On this video, we put the Baking Soda Method to the test, and find the optimal Power, Speed, and Baking Soda/Water Ratio that will produce the best quality photo engraving!

Our Test Points:
Speed: 100mm/s to 300mm/s
Power: 10% to 24% on 50W Laser
Blank 1: 0 cups Water, 0 tbsp Baking Soda
Blank 2: 1.75 cups Water, 0 tbsp Baking Soda
Blank 3: 1.75 cups Water, 1/3 tbsp Baking Soda
Blank 4: 1.75 cups Water, 1 tbsp Baking Soda
Blank 5: 1.75 cups Water, 2 tbsp Baking Soda
Blank 6: 1.75 cups Water, 3 tbsp Baking Soda
Blank 7: 1.75 cups Water, 4 tbsp Baking Soda

i tend to use BORAX as it makes the marking darker....

Did you let the mixture dry on your board before engraving? Or did you engrave it while the board was wet? The contrast is remarkable!!!

Let it dry as long as possible :) I dried mine 24hrs.

ok.. but.. couldn't you have gotten the same image result on normal wood by using 200 speed and 20% power? could you test that? would love to se if that makes a difference or not.

I did that test as well. Engraving is way too deep, lots of charring, and the finish is not smooth at all, since power is too high. You might be able to see the result at 20% and 200mms if you pause when I show the "control" piece.

I would have thought you would make your test templates using the same dither method that you would use in photos instead of using solids. Wouldn't that give you a more direct answer? I personally use a Floyd-Steinberg dither from photoshop for my photo processing.

Hey John, thanks for the comment :) I thought about that in the beginning and thats what I was going to do initially (to dither each circle). But I realized that my main purpose was to see how the colours would turn out, so I ended up just simplifying the test by filling it. You could definitely do the test using dithered circles though! I could see some potential benifits in that, since the final results might get affected based on speed and power as well! Let me know how it goes if you end up trying it out :)
