that the one in this video is now about 5 years old. Very good chance parts have been updated or changed on more recent models.

the distance you needed from the bed liner track system to the point of where the extender will flip to the inside of the bed. the whole reason why they sent you the adapter piece. I installed a truxedo cover with inside the bed track so want to know if I have enough clearance give or take of course depending upon truck.

Ah, I see. I don't know the exact measure, but I can say that the manufacturer will know if the two items will work together. Honestly, I have no idea why they sent me the pieces they sent. I simply removed the one item that was blocking me and everything continues to work fine without it. I'm going to recommending checking with Truxedo - simply because their design will be different than mine so any measurements I take won't be applicable to your design. AMP may also have information about which bed covers the extenders work with.

Could you not have just trimmed the bolt with the wing nun?

The whole piece is one unit, with the bolt press fit into place, and it was the tang, not the bolt, that was blocking the tailgate extender. I had considered grabbing the Dremel first time I looked at it, but it simply wasn't the best option. Today, however, its not an issue as the parts have all been updated on the newer models. 😉

Hey Duane. I ordered a a bed extender max HD and was wondering if a spacer kit is needed for it to work with the roll-x tonneau cover. I have the exact same truck as you do. The bed extended I got is the one that's more rectangular one (max vs sport). I've reached out to amp research twice and got both a yes and no so I figured I would reach out to someone that has had a chance to use the product. thanks in advance!

I've only used the one I have, not the Max model, so I can't state from experience whether it'll work. But...I recall the issue being the sides, not the outer corners of the extender, and if that's the case, then the Max should work, all else being equal. And i don't think the spacer kit will be needed and I seem to recall they made that a running fix in tonneau cover production. The interference i experienced was on the sides of the bed extender, which is why i think the Max should work. ;)

what the clearance distance needed for the bed extender?

James Bairos Clearance for what James? From and to where? The bed extender was ordered to match the truck make/model/bed size. The bed cover the same. They both fit and work well together. If you're asking about the space between the extender and the cover when the cover is down and the extender tucked under it, it's less than an inch between the highest point of the extender and the cover's underside. They don't touch and have been on my truck for thousands of miles now. If it's another clearance you're thinking of, let me know and I'll try to answer.

Mine has some low volume squeaks, but everything with multiple parts will make some level of noise.

How has the roll-x done in rainy weather? any leaks?

+ryan brackeen It's a myth that ANY tonneau cover will keep out all water. So asking if it leaks is a bit of a loaded question. Does water penetrate the actual cover itself? Nope. Does water still end up inside the bed at times? Yup. But again, no cover is designed to form a waterproof seal, so depending on a number of factors, both when stationary or when moving, you could end up with water in the bed.Now, has anything I'm placed in my bed ever gotten wet? Nope. Which is to say when water does make it's way in, there is very little.Would I buy this cover again? Without question. :)

Sorry Darren, I do not. it's been a couple years now since I sorted the issue. In fact, I'd be surprised if the issue still exists today, as I thought they made a running fix to eliminate the problem, and it was only those of us at the time who faced the issue. Best bet would be to call BAK's customer support folks and talk through it with them, or maybe email them. My experiences with them via email were tops, and I think you'll reach different people on the phone v. email. ;)

It does exist. I have the newer Revolver X2 and just tried to install and OEM Mopar ( AMP builds for Mopar I think ) and it hits the lever. The issue is the lever is more on a 45 and not a 90 when it's unlocked. Your video shows the replacement part being at more of a 90 to clear.

I called them the other day, and they are saying that their isn't a bed-extender that is compatible with their rolling cover. I guess they have not watched your video.

In fairness, this video is now 6 years old, so there could be a design change that’s happened along the way. Or, more likely, they can’t say because they haven’t tested it themselves and don’t know first hand. If they told the general public something based on a 3rd party KZfaq video, and it was wrong, they could be liable and would likely get some bad press. Saying they don’t know is just a safer path.

@@DuaneForrester Just installed a BAK Revolver X4 .. the problem STILL EXISTS. The lever actuators stick out and interfer with most flip style bed extenders.

@@DuaneForrester the X4s actuators look about as long as yours, but stick out closer to 45deg angle, hitting the flip bed extender. Where as yours look like they are angled much more upward, creating clearance for the flip extender. Think the only solution is spacers to bring the flip extender in about 3/4" on each side. AMP sells such a spacer kit 74609-01A .. but wants $60 for it, lol .. I'll make some.

So that’s the “angle”. They know the problem exists but let you buy a solution. I’m never a fan of that approach, but understand why companies do it.

I just called Bak industry and they denied any involvement in the modified part or parts for the bed extender

That's disappointing. I reached out to the guy who helped me at BAK to see if he can be of any help here. I'll drop a note if he responds. It's been a couple years, so he may not even be there anymore...
