Video #467: I'm Love'n my brand new Kitchenaid Counter Top Convection Oven.... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* Upgrade from an old Black and Decker Toaster Oven to a new Kitchenaid Counter top Convection Oven.
* Christmas Gift from my Mom and Dad.
* Old oven was small and needed tiles on top and inside to help stabilize the temperature to keep it from spiking.
* Convection ovens contain a fan that moves the warm air around, keeping the temperature more even.
* What I love about the Kitchenaid Counter Top Convection Oven + Some General Notes:
-- It's pretty with its Stainless Steel and Glass finish.
-- It's large on the inside (12" x 12" rack with more than 5" clearance) for baking more beads or larger pieces.
-- Comes with an enameled steel baking pan. I lined mine with 4 layers of file folders to insulate bottom.
-- Convection keeps the temperature very even... no spiking.
-- Large clearance from elements and convection heat seems to eliminate the need to tent your polymer clay while baking.
-- Additional Video Resource on Tenting... www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?...
-- Be sure to still use an oven thermometer to cross reference your oven temperature dial for accuracy. Adjust dial until the temp in oven is the proper temp for your brand of polymer clay. Premo bakes at 275F.
-- Use only the Bake Setting when baking polymer clay.
-- This model has a built in 60 minute timer that automatically shuts off the oven when done.
-- 10 minutes preheat.
-- Please note that because of the fan in convection ovens, if you're planning on Baking Your Polymer Clay on Cornstarch or Baking Soda, you will need to put it in a closed roasting pan or something, otherwise the fan will blow the powder all around your oven.

Hi Cindy. Your talk on convection ovens came at just the right time as I've just bought a tabletop oven as I'm just starting out and hadn't realised it was a convection one. I was panicing in case it was useless,so thanks for putting my mind at rest. I love your tutorials when I find them. Cheers Janice

Thank you Michelle Cochran for your kind comments! I am glad to hear that the videos are helpful for you! Watch this video, it should help with the temp spiking: Baking Polymer Clay in Toaster Oven Without Burning As far as the thermometers not reading the dame, that is odd... just pick two that are the closest and use them. That should be good enough. A degree or two off won't matter, but ten or more degrees of will.

I have a new convection toaster oven too, and found out about the force of the fan not, thank goodness, from baking powder blowing all over but rather by small pieces of my polymer work getting blown right off my tile! Using the baking tray with card-stock is probably going to prevent that in the future. It is not fun to find your pieces on the bottom resting on the heating elements!! Thanks again Cindy for your videos.

I know I am really late to the party.. But I'm new to polymer clay and have found PCT videos so very helpful. I wanted to post my experience with the NuWave oven. I didn't love using my stove because of the smell, and I didn't really want to spend extra money on convection or toaster oven. I remembered that I had my grandmother's NuWave. I looked all over and couldn't find any info on anyone using it with clay. & I mean I couldn't find any info anywhere! Well let me tell you- it works beautifully!! I do put parchment paper over the top of the pan so that smaller pieces don't fly around, and to prevent any burning. The top rack fits over top to keep the paper from flying up, I set the timer and walk away. I have it in the garage so I don't even have to smell it! I'm not saying to go out and buy one, but if you're like me, you may have one in storage, or see one at a yard sale- go for it, they do work.

It's a beautiful oven & it's great to hear that it doesn't spike. It must be a dream. Not long ago I purchased a very similar oven for the same purpose. But even with the fan running I have not been able to get it to sit at a steady temperature. I currently have 4 good quality & 2 cheap oven thermometers & I'm yet to get any 2 to read the same temperature. Do you have any thoughts on the matter? Also thank you for such a stupendous site I have learnt so much from your videos. Unfortunately due to accident many years ago it is difficult for me to suck in & understand info from reading. But your informative, no fuss, straight to the point videos have allowed me to learn & continue doing something I love. Thank You.

Hi Cindy, I use a convection oven and never tented my clay. I had no problem doing it this way. I only started tenting because you kept saying to do so, but I think I'll stop doing it because I really didn't need to do it in the first place. Congratulations on your new oven. You will love it.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Susan Higgins! If you find you don't need to tent, then don't worry about it. If you ever find that you do get scorching or if you have a taller piece, then you may need to tent, but if your oven is baking evenly without it, you don't have to.

I use a convection oven as well. It's great and holds the temperature steady throughout the 60 min. cycle. The only issue I'm having is the card stock under the clay seems to ripple so when my clay is cured and I turn the pieces over, the clay itself has ripple marks. Any advice to correct this? Thanks.

Hi Cindy. I have watched your videos regularly and have a question I haven't found an answer to. I have a convection oven now that I've been using for a year. I used your tile techniques (inside and out ) from your conventional toaster oven tutorial as well. I've been putting my items in a roasting pan closed setup with one tile on bottom. So I am insulated! Sometimes I put items in cornstarch for support when not flat items. But I just got a digital thermometer and was testing it as I was having problems... inside the tented area was about 1/2 the temperature as outside the pans. When my reg. oven thermometer says 275, the inner was barely up to 78! I keep testing. Last night I put both in the tented area and the temperatures were closer. Question... am I insulating too much? which thermometer should I believe? To get the inside temperature of closed pans to 275, it takes about 2 hours of preheating and the clay smells like it's burning. Very confused.

