Bakubung Bush Lodge is a four-star lodge located on the Pilanesberg National Park in Sun City, North West Province, South Africa. This national park is a game reserve that is home to animals such as giraffes, zebras, elephants, rhinos, lions and cheetahs. There are viewpoints with picnic spots, bird watching huts, and even a restaurant with a curio shop to enjoy in the park! This park is wonderful if you want the African safari experience without feeling like a tourist.
You can see wild animals up close in their natural habitat by going on a game drive, either by signing up for a guided tour offered by the park and surrounding lodges, or by exploring on your own. Park entrance goes for R80 per adult from South Africa, R110 per adult of foreign nationality, and R40 per car, so it cost us R200 ($13,85) to have access to the park for the duration of our stay. This was the highlight of the trip because of the variety of wildlife we saw and we ended up going to the park every day!
We definitely enjoyed the time we spent at Bakubung from 21-25 June 2021. This impromptu trip fell right before exam season for us, so my partner and I both ended up spending the mornings working on classwork, but we still made the most out of our time there. We ended up going on this trip because my partner's parents decided last minute that they were not up for the six-hour drive to the lodge and offered for us to go instead. We love road trips and started packing right away!
We stayed in one of the self-catering chalets that go for roughly R4000 ($277) a night, but we were lucky enough to be able to go without paying this rate because my partner's parents own a time-share at Bakubung Bush Lodge. I am very thankful for this opportunity because otherwise, a trip like this would definitely have been unattainable on a student budget. We did pay for travel, food, and miscellaneous things ourselves, so this trip cost us a total of R3000 ($207). If we had to pay for the chalet as well, a four-night stay would have ended up being R19 000 ($1316).
