Baking greensand, a different way to find fossil shark teeth

Mamlambo Fossils

Mamlambo Fossils

3 жыл бұрын

Earlier in the year, I was out looking for shark teeth in a Miocene greensand layer. I didn't find any shark teeth on the day, but found an area where someone had dug out a section of the cliff. I picked up as many pieces as I could and brought them home with me.
The greensand gets its green colour from the glauconite in it.
I had heard that baking greensand and then submerging it in boiling water breaks it down into a slurry that can be sifted. Taking over the kitchen for 2 days, I went about this and got some pretty good results!

Be careful. One drop of blood in the pan would have sent the rest of the teeth into a feeding frenzy.

I’ll tell you something weird . For cuticle rips , small cuts and scratches , give them a disgusting saliva licking . Seriously . The antibiotic content of saliva hastens healing , and in the case of damaged cuticle pain , you wake in the morning and can fasten your buttons because your finger no longer hurts . True ,Try it .I once shared a house with a few others, one of whom repaired and maintained cars . My baking bowls and pots continually went missing until I searched around outside and found them full of sump oil . I hope you cleaned the kitchen and kitchen things nicely.😊

I really enjoy your videos, thanks for letting us tag along on your excursion. So you are allowed to hammer out fossils from rocksides? And that is for all locations in New Zealand? In Sweden we don't have that many areas with fossils. On the island of Gotland, you can find fossils from the Silurian era. You are not allowed to remove fossils, not even loose rocks on the beach. You can though get permission to search and remove fossils if you can come to an agreement with a mining company, that already have the permission to dig and extract lime stone.

A lot of those bits of coral look more like echinoderm spines. For more recalcitrant sediment you can try hydrogen peroxide. I used to buy it at about 30% from cleaning product suppliers and dilute it to 5-10%. Its become a little bit difficult now because the security services monitor purchases of it because it can potentially be used to manufacture explosives. The other way is to make a concentrated solution of sodium carbonate, which you can buy in bulk from pool chemical suppliers. Soak the rock in it then dry it out. The recrystallising sodium carbonate breaks the rock up.

@alexandermelchers1497
@alexandermelchers1497 3 жыл бұрын
For what it's worth, I also thought they might be stingray barbs. They are very similar to ones I've found in other contexts, modern sawfish don't have barbs on their rostral teeth, and Onchopristis sp. teeth are very different from these fossils. However, as I wasn't able to find any images of Ikamauias teeth when Googling them just now, I have no idea on how those would match up...

Is that kind of treatment of the layer only for that type of material or would it work for other sandstone types?

@MamlamboFossils 3 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure whether it will work with sandstone, worth a try though!

It's quite an old brand, it was brought by Leica I think. It has 3 magnification settings 6.5, 16 and 40x magnification. The brand is Wild Heerbrugg and it's a stereo microscope. Sometimes called a dissecting microscope.

Thats so awesome!! Would you consider selling bags of that stuff for us to do that with?? It'd be great to support your channel! Examples: PaleoChris does fossil gravel bags... DanHurd does paydirt baggies :)

Great idea! I don't sell any of my fossils though as I'm more of a caretaker than an owner of them 😁 also, you cannot export fossils out of New Zealand without a permit.

I new instantly that one tooth was of some kind of cow shark t found multiple cow shark teeth partially broken up from gastroliths I know this because in the same chunk there was six gastroliths, as I said 4 subadult cow shark teeth, a couple dozen very broken up bone or cartilage fragments With the main parts of the thing that ate it being a elasmosaur dorsal vertebrae, a rib or gastralia and a elasmosaur vertebrae fragment.
