It's a Birthday Cake Video! I had so much fun baking this birthday cake for my and Laci's birthdays! It may be the weird vintage recipe that has surprised me the most lately. What is your favorite surprising old recipe?

Tomato Cake Soup Recipe Used:
1 tbsp lard
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp soda
2 cups flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup sugar
1 can Campbell's Tomato Soup
1 cup raisins
1/2 tsp cloves
Cream sugar and lard and butter in a bowl; add soup with soda dissolved in it. Sift in flour, and add spices and raisins. Mix thoroughly and bake one hour.
Recipe alteration suggestions from me!
-- bake at 350 for 45 minutes and check
-- add oil and eggs for a less dense and dry cake
-- chop your raisins
-- add nuts of your choice if desired

I love this cake, I top mine with powder sugar. Plus I use golden raisins or just leave them out, and some use walnut and I use pecan.

Haha I was ALSO dubious about this cake and then I tasted it. My kids ate almost all of it, so I think I'll make it again. Maybe with some oil and eggs so it's a bit less thick.

Ill have to get a copy of my sister's "yummy carrot cake" to you, to try. My sister made it years ago, my mom loved it & got the recipe from her and continues to keep it and make it for all the grandkids. My sister ironically doesn't make it and even doesnt remember making it. I do remember the first one. But she is a baker and baked so many wedding cakes plus the holiday usuals, that she lost sight of how incredibly delicious it is. My kids were in disbelief When they had some at gma's recently, and thought we were lying when we told them it was carrot cake.

Happy birthday! I was born in the late 50's. This is fun! I believe the tomato cake is the original "Red velvet cake. I admire the fashions of this era aswell as the 60's. The feminine White gloves and long skirts of the 50's. 😊

If you wan the condensed milk to soak up you need to poke holes in the top. Otherwise it runs off the side like it did with you. FYI kids love this part. I give them the wooden skewers to poke hope in. It's way easier than frosting, & out don't have to clean up all of the frosting stuff.

I might have to try this; it'll give me a chance to use up those cans of tomato soup that mysteriously appeared in my pantry (seriously, I have NO IDEA where they came from as neither I nor my husband like tomato soup. I suspect the cat got them just to mess with us). I think I would ditch the raisins though. Bleh. I hope you have / had a great birthday! Yes do try and tell me what you think! I would add a bit more liquid, maybe eggs or dairy or something because it's SO DENSE... or just be really careful not to over cook it. But honestly, 10/10 would make again.

'On the fence about carrot cake'. I agree with you, I find they are ALWAYS either to dry AND underspiced, or to sweet (usually far to sweet) AND over spiced. There doesn't seem to be a happy middle ground. If someone has the fix for this please share it.

Ugh, too sweet carrot cake is the WORST. I think this is a good alternative, it just needs eggs and oil to make it less dense. But overall, very moist and spiced just perfect!

I’ve made this. It smelled great and the taste was pretty good too, didn’t really notice the soup surprisingly. The issue I had was with the texture. I thought I messed it up but after seeing your video maybe it is just how it is? Mine turned out really dense and tough almost. I probably wouldn’t make ever again. I would if I knew how to change it to make it lighter and fluffier.

I feel like it just needs more liquid. I think when I make it again, maybe I'll try adding eggs, or milk, or more butter. Because it really was such a dense cake!

@@WithLoveKristina cross reference with a carrot cake recipe, see what it's missing! Carrot cake usually has a nice crumb to it. Flour bakery has a great recipe.

Next time use the bottom end of a wooden spoon and make holes to,drizzle the condensed milk in. That way it won't run everywhere.

That’s a very English looking batter. Not uncommon to be so dense. My late great aunt worked in the Campbells soup factory here and I have a sneaking suspicion this may have been fed to me as a child.