Now about ovens and baking, I have been reading polymer clay websites for different ideas and theories to try on my projects. One I came across I found very interesting; several people have been using crock pots and Nesco Roasters for baking their clay. Have you heard or tried this? If so is there any real benefit to this method?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 жыл бұрын
Hi msTiffieD As long as the oven will hold a steady consistent temp (the correct one for the brand), then it doesn't really matter what style of oven you use. It is important that you use an oven thermometer and that the temp doesn't spike or drop too much though. I am not sure a crock pot would be able to set the temp perfectly but a roaster might. If you have one already, then you may want to test it.

Hi i have a question ;) You mentioned you like to bake your clay items for a full 60 mins? May i ask how do you do the full 60 mins without burning or cracking the piece? I usually only put my items in for up to 20 mins because im always afraid my items will burn or crack like they have in the past :( I use mostly sculpey 3 and i make mini clay food charm etc. Also can i use cardstock in the bottom of my glass pan in a regular oven? Is it better to use glass of a metal pan? Thank you so much for your time and videos!

Isabella G. also, I would switch from SculpeyIII to Premo clay. It is a much higher quality of clay and you will have less issues with it cracking, scotching and breaking.

Great video with lots of info ! I’m using a toaster oven and I wanted to know if you noticed the toaster oven cooked the pieces faster .. my clay package recommends 30 mins at 275 but I’m having to take mine out within 15 mins because it starts to smoke .. I don’t have a thermometer yet but will get one soon. How will I know if my pieces are undercooked? Is it normal that the pieces are finished in less than the time recommended?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your toaster oven is too hot. I recommend you get an oven thermometer asap. Your oven is lying to you and is hotter than what the dial says. Baking for a short amount of time at too hot a temp means that you will burn the outside and leave the inside uncured. You will need to turn down the temp enough that you can bake it for the full hour that it doesn't burn... but is hot enough to fully "melt" or cure the particles all the way through the piece. I also recommend you watch the other baking videos I have, they will greatly help with the quality of your pieces. Properly baked pieces are stronger and more durable... something that you want when you have spent time and money on your pieces. :)

Hey Cindy, I know this video is very old, but I'm just starting out with polymer clay, and I was wondering first do you still use the oven in this video and do you have to use the tricks that you did with the other toaster oven with the tiles on the top and inside the oven??, I was going to buy one of these kitchen aid convection ovens and wanted to use it correctly...I will definitely use the oven thermometer but I don't want the spikes in temp you spoke of to ruin my clay experience...thanks in advance...your tutorials are like a treasure chest full of Gold....Thanks

I still use this oven and love it! I actually don't use any tiles to regulate the temp in this one, but you can if you wanted to, it wouldn't hurt anything. Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it! 💖

Thank you, I’m looking to purchase a oven and this is good information. One question, do you bring the temp up or do you start the bake in a cold oven ?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
You can do it either way, just make sure that you're baking long enough to get the strength you need. Do a little test strip of scrap clay and bake it and try and break it. If it is strong, then you've cured your piece properly.

LOVE the video! I haven't been able to find any clay artists who explain in detail about their ovens like this. Quick question, what are your thoughts on Fimo Soft clay? Is Premo better?
@PolymerClayTutor

Thanks AnnaHans88 Fimo Soft is a good brand. I like Premo better though because of the strength, the texture and the colors are good for color mixing. Here is a video on some of the brands if you're interested: Buying Polymer Clay

Hi ,thanks for your videos, they are very helpful. Question: do you still bake for one hour even with the convection oven? If I enable convection in my oven, at parity temperature an time, my clay becomes burnt vs. baking without convection. Thanks for your help!!
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you need a separate oven thermometer. It seems that it is baking hotter than the dial says. Convection blows the air around and is more even. That is why I like using it. But if it burns when it is in convection, it means it is too hot everywhere in the oven now, where before it might just have some hot spots and cool spots. It is not the fault of the convection, but rather the fault of the dial not being correctly calibrated with the actual temp inside the oven. Buy a thermometer and go by the temp on the thermometer and not the dial and you should be good to go.
@paolorossi33

@@PolymerClayTutor thanks for the answer....I am already using an oven thermometer and the temperature is correct. Could it be that also the oven thermometer is wrong?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 жыл бұрын
@@paolorossi33 Yeah that's possible. You could get a new thermometer and put it in beside the other one and see. I would take some scrap clay and do some testing. Turn down the dial just a touch and see if you sample strip bakes without burning but is still strong. Usually a little playing around and you'll find the sweet spot. Then use a sharpie to mark on your dial where that perfect spot is and use that. Good luck!

Hi sunaina dixit If you can completely shut off your microwave and only use the convection oven, it should be fine. Never use a microwave though or your clay will catch on fire!!

Hi does this leave a smell in the oven? Would you be able to cook food In there afterwards or should I stick to a normal oven?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Caroline Turnbull I find if you tent your pieces, baking doesn't leave much of a smell at all in your oven. If you were worried about it you could wipe out your oven first before baking food in it. It has been certified non toxic and for use in your regular oven. I like to bake in a separate oven in my studio, so the smell is not an issue, but that is up to you.

Silicone = Yes, mostly. Test first. Resin = no, it will yellow in heat. Use resin on clay after your are done all the baking.
