Wondering how to start a bakery and be your own boss? If you love baking and have an entrepreneurial spirit, you’ve likely considered opening a bakery. But you probably have questions, too, like whether you have the skills you need or if a bakery is a profitable business.
Watch Part 2: • Bakery Business Rakes ...
In this interview with the owner of Wild Wheat Bakery, we’ll answer all of those questions and more! He’ll share his advice on how to start a bakery, including what equipment you need to start a bakery and how to set goals that lead to greater business success.
Wild Wheat’s owner started off in the corporate sector with a background in computer science before pivoting to become an entrepreneur. Wild Wheat Bakery is the latest of 4 business ventures he’s undertaken since becoming his own boss.
After buying the bakery in 2019, he quickly grew the business’ revenue to over $1 million. His life story is living proof that anyone can open a bakery business with the right knowledge.
One secret to the bakery’s success has been its diversity of income streams. Along with consumer sales of bread and baked goods, they run a restaurant and café and sell wholesale to other local businesses. This range of offerings is a big reason they’ve been able to maintain their success even through unforeseen hardships.
If you’ve learned something helpful from watching this interview, we’d love to hear about it! Like our video or drop a line in the comments, and don’t forget to subscribe to our channel so you’ll know when we post more beneficial business content.

@@UpFlip not the same though. The man in this video didnt build the business and with that cary the risks of starting a bakery business. Plus in many moments you talk about “starting a bakery business”. This video is not about starting a bakery business. Its about buying an already running business. Also the guy in your video cares about how to make huge profit in the best way, he doesn’t care about baking clearly.

I own a 20+ unit pizza chain. In 2022, one of our long-time employees, Gordon, explained that he was working on a sourdough and asked if I would support him in getting his bread to the local Farmer’s Market. He needed use of my dough plant/equipment (and importantly, our Board of Health permitting). I offered use of our dough plant and a little expertise and voila, Gordon’s in business. He’s been at it for over a year and makes good money. It’s a lot of work-don’t be fooled-but he bakes 80-100 loaves each Friday and sells out at two Farmers’ Markets in neighboring towns every week, for $8/loaf. That’s a great side hustle; it’s actually awesome. Lessons 1: Gordon loves baking bread and he put in the time to study & hone his craft; Gordon’s sourdough is the best I’ve ever tasted. Lesson 2: He offers variety, San Fran, German Rye, Whole Grain to keep his Customers hungry for his product. and he’s got the stamina to do so (he’s 65 yrs old) to do so week after week. He loves what he does. Lesson 3: He started small, almost no capital outlay (>$2,000) and he’s immediately profitable. As our Baker above explained, the cost of sourdough raw ingredients is 15% of the retail price of his product. THAT leaves a lot of profit. BUT it’s a lot of his labor, it’s a 8-12 hour day of mixing, proofing, baking. Then he drives around, sets-up his tent and sells-out (typically in > 2 hrs). THINK about what you love, what ‘you can bring to the table’ and think ‘outside the box’ on ways to produce and get it to your Customers efficiently. Good luck!

Things started to change about 1 year down in the future. The family had some social problems and the business started to fall apart. I heard that some of the family members would just eat at the restaurant and not help out. My mom told me she felt this was not right and it was affecting the business. Within 1 1/2 years the business went into bankruptcy from poor management.

a full bakery set up you can get to start with for 15000. depending of course like he said how big your bakery is. but for a smaller bakery to start with 15000 for second hand or third hand equipment and 1500 for ingredients is enough. industrial bakery ovens are extremely expensive like cars because they are heavy heavy heavy duty ovens and you can still use them in 100 years. im happy for him, nothing makes you more awake in the morning than knowing you're waking up to do what u love. but getting bread customers for wholesale is not as easy as it sounds when he talks about it. bread is a food basic and most shops are already selling bread, which means they already have a supplier. so its not easy to convince a shop to let a supplier go who probably delivered and supplied them bread for many years and to take now bread from u.

Nice video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ the store owner didn’t hold back on info at all 👍 here in California you can’t get that info from anyone 😡 one time I asked an auto dealer how I could be a dealer he told me it was very expensive and that I would need $50,000 cash for the bond which isn’t true at all California requires you to have a $50,000 surety bond which covers the consumer if the dealer screws them and can’t transfer the car into the customers name that bond is based on your credit it can be as low as $700 per year so if you have a spot for the license the hole thing can cost under$2000 for everything once I found out all of this I never helped him again I don’t even want to see him ever again for being a snake 🐍

1,000,000 gross revenue with six figure monthly staff cost. Is this a loss making business?

So if his monthly expenses are in the six figures that’s a minimum of 100,000 every month (1.2M a year). Then he goes on to say that his gross profit are just over 1 million. It doesn’t make sense, If that was true then his gross profit would not cover his yearly expenses. Or am I missing something?

Analyst: that's the operative word, not a bakery. Don't be fooled. This has Nothing to do with bakeries, but everything has to do with crunching numbers and a good pr firm. Save your money.

I love your videos, but I think it’s kind of awkward when you start talking good about a business person from a previous video. Sometimes I think the host at first thinks you are talking about them.

The great bakers want a wonderful product not just a great cash flow! This guy only cares about $$$$$$$$$$$ and the quality of what he’s selling is second to his bottom line. Sad.

Owning a bakery in this economy is hard, cost of ingredients keeps going up,gotta factor in all the expenses and at the end of the month, looks like just breaking even ... waiting out til the end of the lease to sell...rent is too high ...but I do love baking!
