BAKFlip F1 Bed Cover Restoration and Seal Replacement

More work on the Tuxedo Black Raptor today, this time restoration of the BakFlip bed cover that came on the truck when I purchased it. This is a super nice bed cover, but needed some TLC since the seals were worn, parts were broken/missing, etc. Thankfully, the manufacturer sells spare parts for most/all of the items you’d need that wear out over time. Hope you all enjoy the in depth process!

Wow you took your time. Great job. FYI, the way to close this up is to open the cover, then close the tailgate, then push with your palm on each side where it clips into the rails. No pounding or forcing is needed. By closing the tailgate with the lid closed you will wear out the seal and have to replace it sooner. It needs replacing about every 2 years or so.

Nice video. Do you know if it’s possible to repair/replace the center seals of the cover (where the cover bends)? Some of mine are starting to crack down the center and couldn’t seem to find much on the topic.

Side note for Jeep Gladiator owners: The Mopar tri-fold tonneau cover is the exact same as this BakFlip cover. Parts are interchangeable.

Are the flap seals just tailgate gap cover seals (4.25" width) that have been cut down the middle to separate into two long strips?

By flap seals, are you referring to the ones at front and rear of the cover? Those came together and split down the middle, if so. Thanks for watching!

I can't seem to find where they sell that roll of side seal. By chance do you have a link or part # or something to help out?

I am wondering what the process was for getting the side seals slid into that channel? Was it tough to do? And then did you just remove the backing for the adhesive after the side seal was slid into place in those channels? Thanks!

I just slid them into place, ensured everything was aligned well and no stretch/tension on the seals, and then cleaned, primed, pulled tape, and stuck them in place. Thanks for watching!

Seems like the parts are harder to come by than they were a few months ago. Trying to find the rubber for the side rails. @@redonKiLaus

@@redonKiLaus I wish it were that easy for me. I've tried to get them to slide in for more than an hour. It looks like it should be simple, but it's just not working for me. So it should slide in right? I thought maybe there was a way to "Press" it on from the sides and that the pressure might make the T-channel just pop in, but that doesn't seem to work either. Thanks.

@@jeffreyEsoteric It should, only place mine got caught up in the slightest was at each joint but I just needed to guide it through and then once past that, pulled along further no problem.

@@redonKiLaus Thanks for your response. Your video is really great and very helpful. It was just that one piece that I was missing and not sure if I was doing it right because it felt way harder than it should have been. I got it all handled, but it wasn't easy for me. Once I was sure that feeding the seal through the channel was the only way then I preceded to get it done. I cleared out the channels with a makeshift wire scraper, then I greased the channels and the t-channel part of the seal, then guided it through. I had one side all the way through and the other end popped out. I finally had to get my wife to stand at the end and help guide it through while I pulled it through each individual joint, sometimes using a pair of pliers for a better grip on the seal. I did video it and may edit that and put it up in case it's helpful. I know this should be super easy to do, but when it's not, it's not.

Hey i have the same cover and need to replace the seals that join the panels together.. when you took the side rail seals, did it look like it would be possible to remove the joint seals?

@@justsomeguy4319 They appear removable, but at the time of filming, BakFlip did not offer them as replacements and recommended purchasing a new cover. That's the only part other than the panels themselves that they don't offer.

@@justsomeguy4319 All of these covers will fail with weather exposure, so if you aren't garaging your truck and know it'll wear out, I'd go a less expensive route than one of these.

Do you have a part number or a link to the seals in between the panels? Mine split in half.

Unfortunately not, those were not available when I rebuilt my cover and from what I understand no BakFlip replacement parts are available anymore for the most part. Thanks for watching!

I need to replace the joint rubber that connects the cover panels. Can't see to find anything about replacing these.

The hinge rubber that join the panels is not a (replaceable part) According to Bak Industrys if those crack out you've reached the life expectancy of the cover. Absolute ripoff! My friend had a damaged cover & gave me the rubber hinges off his, they are easily changed out. Just a way to force you into buying another cover at $1200.

@@redonKiLaus did you use anything special to clean and revive the shine and or also protect against UV rays? I have one on a 12 Silverado and was going to use VRP from chem guys but realized it was fiberglass so wanted to get some ideas before spending some money on fiberglass protectants 😂😆

@@eddiegonzalez9924 I used the 303 Aerospace Protectant on pretty much the entire cover - good to go on the rubber parts and gel coat on the fiberglass. Works great for UV protection and restoration.
